    Hello !

It seem that i have a " problem " with my brand new G74 HDD.

The HardDrive ( seems to ) make like a BIP for half a second , then nothing. Nothing happens on the screen , the computer doesn't BSOD or anything. Just like if nothing happened , but the noise is a bit scary. My laptop didn't move since i unboxed it on my desk , and it happens once yesterday , and once today ( maybe other times , but with my headset i probably won't ear it )

Anybody ever experienced such strange noises from the laptop ?

    Thanks

I haven't heard of anything. What HDD is it, specs of your PC, etc.?

    G74SX ( GTX 560 , 8 Go Ram with 1 To hdd , BluRay , FullHd disp ) from what i read over the internet , it's 2 momentus XT 500 GB.

The noise is a bit scary , just like if you were shaking a hard-drive while reading before it dies , some kind of BEEP or SHQUIZ very short and loud , something like that.

Run Seagate's firmware upgrade program for the Momentus XT. I believe the current version is 25, and my drive (that I bought retail last year) shipped with maybe 21 on it.

The firmware program is pretty great-easier than Intel's for their drives. You launch it in Windows, it tells you the existing firmware and the new version, you click to install it, it reboots, takes a minute to flash it, and comes back up. (Although I'm not sure what happens with TWO drives in there...)

At least I assume the models shipped with this would use the same firmware? The download page lists what works with it I think.

Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried, as what you're describing sounds like maybe the drive is spinning down, which mine did too with the firmware it shipped with. After upgrading (I think initially to 24 or something) I haven't had a single issue with it, and really, really like the Momentus XT. WAY faster than the older drive it replaced, and in fact it doesn't really feel much slower than the SSD I put as the boot drive in my new G74. (Much of the time if feels identical, although I guess it saves OpenOffice files slower, but that's not a huge deal.)

Woua , thank you for that great answer. I'll be searching for that firmware updater , never thought that a hard drive could have a firmware if not an SSD. Thanks !

I know this noise. it irritates me so much. Services can't find anything bad about HDD, all seems fine. However, for customer satisfaction, they may change it as they did for me.
