Okay so my notebook the G74SX came with a built in adapter the Atheros AR9002WB-1NG which is supposed to be B/G/N capable. But, after getting a new N router, my adapter doesn't detect the N network. Any suggestions?

I know the N network is broadcasting because I plugged in a second usb adapter I used for my old laptop and it detects the N network.

Are you broadcasting the N network on 5GHz or 2.4GHz, are your drivers up to date, have you checked the Atheros adapter settings?

Yes, both 5 and 2.4 (dual band router) and yes they're up to date.

I'm guessing the Atheros doesn't pick up both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks, the Atheros can't do 5GHz. Sinc eyou have a dual band router, i'd get a new wireless adapter to take advantage of your 5GHz network, that band is virtually unused.

Also, what router did you get, i've had atheros adapters not play nice with cisco gear in the past. You should try at a friend's place and see if you can connect to their N network too if at all possible.

Then Asus and Newegg falsely advertised. The Atheros was listed as N capable for both bands. What more it's not detecting the 2.4 ghz N band either, it's only detecting the router when it's in B/G mode.

It should detect the 2.4GHz network in N mode at the very least. Does the 9002 have bluetooth as well, if it does, try disabling the bluetooth function of the adapter.

On newegg, i only saw B/G/N which is the right designation, dual band adapters are labeled A/B/G/N or A/G/N.

My bluetooth is always disabled unless I'm connecting to my phone. I've seen both Dual Band and Single Band adapters only labeled B/G/N both on Newegg and Tigerdirect. I bought my laptop on Tigerdirect which listed (at the time) that the Atheros was N capable and did both 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz. Which is one of the reasons why I chose the Asus. I'm not too happy about this. And now for some reason my usb adapter which I know is 5 ghz capable isn't allowing me to connect to the N network and isn't keeping the WPA2 key stored. Blargh....

If you find it too much trouble to get the Atheros adapter to work, you could get an Intel 6200 and just replace it. That's what i did, my AR9285 wasn't really causing me problems, but the 6200 gave me nice performance boot for ~20$.

If you're ever interested in doing it, here's the procedure: http://forum.notebookreview.com/8320975-post793.html. Since you don't have a separate bluetooth module, you may want to get an Intel 6230 instead of the Intel 6200 since it has bluetooth as well. You could also check to see fi your antennas are properly connected to your Atheros adapter.

Thanks, I'll look into it once I have the money. For now I'm working with a USB Linksys adapter in my usb 3.0 slot for 300 mbps connection. Surprisingly fast actually.

Oh yeah, they are, but you can use it in a USB2.0, you still won't be saturating the USB port. While the speed is listed as 300mbps in windows, you likely won't go over 150mbps of actual transfer speed.
