You can skip the Comic Sans MS part to get to my question, I am just venting now.

I recently bought a G74SX for development at Best Buy. I usually have the "Geek Squad" initialize it and clean off some of the bloat (please don't judge me, I have my reasons) and, in this case, add the free virus software (I chose Kaspersky). This time I also got the restore discs.

Yesterday it was time to do a system restore due to some software that needed to go and the uninstall wouldn't be sufficient. Using the Best Buy "restore discs", I restored the sytem but imagine my surprise when the ASUS hardware drivers weren't included. No LAN, no USB etc. I marched into Best Buy wanting an answer and made my observation that I expected system restore discs to restore my system to what I walked out of the store with or at least to what the store received it as (a functioning system). The geek went on to tell me that not all manufacturers included the hardware drivers on the restore (I almost reached the point of dumbfounded). He said I would have to download the drivers and I said that I need to connect to the internet for that (I didn't need to mention that there were 4 other computers within arms reach at my office). So he downloaded the ENet device driver for me to at least be able to connect (He wanted to charge me but I guess I convinced him that he shouldn't).

So now I have spent hours on the ASUS web site, downloading zip files, unzipping, installing, restarting all the while keeping my fingers crossed.

    Done venting but still restoring.

For those of you that have a G74SX, did it come with a factory image? If so, how was it delivered? A disc partition, DVDs? If a factory image is provided, maybe I will buy another system, copy the image and return it.

    Just a thought.

    TIA

You should have your F9 Recovery partition on your HDD unless you removed it. Hit F9 at POST to get it started.

Don't do the factory image. Just do a clean install. It's better that way. And install the latest drivers for your hardware.

While you are at it, you can repartition your drives the way you want them or get rid of the partitions.

    Thanks for the replies.

There is no factory image partition. Don't know if they deleted it or what.

Anyway I have downloaded every driver and utility Asus lists for the G74 (aware of version of course) and have managed to get everything working except the USB3 port...but that's in another thread

Once you get your USB3 working, make an image of it :D Now you'll have your own working, awesome image for the future.

I would try the updated Fresco USB3 driver.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Lot of good stuff at the asusrog site. I did try to download the G74 driver/utilities disk. Initially it said it there was about 25 hours left to download. It lost connection after running 27 hours and still said there was 15 hours left.

I am back up and running, borrowed a Best Buy G74 and imaged the disk, put my Windows code in and after doing some setup on mine, I imaged that disk also.

So all is right with the world, for the moment.

    Thanks again.
