So, naturally when I got my laptop from Best Buy the first thing I did was was wipe both hard drives and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I got all the drivers I needed from the ASUS website and everything else works fine. But for some reason the USB3.0 doesn't work right. What happens is that everytime I play or transfer a file through my Seagate 2 TB USB3.0 GoFlex drive connected through the USB3.0 port it will halt mid playback or transfer and then the drive will disconnect automatically. It works fine when I plug it into a USB2.0 port, at reduced speed as you would imagine.
I looked it up and the G74 uses a Fresco Logic FL1000 xHCI USB3.0 controller. So I tried clean-installing every driver revision I could find for it. But the problem persists through every driver I try. I tried emailing ASUS support but they told me to install the drivers from the ASUS site, which was what I did in the first place, so that was no help. I'm going out on a limb and assuming that my individual USB3.0 controller might be faulty and that I need to RMA my notebook. But if anyone can assist me in troubleshooting this problem so I don't have to send it in, it would be much appreciated.

Is the HDD self-powered? Sounds to me the drive is not getting enough power.
What version of the Fresco driver are you using now? Have you tried hanging off a powered USB hub for 3.0? -
I'm running version 3.0.119.1 of the FL1000 USB3 Controller driver, off the ASUS website. The HDD is powered by an AC Adapter that came with the drive. Could you explain, "hanging off a powered USB hub for 3.0"?
I should also add that I've this USB3 HDD since before I got my Sandy Bridge desktop got stolen a couple of months ago. That setup had a MSI mobo that had a Renesas brand USB3 Controller and my drive worked fine with that.
Also, I'm having the same problem with plugging USB2 devices into USB3, like my 4th Gen 32GB iTouch. For some reason, when it's plugged in via USB3 iTunes only sees the capacity as 4GB. -
A USB Hub that has it's own power source.
On my driver page, I have a newer Fresco package that may help.

EDIT: I found a link for 3.3.14.0 on ASUS site... buried once again....

I guess I'm going to have to send this notebook in for repairs because now I don't even see the FL1000 USB3.0 Controller or any unknown device under the Device Manager anymore. Nothing even connects when I plug it into the USB3 port. I can't even install the driver you linked for me because it says I don't even have a USB 3.0 controller. Ugh...
Thanks for the help anyways, Chastity. -
Common issue with crappy Fresco chipset. I had the same issue, but no issues after clean windows install.
Here's the link to version 3.3.35 -
That's my experience with the N73JQ and USB3.0

I'm having a similar issue with my G53SW laptop. I feel like Asus cut a lot of corners (more than usual for their standards) for the newer G series. :/

When I installed version 3.0.119.1, I had similar experience with my G73SW.
So I installed version 3.0.114.13 from DVD of G73SW, it was solved.
By the way, I don't know correct installation procedure.
I don't know that it is necessary to use addpatch.bat and removepatch.bat or not.
Does anyone know correct installation procedure of ASUS fresco USB driver ? -
Update:
USB3 still isn't working. I just got myself a Tripp Lite U360-004-R powered USB3 hub a few days ago. It seemed to be the most stable from the reviews I've read on Newegg and Amazon. I'm still having the same problem. I've also already tried using a A to Micro-B USB 3.0 Y cable a few months ago. I guess I'll have to send it in.
