G74SX with 1600mhz RAM

I switched the 1333mhz ram that came with my G74 with 1600mhz RAM, but CPU-Z still shows it running at 1333mhz. Is there a way to adjust the speed manually?

My G74SX is the AH71 model with 2670qm. It came with 16Gb of RAM which I replaced with Samsung Green DDR3 4x4Gb that I got from Fry's. Is it incompatible to run at 1600mhz in G74? Should I return it and get different type of RAM? Can someone help me please?

 

G74SX would support up to 1866MHZ ram, check the manual about placing them in a ram slots.

 

The G74 can support the speed of the modules but the processor cannot.

To make full use of 1600mhz you need a processor that can run at that speed.

My 2760QM runs at 1600mhz so my hyperX is fully utilised. Your 2670QM does not:

But my M17x which has the same type of CPU as my G74 seems to be running at 1600mhz. CPU-Z shows it running at 797.5.

 

Exactly the same CPU?

 

As long as you use PnP RAM (Corsair, HyperX), whatever SB CPU will take the extra bandwith (1600, 1866) even the 2630/2670qm !

 

People talk much about HyperX memory , do you know those model ?

They are WAY cheaper than the HyperX , do someone here already tried them ? The description says it's optimised for 2nd Gen Core i5 / i7 , and will auto adjust the speed without any need of bios change ( So , it's plug and play )

 

THey will work straight away with any SB I7 CPU at the right frequency -1600 in your case

 

Great, found them for even cheaper on my local retailer , 44€ for 8Gig of this model , i think i'll give it a shot next month to see if i can get a real boost from stock one.

 

Don't want to self-promote but my thread shows many advantages of Corsair Vengeance.
I bought this RAM recently and soon will receive it. But I already know all I need to choose it over some overpriced metal heat-spreaded HyperX.
Even stock clocks of Corsair are better than HyperX' one.

 

According to CPU-Z it looks exactly the same.


I didn't know about PnP RAM. That Corsair RAM looks like the best choice.

Actually performance can decrease because of allocating too much of memory. I read somewhere that WEI of CPU decreased after switching to 16Gb and technicians told why.

 

Are thoses corsair equal or better than 1866 HyperX , while being 1600 ?

I'm still wondering if it will give me a real boost or not from stock ram ( 9-9-9-24 )

 

I went from my stock ram (4x2GB 1333 9-9-9-24 CR2, WEI 7.6) to the 8GB HyperX 1600 (o/c slighthly, WEI 7.9) and I can tell you I noticed a slight difference in games and windows but I would get them only if they are cheap

 

44€ is kinda cheap , but i can also buy a new KIller N for the same price ( that will allow me to play BF3 without huge lags on the go cause the actual card makes my framerate drop to 30 every 10 sec -_- )

Also , i'm searching for a PSU more powerfull than 150W , so that's 3 pieces of hardware i'd like to change ^^ ( SSD are still way too expensive atm )

 

Sorry, can't say. No one before tested them on the CPU which supports 1866Mhz when they are OCed. If you want 100% stable RAM then HyperX 1866 seems cheaper than Corsair 1866.

But I suggest you buy Corsair Vengeance 1600. Because it is the best for its money. And even if overclocking will not be very successful still difference between 1866 and 1600 is not very good looking.

 

Before reading this topic i didn't even know it was possible to OC rams. Can i try on the stock one or does it only work on high ends ?

yes , HyperX 1866 are cheaper than Corsair 1866 , but more than 100 / 8Gb where Corsair 1600 is 44€ , i'm sure that the difference is not worth the price. What i'm wondering is that if 44€ for 8Gb 1600 corsair is worth compared to stock one ...

 

I tried OC stock RAM. But I tried to do it on old DDR 333Mhz one . Which is still expensive though. The problem is that you can't do much on stock RAM. There are other circumstances too.
I have been told that if I spoil 1 stick of RAM by too tightened latency I will be able to easily recover it using another stick. Just try to boot with working one and then after POST put 2-nd one stick. Then reflash it. My nc6000 laptop may be too old to this because I recovered 1 stick with help of Madam Luck. I rebooted numerous of times with both sticks hoping that I will be able to see desktop and launch flashing program (and flash stick) before System crash. Laptop didn't boot when I put 2nd stick at the moment of booting after POST.

But it was my old lappy. I believe new laptops give you much better chance to recover sticks. Because many people told me that it is common thing.

 

I'd stick to buying new one instead of OC xD
