Last night I went to Bestbuy to check out the G74 and I fell in love with the demo unit so I decided to buy it then and there. As I was unboxing my G74 from Bestbuy, I noticed that my unit had a different touchpad then that of the demo unit. My touchpad was a glossy one while the Bestbuy demo unit was a flat black. Didn't mind it at first but after powering it on I realized how much I hated this glossy touchpad. I decided to see if there was a plastic covering but there was nothing after careful inspection. Then I realized that the screen quality was inferior to the demo unit.

So today I decided to return the laptop back to Bestbuy in hopes of getting a replacement. They didn't have any stock so I just returned it. While the geek squad was checking out the laptop, I told him to compare it to the demo unit. Eventually he agreed that it was significantly different in screen quality and touchpad. He had no explanation for it. Anyone else think Bestbuy might have a different version depending on batch?

Well that would be the first I have heard of that.

I picked mine up back in the beginning of July and it doesn't have a glossy touchpad. When you say the screen was inferior...what exactly do you mean? I don't think the one in my G74SX-BBK7 is all that great (lousy viewing angles, washed out colors at times). I'm jaded though as I sit here typing this on a LG IPS LCD which is absolutley gorgeous.

I have heard the 1920x1080 screen is much better than the 1600x900 but I have yet to see one to actually say if it is so.

Not surprising. During manufacture, components will change due to availability. Remember the LG vs AUO fiasco? :) Some are inferior to others. Glad you returned it. If you decide to try again, make sure you inspect it before purchasing.

The funny thing about the touchpad is that it is in fact a protective covering.

For the first week I had my A1, I was like, huh this is neat... sure looks like a protective covering though but I couldn't get it off for the life of me and just wrote it off as a feature.

Week later, I go to dust off my computer with a can of air. I was dusting off the tiny crevices surrounding the touchpad and then POOF. The thing flew off, which at that point I said, I KNEW IT, IT WAS A PROTECTIVE COVER!

Sad thing is, I put the cover back on, it's a pretty thick piece of plastic and has a light adhesive under it.

I can vouch for that as well. The plastic cover was somewhat difficult to pull out and I could see how one could think the track pad was glossy. I had to use a sharp tool in order to get one of the corners out, after that it was cake.
