Right, so I purchased a G74SX-TH71 which has the i7-2670qm in it and the nVidia 560m. There is a built in webcam in it, but the Windows 7 that came with the computer isn't recognizing the camera or installing it. Asus doesn't give a manufacturer on their site or in any of the reference information for this computer for the webcam, so I don't know what to look for driver wise (all they say is it's an HD 2.0 Megapixel webcam...). There are no drivers on the driver disk supplied for the computer either. I do have an unknown device in the device manager and I've uninstalled it and restarted hoping that Win7 would recognize and install the driver but it doesn't do so. Also doing the "Update device driver" method doesn't work.

Unknown device identifier doesn't recognize it either.

    Any suggestions?

Update: after installing driver detective, if showed that I had the USB 2.0 UVC 1m webcam installed, but that it was "unplugged". Which means maybe it's disconnected somewhere in the computer?

You could look for the hardware id and google that. You might get n actual brand for your camera. Here's mine: USB\VID_04F2&PID_B106&REV_8915&MI_00 Sonix 260, VID is the manufacturer identifier and PID is the actual model identifier IIRC.

The only thing is I don't know how to get the product ID and if it's "unplugged" even though it's built into the monitor I can't exactly take it out of the screen and look at it.

Open the device manager, right click on the webcam, properties, details and select hardware ids, even an unknown device should show one.

The webcam in G53 series also sucks due to low fps and limited accessibilty to deep settings. They somehow seem to have avoided a fine webcam by letting user pay 5 bucks more!

If you give me your serial number, I can look up what webcam was installed. As for being unplugged, you can have that checked at a local ASP or RMA it.

I don't even know where to look for the serial number. Windows says it's an unknown usb device and gives no PID or listed numbers for it. Gives me a code 43.

Your serial number is on the ASUS sticker underneath your laptop.

    Case: 1582379

Thought you meant the serial number for the camera.

Okay, so after wriggling things about I got the computer to recognize the webcam after uninstalling the "unknown device" and restarting. The only problem is that after hibernating the computer and then waking it up the computer says that the device is not recognized and the driver software failed to install. It works (sort of, I get a half picture with it) before hibernation, then it dies after hibernation....

If you have that PID in Device Manager now, I can prolly find the drivers.

According to my records here, you have an Azurewave AM-1H031, but unfortunately that's not the PID.

Just wanted to add that I got my G74SX here, and the ID comes up as:

    VID_1BCF / PID_2885

and is using usbvideo.inf from Microsoft. Based on the version numbers, and our driver database, the numbers best match the Bison Camera driver series.

You're welcome to hit here and try them:

Unfortunately as soon as windows stop recognizing it I couldn't get the PID, it gives it as VID_001 PID_0000. But I'll try to see if the drivers work.

Problem fixed. The webcam had incompatibility issues with the video card drivers. Of course it still doesn't behave with Skype in any way shape or form.
