hey guys i'm new to these forums and i finally recieved my g74 yesterday and i'm trying to get it set up before i go back offshore for work early next week. the reason why i'm wrinting this is because i tried a couple of blu rays in the disc drive and they come up beautifully on the screen but will not allow me to play them. only thing that comes up is the menu screen showing bits of the movie with play,setup,etc.etc.it's playing through the cineplayer from roxio that came with the computer. i registered the drive thinking that would do something but didn' do anything at all.it says blu ray on the side of the cd drive door. i really don't understand. i even checked to see if the hardware was up to date and everything checks out.please help a fellow asus noob out. thanks in advance.

i'm really new to this. all i've ever had was good to go from the start hp computers. i've never had to download drivers to get something to work. i did download a dvd suite driver but t's still not working. when the dvd screen comes on eveything looks fine but it won't let me hit the play button and it work.don't know what to do here. guess i'll call asus.
update: sat on the phone for 38 minutes with nobody ever answering. what kind of crap is this? i spend 1700 on a laptop and the blu ray won't play blu ray discs. this is bull!!!! help anybody! -
Sorry to hear of your Blu-Ray issue, 440hsp. I recommend the following:
Use Windows System Restore to restore your system back to an earlier time (i.e. before you changed the driver on your BD Drive). If this fails to resolve your issue:
1) Launch Device Manager and go to DVD/CD-ROM drives
2) Expand it and right-click on your BD drive and choose "Properties" from the popup menu.
3) Select the "DVD Region" tab. My tab says "Region 1" in Current Region and I'm able to play DVD's. Unfortunately, I don't have a Blu-Ray disc to check. Region 1 corresponds to North America. If you are attempting to play Region 1 DVD's/BD's and still experience this issue, then
1) Launch Device Manager and go to DVD/CD-ROM drives.
2) Expand it and right-click on your BD drive and choose "Uninstall" from the popup menu.
3) Reboot your system.
Windows 7 should detect your BD drive and install the proper Plug and Play driver for it. My "Slimtype BD E DS4E1S" drive on my G74SX-A1 has Microsoft version 6.1.7601.17514 in the Driver tab.
4) Launch Roxio CinePlayer and attempt to play a DVD/BD. Choose the correct format (i.e. 2D). Your arrow and enter keys should allow you to access the menus as well as your touchpad. Be sure to try both.
Let me know how it goes.... -
Hi guys
Im really troubled, and I come here asking for your help!
Ive bought this Asus, especifically 91171v which is a 3D model. Everything has run smoothly, up to the moment when I tried to do what I bought this PC for, Gaming!
My optical drive doesnt read games. More accurate, it doesnt read any executable disc, it just enters like in a repetitive cycle (judged by the sound it emites) and never finishes charging the content of the DVD. Music CD's run perfectly, Flims DVD are perfect too? however BluRay movies havent been able to be played but I think thats caused by the Roxio software, not sure thats the otical drive problem. So Please!! do you have any idea what should do? i got the PC today so the problem has actually presented since the start, couldnt tell if a specific installation (music sotware, internet browser) changed its working capacities.
