    Hi everyone,

I'm considering updating my laptop from an Old HP HDX16 to this one listed here. I understand depending upon the retailer there can be some significant differences to machines. I'm looking at this one and realize the HDD is a 5400rpm but I plan to put a 256GB SSD on the primary slot and reload windows to that, along with run my games from there and just store stuff on the regular HDD. Can you tell me what you think? would this be a good buy... I tried searching the forums for the model but couldn't find it anywhere.

If you compare spec for spec that price is really nice!
You may have to get a HD caddy to use the 2nd HD. But the upside if you buy from gentech they will thoroughly test the machine B4 shipping if you request, and U get mouse, backpack and the ability to upgrade to non glossy screen (I wish I have that option when I got mine)
BTW both have the 192 bit Video card - nice.

Where would I buy the HDD caddy from if it's not already in the Laptop?

Wow, wish I had waited to pick up the XR1. Much better deal.

As far as I can tell the only differences between the XR1 and A1 is a much smaller and inferior HD, no backpack, and no mouse. Definitely worth the $350-400 savings.

^^^ Agreed Captain, also the A1 plays Blu-Rays, but you can easily swap the drive in the XR1 if you need this feature (approx $100 U.S.)
ASUS eStore will most likey have the caddy (IF you even need it) I would wait for an owner of this model to post (xr1) before you order one. They are < 30 for similar models

I purchased one today, what would you like to know about it. It does indeed have the HDD caddy, how can I tell if the DVD drive is capable of being removed without voiding the warranty?

One screw is holding the dvd drive in place. It's at the corner where the RAM and HDD meet.

Still waiting for my XR1 to ship from Asus. They've changed the ship date twice and now it's supposedly shipping Aug. 10th. Good to know that they have the caddy included. I got mine from here: G74SX - INTEL - CORE I7 - 2630QM - 2 GHZ - DDR3 SDRAM - RAM: 12 GB - SERIAL ATA - G74SX-XR1. Is just a bit more money than that furniture place but still a great deal compared to the A1 model. Already got one 500GB Momentus XT ready to go and a 4GB RAM module on stand-by. Can't wait to get this rig in my hands!
