    Hey All,

I am trying to find a good laptop for my brother and I am really liking the G75's, but I am unsure if they pack enough power. I have spent a lot of time on youtube surfing through video's to see what kind of fps people are getting, but I am not satisfied with what I am seeing. People will post a video of BF3 on ultra getting 24fps when i am more interested on what it would get on medium-high settings!!.

Anyways my main questions are how do they handle the GW2 beta so far? What kind of FPS are people getting? Would my brother notice a large difference coming from the desktop with an older HD5670 gpu?

I think I am more interested on the model with the 670m, but if people believe the 660m to be a better buy i am open to suggestions.

    Thanks

You can OC the 660M (with a modded vBIOS) to be faster than an OC'd 670M (570M)

I would buy a sager instead though, it's better (and cheaper) than the G75

Only the top of the range cards can really max out BF3 and achieve a constant 30fps even on my 6990M I have to ditch AA to achieve a fluid 40fps+ so you cannot expect too much of a 660M as it is only a mid-high end card. It will easily handle Guild Wars 2 however and you will notice a pretty big difference coming from a 5670 which only had 400 shaders and was not very powerful.

660M over 670M IMO as the 670 is old tech. The 680M in a Sager/Clevo seems to be the best option at the moment due to the 7970M's issues unless you go Alienware.

I was looking on notebook check and the 5670 is right below the 555m would it be safe to compare the 555m to the 660m and the 670m to see what sort of gains he would get? He is on a pretty tight budget and is not looking to max games like BF3 out. Playing the GW2 beta he is only getting around 20-25fps, but I still think it is very much cpu bound right now and he only has an x2 5200+ :(

The 660m and 670m should be able to run the game at near max settings, my G73 can run it almost maxed out to the G75 should offer performance that is a tad better.

I really want to get into this game but I dunno if I can handle it as I have really bad RSI/Tendonitis in my arms at the moment :( stupid arms. Looks a great game though and never really recovered from World Of Warcraft I still have flash backs from how good it was. Addiction.com.

I was just playing in the stress test and I was getting much better fps on my 6990m. Pretty much had everything turned up except shadows on med and no supersample and I was getting between 50-60fps. It must still be cpu bound though because lowering the resolution does nothing. They are getting there...The game looks great.

The 6990m is more powerful than the 660M by quite a margin so you will see better performance. Your CPU is also powerful enough for any game so it is most likely just optimisation that needs to be tweaked before release and a few patches.

660 should be overkill for GW2 from what Ive seen in the last two stress tests. I have a G74 and the game pretty much never dips below 35fps even in the biggest fights on maxed settings. Minus super sampling that is...

I think it might be better if you get a sager or msi though.. I love my G74 but im starting to think that asus is pretty notorious for using cheap components. This is pure speculation..but it feels like the PSU doesnt supply enough power. When I have my mouse plugged in for charging, my GPU OC becomes unstable.. but when the mouse is charged and wireless I never get any issues at the same OC. Ive owned three asus gaming laptops so far and each one has had some annoying issue due to one cheap component or another.

EDIT: On this GTX560m I get 30-45fps in BF3 with...

    1080p
    MSAA off.
    FXAA on.
    8XAF
    SSAO
    Everything else maxed.

It only goes down to 30 when tanks are plowing buildings so the gameplay is generally pretty smooth. I dont know how much of an upgrade 660m grants, or how much better that CPU is, but im guessing it will be at least 15-20% faster? So your brother can expect 40-50fps? Maybe?
