    Greetings,

    Laptop (Model): G75VW
    Processor: Intel Core i7 - 3630QM - 2.4 GHz
    Memory (part number): 16 GB
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX - 670M - 3GB
    Monitor: ASUS PA248Q
    HDD: 750GB 7200rpm
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) w/ Media Center

I bought my G75VW a little over 2 years ago. I had no problems with random shutdowns for the first 18 months, but over the last 9 months (unfortunately after the warranty period) I can't run on battery power alone without the machine shutting down. It might take 10 minutes or 40 minutes, but every time I unplug and run on battery power alone I get a shutdown. I could be doing anything at all...even just using Chrome for browsing the web and it will happen.

You can see the basic specs above, but here's a bit more info: I've installed all Windows updates and all NVidia updates. I'm also using the most current version (223) of the BIOS.
I've read some other threads across various sites and tried quite a few things:

    • Uninstalled Instant On
    • Uninstalled Power4Gear
    • Uninstalled ASUS LiveUpdate
    • Tried not using any USB ports

None of these things have worked.

I've also noticed some really high speed fans coming on and going off both when plugged in and when on battery only (but the shutdowns only happen on battery only) so I ran some monitoring using HWiNFO64 and attached the results. These temps seem high to me since I was only using word docs and Chrome during this time and not gaming at all. Thoughts on those temps?

I did some monitoring of my battery using BatteryInfoView and it looks like the wear level is down to 43%. I've attached those results as well.

So I guess my questions are:

    1. What are some thoughts on my temps?
    2. Should I repaste my CPU?
    3. Could a low battery capacity ALONE be causing these shutdowns and high temps or is that a EVIDENCE of another problem?

Battery is a consumable good, typical life cycle is 500 charges, and you have had the battery for more than 2 years therefore it's time to replace it.
High fan speed is caused by dirty heatsink/vent, use compressed air to clean those area up then the fan speed will slow down.

Thanks for your reply Kevin. I will certainly do both of those things.

But could either the high temp/high fan speeds or the old battery actually be CAUSING the shutdowns on battery power?

Yes, if the temperatures are too high then the machine will power off to save damage from excessive heat.

If the battery can't supply proper power the machine will also shut off.

    Thanks Meaker.

While I'm in there cleaning out the machine I think I'm also going to repaste. Now I've repasted a Dell Laptop before, but is there anything specific I should know about repasting this particular ASUS G75VW? Does anyone have any particular advice about that or good links to show it?

    Thanks!

You'll need some good thermal paste like Gelid GC Extreme.. Also get some 90% alcohol/ alcohol wipes to clean out the old paste.. Make sure you have a can of compressed on hand to clean out the heatsinks...

WD40 + paper towel will clean it perfectly (thermal paste melts like ice), then use alcohol to remove oil, then repaste.

    Thanks Kevin.
I'll repaste and post back with my results.

You can get to the fans with the little hatches to do cleaning but a repaste will require a full tear down. All the g75 models should be the same process.

I am almost sure that this symptom is related to the battery. I've had my actual laptop (MSI GT60 2OD) for a year and a half and suddenly I began to suffer random shutdowns with running with battery only. Check your battery wear with battery care or CPUID, when battery did the same to me I had about 85% wear level and it was because I use daily my lappy for work, letting discharge completely and then charging it (which is very harmful for battery life, so I don't do it anymore).

That can be the issue too, it's a little hard to say without some fact finding on the system :)

It's very likely to be the battery because battery life cycle is about 500 uses, especially it has been more than a year since your purchase.
However, battery warranty is 1-year so you will have to contact manufacturer directly to purchase a replacement.
