Yup, the retail / custom shops are next in line for getting correct data from the vendor, and so it all takes a few weeks to shake out.

yeah like this link:

Definitely looks better without the orange keys. I'd *almost* say it's not actually that ugly, though it still has the red keyboard backlight, and the orange on the back of the case.
A step in the right direction, certainly. Maybe in a few years, someone will make a gaming laptop that actually looks nice.hmscott likes this. -
you can put a skin over it and make it look nondescript.
or just Plastidip the whole thing
The one feature missing in these laptops.... bios switch to disable/enable gsync and optimus.
could solve the poor battery life right there.
But it looks like the ports and displays are only connected to the nvidia gpu.seeker_moc and hmscott like this. -

Wish we would get some reviews on the refresh of the 502 and 702 already. I need a new laptop but no way I'm pulling the trigger without knowing if these new models addressed the overheating and battery drain while gaming issues of the 2016 models
-
Well, I just ordered one (silver GL502VM-DS74 base model) on Amazon, it'll arrive Friday (gotta love the prime $10 next day shipping). I'll update with my initial impression and the real specs once I get it. I'd like to say I'll do a full review, but I'll be working 12-hour days all next week so I won't have the time right away.
-
Nice!
Congrats man, can't wait to hear impression about temps and fan noise on these new models.
Thinking of getting the 17'' version myself.seeker_moc likes this. -

I've never made a video before, nor do I have a Youtube account, but I might try it depending on how much time I have. I have no problems with taking/sharing photos though.

photos are good enough. Videos don't really add value, as nothing is moving.
I wanna see the bottom panel and inside.
and lcd screen model numberLast edited: Jan 12, 2017seeker_moc and IKAS V like this. -
I just want to know if it overheats and if battery drains while gaming
-
LCD model number is my biggest concern as well. I'll definitely get you that as well as internal pics.
Anyway, I got my tracking number from Amazon today, and guess what... UPS Ground delivery on Tuesday. I paid extra for 1-day "guaranteed delivery by Friday Jan 13th", but it ends up getting delivered even later than if I went with the regular Prime two-day. I can't believe it, I've never had Amazon do me like that before. After going back and forth with a customer service rep on chat, they said they'd call UPS and have it delivered Saturday... we'll see. If it doesn't get here Saturday I won't be able to post much until next weekend. I should still have time to confirm specs at least.

get your money back for the 1 day shipping regardless.

B&H photo and video has the 1070 model in stock and I ended up ordering one. It should be in by next Wednesday.

one other important thing to check for the gl502vm is whether it has hdmi 2.0 upgrade, or still has the old hdmi 1.4
but the only way to find that out is to plug in a 4k monitor at 60hz -
Can you check if it has a TB3 port and report back on temps and fan noise when gaming?
Also what rated power supply does it come with?
Thanks! -
Some guy has the 1070 model here. He said he will do benchmarks and temps later. Weird the 1070 model is still orange? Is the VM the only silver model? Btw the 1070 model has a 230w power supply as per this video
-
seems like there are two color options. My guess is that they have a surplus of black chassis, and are gonna use them all until gone.tyrannosaurus_rex likes this. -

f..k it. I just ordered the gl502vm-ds74 too. I have 30 days to play with it.
might arrive next week. Will try to do a full spec ongoing review, just to end the confusion and all the sh*tty youtube reviews that don't cover the important details.
gonna bring it to bestbuy and plug it into their 4k monitors and tv's to see if there's hdmi 2.0.
Also gonna see how well it decodes 4k pornosLast edited: Jan 13, 2017tyrannosaurus_rex likes this. -
Wonder how long till the refreshed 702s are available to buy. I was super close to buying a 502 today but I really loved my previous 17" gaming laptops.

I hate fan noise! -
Yeah cooling is my main concern. Btw any word if it's coming in tomorrow?
-
-
Unless you increase fan size, you can't have better cooling with less fan noise at this performance level
What the GL502 needs to do , and doesn't do currently.... is spin faster and louder at high temps.
Fans are not spinning fast enough, that's why everyone is cooking at 90C.
To stay cool, you need bigger or thicker fans, or more chassis volume. or more heatsinks. -
shipping service after it's sent. I tried contacting them again today, and the service rep more or less told me just to deal with it and wait until it comes, then dropped the conversation. I'll have to wait until Tuesday. I'll still do a spec verification, but I'm seriously thinking of just returning it and buying it again somewhere else to ensure Amazon doesn't profit after messing up this badly. I would have bought it from a reseller if I'd known it'd take this long to arrive. -
-
just get your shipping fee refunded by amazon.
I ordered mine from jet.com, and one of its partners is supposed to ship it to me between january 19-24. Hopefully i get it sooner. It all depends how fast they process.Last edited: Jan 14, 2017 -

Gl502 with i7-7700, 1070 120hz IPS here...
No battery drain issues... it's a 230w brick for sure. Still pretty slim, doesn't get hot at all.
Fans honestly impress me. It's the sound of air. Even when machine is getting too hot though...
Took out 1TB Hd to confirm my fear that I had some coil whine. Audible at idle sitting in Windows from about twice as far away as you'd sit from laptop. Bummer but livable.
Speakers: never had previous 502s but I'd agree with reviews I've read. No change in this model. Find the sound tinny and under powered. OK though since fans are pretty quiet.
OK, so temps. At idle the CPU sits at 60c. Start a AAA game... Forcing it to stay 60fps the CPU is OK still. Low 80s. GPU about 75C.
Things take off though at 120 pretty bad (119 actually so I force gsync to stay on). Have screenshots I've sent to Asus of the CPU hitting 98C. GPU was up there but not alarming.. maybe mid 80s.
With my idle temp as high as it is (tell me if you'd think that's normal idle for a 7700hq?) And my system nearing the thermal limit (turning off once) I wonder if there's a design issue or bad paste job.
Really though, if we were talking about 60fps gsync being all you'd expect this machine to do, I'd be impressed. Fan noise and temps such a great blend.BringTheRain403 and tyrannosaurus_rex like this. -
502vs kaby lake benchmarks. Furmark max CPU hit 90c and gpu hit 75c iirc

The guy fk'd up the stress test at the end by hiding the clock speeds. We don't know if the cpu throttled.
What usually happens during overheating is the cpu will throttle and temps will stabilize, while cpu load is still 100%.... but 100% of 1500mhz or something like that.
When I get my 502vm, I'm going to do a thorough cooling test. Also going to compare temps when the lid is closed 90%, where the heat can blow out unobstructed.
I have a feeling Asus is using the exact same motherboards on the kaby lake models as the old skylake models.

Yeah but that was first time running a game, and I picked one capable of over 60fps. The numbers I've posted in the first post are after I've "broken in". I didn't say, but they both were initially worse at idle. Maybe the temp spiked too fast to react?
I have silver. I read the whole thread was it you asking about the material? It's silver plastic by the keyboard. The lid does not show finger prints, though that ROG logo that appears to be a muted silver in photos turns orange still.
Thanks for the vid link. So idle I'm the same, but he hits 91C/74C. Also I haven't even stress tested yet. Just trying to use it for what it was designed. To still be as fair as possible the system now will stably play at 98C for hours, although it is winter here right now.
I didn't see in the ROG center or BIOS anywhere to change fan profile but I'll look around more and research that today. You're right. You'd think I was in some kinda quiet mode the way it's going so far. -
You can get into the ROG gaming Vetter by hitting the ROG button on the top of the keyboard by the number keypad.

Can you post some pics of the silver one or a video? Sick of looking at stock photos lol
Edit: also according to the guys video you cannot set fan speed only see what speed the fans are running at. Weird because with the 553/753 you can set the fan speed from Game Center. Those ones also have aura keyboard where 502 and 702 don't. I don't get some of the decisions Asus makes tbh.Last edited: Jan 15, 2017 -
Photo1: Internals. Seems to look like I've seen in the previous gen exactly.
Photo2: Here are the vents at 90 degrees open. Not really blocked like some are concerned about. I think you might get a 1-2C difference at most closing it back to unblock.
Photo3: Metal Lid. This color doesn't show prints too bad. I've made no effort to not touch it, nor have I wiped it down since getting it.
Photo4: Just one more closer up for you to see that front silver plastic.

Maybe SpeedFan can read and control the fan speed. -
