Great feedback and I do agree with your rationale. Good thing I did receive a $100 discount off of retail when I picked it up.
I had no idea about the poor paint job so I'll keep an eye on that.

Do you have any recommendations for a potential replacement? If I do decide to return this I'd like to pick up something along the same lines in the same price range. I did see an MSI apache that looked promising but for some odd reason they are only pairing it with a 3gb version of the 1060. Couldn't find another variant at all. Strange.
    Thanks!

the MSI options which are cheaper than this do not have thunderbolt 3, if that matters to you.
I'm hoping thunderbolt egpu boxes become cheaper in the next few years, so I won't buy any laptop without thunderbolt these days

The only other option is alienware 15, but it's heavier. It has a bunch of connectors for futureproofing.

so they still haven't learn a thing from their previous designs like the ASUS ROG G501 where the vents are obstructed as f*ck thermal temps that is 65-68*c during idle, 70-74*c during normal usage, 90-95*c during long hours of gameplay (i know this because i own one, already re-pasted twice and no its not a faulty unit either, they replace mine twice when i bought it from an official ASUS shop in a local mall, my cousin have the same model but he ordered it online from abroad both have the same exact thermal issues)

I'm not sure how important it will be for me but I'd like to have the option open when there is more support. Thanks for the recommendations!

On a bit of a side note - is anyone with a GL502VT or GL502VM or a Kaby GL502 with a 1060 noticing a bit of flex under the "2" key and between the "Q" and "W"? Or is it just me. Curious.

the keyboard is plastic-soldered to the deck. maybe you broke one of those solder points.

Is it soldered? Cause the deck itself also flexes alongside it - it's the area right above the left fan. From what I've seen, there are 2 large metal plates holding the keyboard in place and it is connected to the deck around the sides.

yeah, it's soldered with melted plastic rivets.
There's a metal plate beneath the whole keyboard.

yours sounds ok really. unless the QWE keys lie right above one of the two big hole cutouts

Yet - I've taken measurements - the fan cutouts are right under the 123QWE keys - I guess that's why it flexes inward slightly. I was originally thinking the backplate or a rivet might have gotten broken as there was a slight "thump" like you'd hear from pressing a plastic cola bottle the first time I would press a key each day but that might be the plastic cover moving about slightly.

Are these the same panels they put on the 120hz variants? That's why they're quoting it as 120hz IPS on multiple sources?

Post the links so we can look :)

AFAIK the "slow" 120hz IPS-like panel's were pulled last year - Clevo used them - and now all there are in the field are 120hz TN panels with wide-view characteristics - but noone should call them IPS.

Alright ssd is in. Bad news is that it was in fact coil whine. Since it's not the worst sound in the world, I'll live with it. Good news is that it feels like I just pumped a kilo of cocaine into this comp, because it's running beautifully.

Is anyone else experiencing battery discharge on the new kabylake gl502vs? I've noticed the battery going down 1-2% every 15 minutes when I play GTAV or Battlefield 1, even though I have it plugged in with the 230W adapter that came with the system.

that's weird. it should not discharge with a 230w. that's more than enough power.

how low does the battery discharge?

under normal use, it's supposed to discharge to 95%, then recharge.

I tried playing Battlefield 1 for about an hour and a half and it was down to 91%. I'm hoping that's normal and it doesn't get any lower.

    that's not normal.

i thought asus fixed the discharging problem from the skylake model with this update, but maybe it's not the case.

are you sure you have the 230w version of the adapter? What's the volts and amps?

run prime95 and furmark together for 2 hours, then see how much your battery discharges.

This is only to establish a consistent way to test, so that asus support team can do the same test with their own gl502vs unit.

Email asus support and explain how you tested.
wait until you hear their results before you decide to rma, because if this is a more widespread issue, they may not have a solution yet.
The last thing you want is to send it in, and get it back with the same problem.

Have you tried updating the bios to 301? I just contacted support and they told me to update the bios. I'm going to try some tests on it tomorrow.

Any reviews available for the DS71 with kabylake in terms of thermals and noise? Really set on buying this instead of the GS63VR.

So I just tested my gl502vsk and with the bios updated to 301, I didn't get any discharge running furmark and prime95 for 1 hour. The temps were about 80C for both the gpu and cpu. The fans are pretty loud at full load, but if you have headphones on, you won't hear the fans.

    Hi Guys/Gals,

I've been looking to get this laptop for a long time and I cannot find anyone selling this online. Can you let me know where you all got the 502VS KL version from? And is it worth the money to get the KL version or the previous gen version?

    Regards,

If you don't mind getting the 702vs, they have it at the same price on xoticpc, although you're only getting a standard 1tb hdd with it.

    Hey yo!
I'm planning to buy this model specifically: http://www.excaliberpc.com/653902/asus-rog-strix-gl502vs-ws71-15.6.html

But I see the DS71 is a good option too. Do you know if both come in Black and Silver colors? I prefer the black one.

My main tasks are video editing, motion graphics, 3D and post production work. (After Effects, Premiere, Cinema4D and Davinci Resolve). And the game I play sometimes are: Battlefront, Alien Isolation, Battlefield or Batman games.

Which one will you recommend since I don't care too much the 120Hz screen, and in the future I will replace both the SSD and hard drive to a 7200 one.

What is important to me is the option to connect at least two external monitors and stability for long periods of work.

Hi, but the BIOS 3.01 update did NOT fix the problems of discharging/overheating according to the many users here https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?88742-GL502VS-Discharging-while-in-charge/page33
I wanted this laptop so bad but I don't want to buy it with the discharge/heating problems and the MSI GT72VR is like 1800$ which is a lot.

2 or 3 users recently bought the GL702VS and posted about it somewhere on here - IIRC, they didn't have issues with battery discharge and their heat issues were fixed by manually controlling the fans through the RoG app - according to them, takes about 2 mins to apply the profile and that reduces temps by 10-12*C

maybe they mistook the normal 5% discharge as abnormal.

the battery is always fluctuating between 95-100%, as all recent asus laptops do

No they said it in the link I sent :p Just go through that page 33 "Just for feedback on BIOS update 301, still discharging under "Heavy" load, 10 percent discharged after 30 minutes of gaming." The laptops are still not taking enough Wattage even with a 230 Watt charger and the latest BIOS 301 update.

i haven't tried installing windows 7, but i don't see why you can't install it on a spinning hdd.

use a gpt usb drive, or reformat the hdd to mbr and use an mbr bios compatible usb drive.

I was thinking about using windows 7 loader to upgrade to win10 pro. But never got around to it.

Hi guys. Well I just got my GL502VS and I noticed that on the lower left, the sticker which glues the frame to the LCD itself isn't so strong? There's a small gap and if you look really well you could see the led lights inside. It doesn't really affect normal operation but I was wondering if you guys also experienced the same thing? I really don't want to return it since I'm on the road and busy. Will this eventually be a problem in the years to come or is it fine if I leave it like that. I'm pretty happy with the laptop but the problem is this is the last piece the store had when I bought it and it's kinda hard to find this model in my country. Thanks!
