Hello guys,
So I bought the GL502VT for like 3 months ago. Since the day I bought it, it frequently crashed when playing games (mainly Overwatch). Like it crashed and froze completely and I couldn't do anything except hard restart. After I put the settings down to low and turn on vsync (which is very unsatisfying because using a 970m with those settings), the crashing lessened and I thought I can get over that. But for now, whenever I play games( from Broforce to GTA V), the laptop crashed really frequently, and sometimes just using the battery to watch something on youtube, it would crash. I think it is something like a power outage problem.
I tried all the recommended stuff: upgrade BIOS, clean Windows install, reinstall driver using DDU, turn off Afterburner or Throttlestop, change settings in the power management,... but it didn't work for me.
The problem really irritates me, paying so many money for this and I have to run games on low settings and experience crashes. And I really want to find a solution, since I worked a lot on this computer and store a lot of my works on this machine so I don't really want to return or go on the whole warranty process and then have to reinstall all the programs...
Do you have any advice? Or should I just return it ?
Thank you in advance !!!

What is your temp?

It never exceeds 70oC when playing OW, on normal task, I would say 30-40oC but rarely went to 40oC

Thank you for your reply!
I can't find the RST anywhere on my laptop but I followed some instruction and disabled it through the device manager.
But the problem still persists.
I just recorded the video of the crash (notice the sound when it crashes):
And I tried to disconnect the monitor and the keyboard, left only the mouse connecting, but it didn't help. -

I had a similar issue with mine - it's a faulty motherboard (at least was on mine) - RMA it.

You've done pretty much everything on your side.

Thanks guys, probably going to RMA it. It will be a longgggg way to go through this process. And I need a laptop for my work. Well start to backup data then.
I'm just feeling really sad now
Also a quick question, I bought an EVO 250GB and installed into the notebook, should I remove it or just let it there? Idk if Asus would do anything with that. -
You should remove it since you bought it its yours.

Have you tried doing any stability testing? Random crashes are often times caused by a failing memory module. I would start troubleshooting by running Memtest86+.
http://www.memtest.org/
If this test is OK then try a harder test like Prime95. Version 26.6 does not use the AVX instructions so it will get hot but not insanely hot like newer versions do. A properly functioning laptop should be able to run both programs without crashing. For Prime95 I would run the Small FFT test as well as the Blend test to further test your memory.

Your laptop might get hot as hell but it should not crash and Memtest should not report a single error.tetramelos likes this. -
Thanks for your reply unclewebb, I really like Throttlestop, have been used it since my old Dell Vostro throttled the CPU as hell. I'm currently using it on my current Asus to undervolt the i7-6700HQ. Keep up the great work !!!
I'm stressing my notebook with Prime95 26.6, probably will run it for 3-4 hours. And then I will do the memtest86+. Hope that I can find a solution for the machine without having to RMA... -

had issues with every ROG Gaming laptop I bought, ASUS......never againtetramelos likes this. -
@Phoenix, I think that I experienced the same kind of crashed you had with the Asus.
I am currently, not sure about the RMA. I heard that sometimes the service center made the problem worse, so it is really a hit or miss.
I felt really being deceived because of Asus's QC. And now I'm afraid of RMA. Tbh I don't know what to do now. Some of my friends told me that I'm just unlucky. But I didn't pay lots of money just to join the QC lottery like this. And I'm just a college student so money is a big problem for me. Probably never buy any laptops from them again. So disappointed.
And through my case I really want people to spread the words about Asus QC, so that they won't get into trouble like me. Before I bought this, I read lots of reviews, scroll through posts in the forum and feel that I will be fine with this laptop. I didn't know that previous ROG laptop also had QC problems. Some Asus ROG laptops (G751JY/JT, GL502VT/VY) are usually cheaper compared to other brands like MSI or Sager (at least when I did the research), but the price differences are because of the QC. Lots of reviews about them after over 6 months of uses are parts malfunction.
---
Also, I ran the FFT test for 3 hours, no problem so far, will do the Blend and memtest today.

Here is my full ASUS experience if it interests you from a real user, maybe an unlucky one..... old post though back when I had an Alienware 18...... @Galm
if you want a laptop that works, avoid anything from ASUS.
click on the spoiler:
1) Returned my ASUS G751JY
2) ASUS = 0 quality, it's a matter of luck if you get a 100% working ASUS laptop, or any piece of hardware made by ASUS.
3) All the latest and previous last 3 Gen ASUS ROG laptops have USB port issues, it's all over their ROG forums
4) And old post I made 1 year back.......
All ASUS laptops has a problem with the left USB 3.0 Ports. You plug in a USB 3.0 HDD to the left top or left bottom ports and it will randomly keep disconnecting. That is for all G750 series, JX,JW,JH,JZ,JS, you name it. don't believe me, just hang around on the ROG forums and see the jokes of problems they have. pathetic for the amount of money you pay. problems with screens, auto dimming problem, contrast problem.
I wouldn't use an ASUS laptop anymore even if they gave it to me for free! cheap Taiwanese crap!
Did I forget to mention...
their implementation of Optimus is messed up...it is very tricky to force games to use your nVIDIA GPU unless you do a lot of settings and even then users on their forums complain that the freakin' games are using the Intel HD Graphics! LOL! horrible!
you want Testimony ? Please take the time to read this:
why ASUS? because people who buy ASUS cannot afford Clevo, no other reason on earth...that's a fact...I was one of them...
First laptop, 2 years ago..
G73Sw:
bought it and ran home like a little child wanting to see my lights in the chiclet keyboards....ooops...no lights...tried all driver updates..BIOS update...nope..
Called ASUS, they told me to bring it to the service center it's an easy fix!! whaaaat?? I buy a 2000 USD laptop and go to the service center next day? oh well..I did and they activated it with their BIOS tweak utility that they don't give to customers! great quality control Taiwanese Engineers! send out laptops for sale that don't work properly as advertised...
after 1 week...the screen started giving me fuzzy images...closing/opening the screen lid fixed the problem....wow!! what did I buy? a 1990 Toyota Corolla or a brand new gaming laptop??
They said they need to replace my screen! wow!! the laptop can't last a week without being repaired! i fought for a refund and got it after a long hassle...
next laptop...
ASUS G75VW,
ASUS decided to remove their awesome creative sound blaster audio chipset and put some cheap VIA audio chipset which made the subwoofer act like a center speaker rather than a subwoofer..
also..I only had the option to get the matte screen...oh well...people say matte is good...right? NOPE! not on ASUS! the ASUS matte screens look as if someone spilled grease all over them. very grainy image especially if you look at a white screen such as these forums or Google..if you look close..you can see the pixels of colorful rainbows! again shocked in awe for this cheap crap!
So I called ASUS complaining about the quality of the screen, they offered to change it to the 3D screen not coz I want 3D, but only because that is the only screen they have that is Glossy..
took the laptop...2 days..I get a call...sorry sir, we changed your screen, but fried your motherboard....we have no spare motherboards...so if you pay $500 USD we can give you a G750JX instead or you can wait till god knows when till we get a motherboard from Taiwan...
so I got the G750JX...
very bad driver support....ASUS released the win 8.1 drivers after 6 months of win 8.1 was released...anyone who upgraded while having the old drivers either got a non booting laptop after the upgrade due to outdated bluetooth/wifi drivers or had horrible problems....
next comes the 2D performance of their GTX770M....there is something not right about it! 3D was fine and performed as it should...but 2D was glitchy and choppy...imagine even a simple game of solitaire..the motion of the cards wasn't fluid...I used to get jealouse when I see my friends' Intel HD Graphics perform so smoothly in the Windows environment while my brand new gaming laptop cries in 2D...opening tabs in firefox...wow..another plethora of jerkiness / slow motion
next...they put cheap Atheros WLAN chipsets which cannot connect above 72 MBPS!! wow! had to pay 50 USD and get a Bigfoot Wireless N-Killer from the US and pay customs just to have a laptop perform like a normal computer
next.... USB 3.0 problems..
basically, I had to connect my USB drives to the right ports and the left ones were kept for my mouse and printer? why? because ASUS cannot produce a piece of hardware that functions right! they claim all ports are USB 3.0 and they are all in blue color...BIG LIE! it wasn't only me, I posted this on the ROG forums and every single one of the members verified the same!
I can't find my thread that I started, but here are 2 examples I quickly grabbed:
Asus G750 USB 3.0 Ports not working with some things
and
Is it normal that the top left USB port is very slow?
ASUS? HELLL NO!!
Worst case scenario, save some money and wait, then get a real gaming laptop from Alienware and be happy for life! rather than bite your fingers after you buy your ASUS
A quick Google search on the G750JX presents exactly what I experienced! I've probably formatted that laptop over 200 times twice daily just trying to make it work but every time some quirk happens...

Honestly - I'd say you, like me, just got unlucky - I mean, it happens. The RMA rate on these laptops is something like 1-2% - I've also had to RMA Lenovo and Dell products. I mean, compare the amount of complaints to the Razer Blade users - now that is serious QC deficiency. And if you are in Europe, consumer laws are much stricter than the US

@Phoenix, I didn't know that previous Asus laptops had always been like this. I don't know if I can ask for the refund or not since I bought this 3 months ago. And probably I won't trade for new laptops if they asking me for more money.
My roommate had an Alienware 15 R2 equipped with 965m and he had no problem with it so far.
@don_svetlio, yeah I know that I'm unlucky, but I'm really hesitant to RMA since I don't know if it will help or not. Paying shipping fee and wait for the whole way from IN to CA will take a while. But it's the best thing I can do for now.
But anyway, I really love the screen of the laptop. Have to agree that the laptop has a good IPS panel for image editing.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Pay shipping? Wait, doesn't the service centre handle that? I mean, they have to by law here - is US consumer law so bad?
On a side note - i feel ya man. A while back, a friend and me both bought Y50s - his is now 2 years old and fine and dandy - mine had a busted screen, broken SSHD and almost busted hinge. It's seen more road trips than me. -
check your state laws.
maybe you have something like us.
in california, if there is no service center close to where you live, the mfgr has to pay shipping.
Also, on my box it says asus pays shipping both ways
As for crashing, did you scan your hdd for bad sectors?tetramelos and don_svetlio like this. -
Long time no see guys, it has been a busy week for me.
I haven't scanned for bad sectors yet. I will try to scan for it now.don_svetlio and hmscott like this. -
Do you have the crashes while running throttle stop, or is that reset to defaults and turned off?
This can cause crashes like you have described.
Also bad memory can cause this, best test with a memtest86 boot memory stick.
Can you easily reproduce the crash with some game or so? That would make troubleshooting easier.tetramelos likes this. -
Yes, I will try to produce the crash again.
Also, I tested both my SSD and HDD with HD Tune Pro. No errors reported.
Prime95 26.6 Blend Test ran for 2 hours with no problem.
I will do the memtest soon because I didn't have an USB with me right now.
And I will try to reproduce the crash, I played Overwatch and it seemed whenever the temps go over 70oC, the crash would likely to happen. I will record another video to monitor the crashing.
I'm not sure about throttlestop but sometimes I disabled it and the crash still happened. I will post my throttlestop settings when I get back to my room. -
I would completely uninstall throttlestop, until you are sure it's also happening while it's not anymore installed. This tool can make lot's of issues with your pc and the newer the cpu the worse
GL502VT just keeps freezing and crashing
