I have practically nothing running that would use the GPU except maybe Windows itself but the clocks keep going from low 2D to low 3D to full clocks and then back and forth..Is this normal or can I stop this?

Firefox uses GPU acceleration now, so that could be why, also I believe the latest skype uses GPU accel too now(dont quote me though). So I'd close them all out, then see if it is still fluctuating.

it appears to be firefox. I disabled hardware acceleration but it still does it.

Hrm, interesting, just to be sure, you also restarted firefox after u disabled correct?

Try using GPUz I can't say I have any experience with afterburner but maybe it is misreading, or causing the spikes.

Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.3 w/ ASUS ROG Skin | techPowerUp

I seem to stay pretty consistent at 50mhz with only FF open and hardware accel disabled, though I do go up to 202mhz when I have say a video player open.

no no no... dont be alarmed.. When the gpu is not under a load it goes to lower clocks as to save power and extend the life of the gpu. If you watch MSI Afterburner and start up perhaps a benchmark or Prime95...you will see the clocks go to the stock clocks. Do not be alarmed though man.. its normal. Mine does it to. Its simply to save power and not keep the gpu at full throttle when it doesn't need to be.

Yes, I restarted firefox a couple of times after disabling. Still going up into full 3D clocks, which is what I find the most odd. Seems to be stable after putting it to sleep though? Weird, I guess I'll watch it and see what happens now. I'm enjoying the 45C idle, right now, haha.

lol... Download prime 95, run it and you will see the clocks go back to stock.. As i said.. they only get lower because you dont need them. Its like a car .. On the freeway you go faster hence more throttle... in a school zone you go about 20.. way less throttle.. it does this to save energy and extend the life of the gpu.. simple dude. and we would not know about the sleep stability... SSD's are advised against getting put to sleep.

I'm not sure you understand this thread. Oh, and Prime 95 doesn't stress GPUs.

I understand this thread perfectly and it doesnt stress gpus but the clocks will go to stock clocks when you do it because ive done it.. I love when ppl think im stupid then turn out to be correct. If you wish, download furmark and use that then. How about you try it before you tell me i dont understand...
