I am having issues with my G73JH-A1 games keep crashing about 20 minutes into playing them. This issue only happens when I have the computer plugged into my TV via HDMI.

After about being in a game for 20 minutes the screen on my tv shows no signal from the laptop, my keyboard no longer lights up (my USB keyboard not the one on the laptop itself.

When I unplug the HDMI and try to just use the normal screen, the screen just stays off and the laptop stays powered on. I can't do anything at this point besides turn it off and back on

my bios, vbios and video drivers are all fully updated.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be updated or a way to solve it

thank you so much in advance this is really annoying considering I bought this laptop to play games via the HDMI out

Follow the vBios upgrade info if you have not done that. That should fix your issues.

Search HWMonitor . that should get you a good Current/low/high reading.

Hey spinaltap862, I have only connected mine to HDMI three or four times. I let my son play WoW for about an hour the last time and it worked fine. I just wanted to throw that data point out for you so you don't think it's a design flaw with the JH. It should work.

I would really be looking at drivers/software issue. I'm running the latest Realtek drivers... 2.52 I think. Also, I'm running the HDMI driver I got from the Realtek site (2.49) along with Catalyst 10.8. In my mind, it could be the HDMI audio output driver just as easily as a video issue. I realize your video is shutting off, but that could just be a symptom.

Can you update to Realtek 2.49 and try the ATI HDMI driver available on the realtek site?

    Realtek

Go to the link and accept the license agreement. It should list the drivers for you. Perhaps if you refresh your audio drivers, HDMI driver, and Catalyst it will straighten this up for you.

All of this assumes that your temps are OK and your GPU isn't just overheating and flipping out.

so I am not sure what the temperature's should be at, but after playing for about 40 minutes with no crash (rare occurance) my temp on my CPU was about 75 degrees celsius

and my GPU was at 86 with the max saying 91
    are these normal temps?

I am going to look into those drivers now I know for sure my catalyst are all the way updated I am not sure about the realtek looking into now thanks for the suggestion

sorry its taken so long for me to post again, I now have all of those audio drivers suggested fully updated and I am still having the issue.

However I did try something different last time it crashed. Instead of instantly turning it off and then back on (by holding the power button) I simply just waited and the computer shut off on its own, when I pushed the button to turn it on again it said resuming windows, it then put me back in my game (however I got kicked due to lack of activity) I am not sure if that means anything or gives anyone else any kinds of ideas but I thought i'd post.

thanks so much for all your help guys I really appreciate it I would be lost without the great instruction on this forum

As a test, try disabling any sort of sleep/hibernation modes in Power Options in Windows, to ensure it's not just going into one of those (for some reason).

after doing a ton of testing I figured out, it is going into some kind of sleep mode only when the lid is closed. If I leave the lid open (but still play on HDMI) it does not go into this mode

I have gone through all the power options mutliple times and everything is set to let the computer never go to sleep or hibernate.

I am thinking maybe power4gear is causing issues should I uninstall that?

Several knowledgeable people in these forums have recommended that you never close the lid on a desktop replacement style laptop while using it. There is a high potential for overheating it because this will limit air flow. There has been much debate about exactly where the G73 pulls it's air from but it is definitely better to leave the lid open.

Thanks for telling me this I really didn't think it mattered, if I have it part way open is that good enough? I can't have it fully open or else it won't fit in my entertainment center.

and so far since deleting power4gear I haven't had any problems (even with lid closed)

ill post again if it still isn't working after testing some more games
