I have an other thread talking a little bit about it but a made this thread to be more specific.
I am now using an external screen, speakers and keyboard to be able to use the laptop as a desktop when I am at home since last week. The thing is should I do this? Gaming with the lid closed doesn't seem to affect my temps much, but the keyboard gets way hotter (so the screen too) and it even had a burnt smell 1-2 times. I am scared about damaging the screen when having the lid closed. I had my laptop on with the closed lots and lots of times before (most of the time I won't shut it down, I will just close the lid) and never had any problems. It's only since now, if I have it 10 hours a day with the lid closed with maybe 3 hours of intense gaming that changed things a little bit.
Is gaming lid closed everyday a good thing?

If you're getting a "burnt smell" you should probably leave the screen open...
My laptop is constantly plugged into an ext monitor + keyboard + mouse setup and I just leave the screen at a 45 degree angle open so it can vent, while still keeping stuff from falling into the keyboard -
What I did at the first time was just lifting it a little bit but still, there's no way to know if it damages the LCD. I see a few people that says they wouldn't risk their screen and I see others saying they do it all the time. -
I'm guessing you're really cramped for desk space if there's no other place to put your laptop.
Heat is the enemy of all things in a laptop, and I don't believe the screen is any exception. -
I dont have any problems at all with the lid closed and my keyboard barely gives off any heat. What are your temps like?
I had an Acer 6920G which had the main fan vent just below the screen it was built into the subwoofer just above the keyboard instead of underneith or behind as most laptops are. The heat actually was blown onto the screen upwards lol it used to reach a good 80oC and higher and the screen was still in mint condition a year after I sold it so I wouldn't worry to much. -
Well right now it's summer and it's SUPER hot, so my temps are higher, but in idle my gpu is about 63C with and without lid closed. I know with lid closed I get 95C with maybe 30 minutes of TF2 but I didn't check if I keep it open. When I repasted it was a bit before the hot weather and it wasn't going more than 85C in furmark. I wouldn't stress it right now with lid closed.
It's not "that bad", but my keyboard gets hot (it's strange because for the past year it was never hot and now since 2 months it's hot) and that's why it heats u my screen when it's closed.
Like I said, it doesn't seem to affect my temps that much but it's really for the screen. I don't want to be all like "it's ok my temps are fine" and one day I start having issues with my screen like some people experience. -
Ambient temps plays a huge part in idle and max temps so that could be why but I dont think you need to worry really. Have you got a laptop cooler? Might be an idea investing in one because what I have done is bought the Storm-SF19 which is an absolute beast and I have just removed the maintenance panel and sit it on top.
When im gaming on the external screen I just put it on my table lid closed with the fans on full blast and it does not going above 70oC because with the maintenance panel removed its blasting the GPU with cold air.
The cooler is costly but its mine for life and I wont need anything else with this beast it can hold an M18x with ease. -
I have this g73 since a year, I love it since I need to bring it almost everywhere I go. The thing is that the last games showed to me that maybe this beast isn't the beast it used to be anymore, and the performance lover I am needs more for the next titles. I always wanted to build myself a desktop, but I needed to buy this laptop before building a desktop.
So... I was thinking of waiting maybe 2 months (for the next big titles) before building one, but this heat thing + the good deals this week on almost every piece of hardware I want left me confused.
If it's safer to buy one right now for my money and for my laptop, I will buy what I need right now. I just have one click to do. Unless people think the g73jh is still overkilling every games and no need for upgrades? -
Never should you substitute a masterpiece of computing, a portable gaming facility, that you could take over the world with anywhere and at anytime! For a 2 foot box.
Higher electricity costs, ease to mod and upgrade (no fun at all), massive, not portable, ugly, noisy...
I can go on.......
Not to mention they are like a cult those Desktopians they are a sect of people who despise those who enjoy mobility instead of stability.
Notebooks For Life! -
and the other one I had before... I would never throw awaye this laptop, I need it almost everyday (so what you said about not having the mobility isn't a problem that much)
But instead of changing this one for a better one that will cost a lot and still not having the power of the desktop I would get right now.
And for your information, the thing I like the most in my life is playing arround with hardwareLaptops and desktops... So building a desktop would make me happy like a little kid at Christmas

No comment. The laptop will be deprived by a box. You dont need a desktop our JH's still punch out the performance pick yourself up a 920XM if you want more power and an SSD that is what im doing.
If it is just to get 20 more FPS save your money I would rather game at 30fps than at 50fps for a grand. -
Easy does it, Dallers!
Have both, why limit yourself?
Yes, I´m a Lappy-Heretic and sworn PC guy, and then I bought this JH-monster and got numerous warnings for my unhappy rants here in The Lappy Cathedral!
But now I´m happy, and you know why, right?
The 920XM will arrive on monday onboard a specially chartered flight from the UK to the smiling paradise of Siam, and I will be smiling too...
Joking aside, you really can get an awesome PC for very little money, especially with Sandy Bridge, a good Vertex 2 or 3, and cheap AMD cards... -
Good call on the XM though!
Dont do it Blacklucus. Go extreme its cheaper and much more exciting. Mobility FTW. -
doesn't the screen turn off when you have the lid closed and an external monitor on? That should help with the heat a bit. There's still a slight gap between the screen and keyboard when you have it closed so it should not be a problem.

I was thinking that if you get that much heat coming up from the KB, then maybe you should check the fans and vents that they are positioned properly and also unobstructed. The kb area should not be getting this warm.

Dallers, I do want a desktop for next games since I don't think they will run at crazy fps on ultra. It's not 36 to 50 fps but more 25 fps on medium on witcher 2 to 60 fps on ultra minus ubersampling.
I don't want to spend on my laptop in any way, since it won't last forever. If I buy my desktop, I will keep the case, the psu, the hdd, the drive, ... for a long time and will upgrade it easily after. And also, I like recording my games but the g73 is starting to not record them all at 30 fps. What i'm saying is that I will get one in 2 months or I will get one right now. right now I have a deal, but is it worth it or I should wait?
That's where the heat comes in. When I'm about the closed lid, it's to know if yes it's better to get my desktop now since it's less risks for my laptop or no I really need to wait.
My lcd does turn off. What I'm saying is just that having the lid closed blocks some airflow and the keyboard+lcd gets way hotter like that and it scares me for my lcd.
My keyboard doesn't produce much heat for a laptop, but does way more than before. I repasted and everything and I clean my vents. I will check if there's a problem inside, but I'm not sure about it.
If there's any chance to damage the screen, I will totally go for the desktop right now. And I guess you can't say that the g73 still outperforms every games
