I have been looking for a laptop to replace my desktop and have the functionality to be brought around campus. I like the G73 but is is HUGE and would be hard to carry around on a regular basis. The 15 in size seems to fit my needs best but I still want a good gaming computer. Would it be recommended to wait for the N53 to come out or get the G73 now and enjoy it?

It's not as big as you think, nor as heavy. You could wait for the G53 release.

The g73 isn't much larger than the g51, if you've seen it. If you want a good gaming computer, the best option is to get a desktop. The next best option is a 17 inch desktop replacement, because very few 15 inch laptops have adequate cooling systems (clevo and alienware are about the only ones that do!) for a powerful graphics card. Even the asus g50/51s aren't so great at heat dissipation (but they do the job).
And the n-series laptops tend to avoid full HD screens, if you're okay with that, then by all means get an e(N)tertainment laptop for gameplay.
I've got a g73, and a netbook. I used to have several 15 inch laptops (most of my laptops have been 15 inchers, actually), and the switch to 17 isn't a big deal. It's 2 inches, diagonally, and only adds another 3/4ths of an inch to length and width. (Basically the same as what chastity said: It really doesn't "feel" like a big difference from a 15 inch one). -
N53 != G53.
N53 is the only multimedia laptop that provides full HD screen (supposedly, from the information in ASUS world magazine March-April/May-June). It also don't weight as much as G series laptop (still around 2.7kg, instead 3.1~3.2kg for G51 alike) -
I went and tested a best buy version G73 and i can tell you they are pretty light for a 17 inch. i picked it up with one hand, with a battery installed, and it weighs about the same as my old sager 2090. its one of the lightest 17 inchers i have picked up. you should try the same if you dont have a best buy around you or live in another country.

I have been using the G73 for over 2 months now, so here's what I think in a nutshell:
1. I switched from an Acer 5535 (15.6") and the G73 is actually significantly bigger than your average 17". For starters, its actually 17.3" with an extended back (exhausts for proper heat disipitation - which I can tell you does a very good job). Hence, the rear which is about 2.6" in height will make it difficult to fit into your average 17" bag.
Portability isn't its strong point.
2. While the laptop is lighter than other gaming rigs in its class, (i.e. The Clevo or Alienware), I find it a little too heavy to be used on your lap. But, when you are carrying it around, along with a rather heavy power brick, it can be difficult to carry around, specially if you're walking.
3. Battery life isn't very good. Without actually downclocking the GPU, you won't get more than 1.30 hrs on this.
4. This thing is a good desktop replacement, in terms of specs, very few can match this laptop, specially in its price range. However, there are clear issues with updating graphics drivers for many users, and while a fix may exist (unofficial vBios flashing - it is by no means without risks, and definitely not for people who do not have experience with flashing). Creative software and sound glitches (still unresolved) have also been an issue. Bios update for a few users have also resulted in loss of key board lights or total bricks.
5. Lack of support from Asus...RMA's for this unit has been pretty bad. Just look around this forum, and you will get an idea. In addition, its been six months, and there still hasn't been any GPU driver update from Asus, only a bios update.
Bottom line, there is going to be a trade-off between sheer graphics power and portability. This thing is heavy, and its big, but if your lucky enough not to get a lemon, this can be a very apt desktop replacement. Lugging it around the campus can be difficult.
Keep in mind that we still don't have a confirmation on what the exact specs of the G53 is going to be. Neither its pricing.
The best thing to do, would be to go to a store, and try it yourself. If the "shoe fits" she's a keeper.
Goodluck.
Get G73 or wait for N53?
