    Hi,

I got a G73Jh-X1 just bought recently( three weeks ago). Everything works fine except when I try playing video games. Every time I run a game I get a black screen and everything locks up. The only thing I could do is hard reset the laptop to get the controls back. I tried updating my video card, but it didn't help at all. Any suggestions on how to fix this? :(

Tonkz, that sounds frustrating, are you using Steam for your games, or are they installed via CD/DVD ?

I disabled steam on start up when I installed it and also the bass setting is unchecked by default I never touch it.

By the way, when I first installed steam I installed BC2 and I could run it without getting black screen , but the other games I installed after would not work.

Do you think it could be faulty video card or ram?

Get Hwinfo and check the GPU data. Is the core clock speed and memory speed shown correctly? Is the card correctly identified? (i.e Radeon 5870 as opposed to Radeon 5800 series). Also, check dxdiag.exe and see if it shows any conflicts or issues. Also, which driver version are you running for the GPU? Which games specifically did you try to run?

Actually, the Steam conflict is with Realtek's Audio drivers, not Creative. Update to the latest if you haven't already.

1st question: not sure how to read the clock speed and memory speed if shown correctly

2nd question: Yes it is correctly identified as Radeon 5870

3rd question: What am I looking for exactly?

    4th Question: version 10.7 I believe

    5th question: Starcraft II (cd/dvd)
    Medal of Honor Beta (Steam)
    Bad Company 2 (Steam)

I don't get the black screen while running bc2, but sometimes it goes to windows mode automatically(while playing) and it is hard to put it back on full screen. (First game installed)

MoH Beta when I start it it goes automatically to windows mode(1/4 of the computer screen) and the game will run and goes to the game menu screen, but if I click the game it will automatically goes to fullscreen and goes entirely black and no way to escape from it unless I hard reset it. (2nd game installed)

Starcraft II goes to black screen upon running it. (3rd game installed)

I tried lowering screen resolution, updating drivers both video card and sound card, but same result.

By the way, I updated my bios to 209 if that has any relation to this incident.

I have already updated my realtek drivers, but it did not work. Thanks for the suggestion :)

By the way, if I try to always hard reset my laptop will it have negative effect on my laptop?

I had this as well as soon as I updated to catalyst 10.6, at times the screen goes black but music still plays, at other I get a buzz sound and have to hard-reset, it is annoying because in my case it doesn't happen every time, it's unpredictable.

    1. When you start up Hwinfo, on the window that pops up, on the right hand side, you should see all the details regarding your gpu. It should show the core clock to be 700 and the memory to be 1000 (when you're running on High performance).

    2. Its not really a question is it? But its good that the GPU is identified correctly. Whats your Windows Experience Index score for the GPU?

    3. In dxdiag, click the display tab, and look for notes at the bottom of the page (*if there is any hardware conflicts, it would be shown here).

Finally, given that both SC II and MOH are beta's, it is likely they may have issues with current generation drivers. I remember even after Half LIfe 2 was retailed, there was a bug for Ati card owners which prevented the player from completing a task, and a hotfix had to be released.

I would suggest that you try some existing games such as Dragon Age or GTA IV, and see if you get any GSODs or crashes (on the 10.7 catalyst). If it doesnt crash after an hour of gaming, then its entirely likely that the black screens in MOH and SCII are software issue, and your G73 is a keeper :D
