Hey all. I just got my new drive today, put everything back the way it was (took about an hour for full restore, uninstall bloat, transfer 87 gigs from my old drive to this one, all performance tweaks redone, etc). Very fast boot times, pretty fast transfer times, but only gets a 5.9 in windows experience index. Now, I used to get that score on my old Inspiron with a regualar momentus 7200 rpm. So, is this normal? Perhaps the speed will show only in games and such, or maybe something isn't right. I followed the instructions in the slow ssd thread- everything was already set up that way. I even used Crystal disk info to disable the head parking. It's better than my stock scorpio blue, just thought it would be faster than this.

Even though it has the nand partition it is still a 7200rpm hdd in nature, so it will have the same score as your previous 7200rpm

Yup I read about this as well the Windows 7 experience score will remain the same as a normal 7200RPM drive. However the 4GB SSD built into it will allow for higher access speeds and it is quite clever in that it stores the sections of the hard disc drive you use the most in order to speed up the access when you require it.

The Momentus XT is not the same as an SSD though hence the price difference and you retain the 500GB space.

    *Update*
Despite the index score, I get an average boot of 17 seconds, post screen included, and game load times (initial loading, level loading, game saves, etc) are cut in half. First time run on games are standard 7200 rpm speed, then I got to thinking about the cache read and write, so I started them again and sure enough they ran MUCH faster. But that cache will fill up eventually...... Gonna get a straight ssd down the road. For now, $100 for this much performance boost is sufficient.

You will notice a performance increase with these things thats for sure and W7 Index score is very very flimsy to say the least.

When you get an SSD you can just switch the XT into the second space and it will very nice and fast then.

@ Dallers where is a good site to read up on what the best SSD's are. I want to get something with at least 100Gb, like yours.

I am new the SSD world :) It is a fantastic place to be however. I ended up picking up a Kingston because of its reviews being very reliable not requiring any new firmware and although it is mid range cheaper SSD I did not need anything too special nor could afford it. Mine runs at around 220Mb/s read 180mb/s write so easily twice as fast as a Seagate drive and its outstandingly fast compared to my 7200RPM. I boot in around 15 seconds once tweaked.

Here is my post that helped me to decide on an SSD all the advice here is very good if you intend to get a high end SSD.

SD26 is apparently only on new drives and not publicly available yet.

Us legacy XT drivers are still stuck with SD25 :)

I purchased it new from ebay. The sd25 (or maybe it's just the firmware) drives were buggy even after the firmware update. Mine is the new rollout. There isn't even a firmware update out for mine yet. The seller has a bunch of them, and they are brand new, $99. If the drive is the same, only with a newer firmware, is there a way I can dump the firmware so others could use it to update????

Yes, I did. I had read about the firmware update disabling the parking of the drive, along with other improvements. When I ran the firmware updater it said there was a mismatch. I ran the seagate detector program from their site and it said it was SD26.

    Hi folks,

On a french forum I found how to upgrade to SD26.

Here you are a link to dl SD26 => Download MomentusXT-ALL-SD26

It's an ISO file, burn it bootable, and follow the instructions.

    At your own risks.

    @+ ;)

Any particular reason for upgrading to SD26?

I´m on SD25, have no problems...

Sweet find! I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate this. I don't know the difference between SD25 and SD26, but from what I can gather it seems that SD25 still has a few kinks and parking issues.

I made a small SD26 pack for those with bootable USB sticks (and what Asus laptop owner doesn't have one of these already set up?!) Just copy the SD26 folder onto the USB drive, cd over to the folder, and just run flash-m.bat. Select "D" to do the update.

I edited the bat file so that it will find the contents properly. I find this easier than going through the hassle of burning a disk. Just flashed the XT drive in a G73SW, and worked perfectly. :) I'll be adding this to the Driver page as well.

    Yes, I did ;)

But your idea about using a bootable USB stick is very good :notworthy:

Those who have no cd burner will enjoy your SD26 pack.

SD26 is only a bugfix one and I believe it only addresses a single bug. So... no point unless you've noticed an issue.
