Got 2 packages out of 4 of my small copper blocks, how would I take off the existing tape and put on Sekisui?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Get creative. There's no right way, as long as its clean.
-
10x10? That would be pretty tiny. Well if the plug on the notebook is indeed a 12V 4 pin, that's fairly good news. Y adapters with 4 pin to molex are readily available and it improves the selection of fans we can use. Another method I was thinking about was using a USB fan and running the cable internally up to the outside port and the making a hole in the bottom panel for the wire to come out and connect outside. The latter method isn't as clean as using a Y splitter so ultimately if the Y splitter method doesn't work for some reason, I'll go that route. Adding copper blocks is great but they also need additional airflow to dissipate the heat they pick up. A combo of both would be great. If I keep this laptop long enough for the warranty to expire (highly doubtful), another possible mod could be to JB weld another heatpipe in and actively cool it. I love modding, I built an awesome water cooled system a few years back but unfortunately had to get rid of it once I started med school.

If you do water cooling in he G51 I will worship you as a god.
-
It wouldn't be hard to do at all if I used an external power supply for it (not sure if the motherboard could provide enough juice to power a water pump). But that kinda defeats the purpose in the end. Another mod to consider is replacing the horrible default speakers with something better. These are some of the worst speakers I've ever heard on any laptop. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
True that. It isn't too bad of an issue for me, though, since I always use a headset.
And the rest of my copper is taking forever to arrive. -
Hey forge could you do me a favor? I don't have access to a screw driver (I'm in a hotel atm) and I was wondering if you could take pictures of the speaker placements the next time you open up your system? I'm not sure if they are exposed when you take the bottom cover off, if not then no biggie.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I'll do that, sure. But from memory of the, oh, fifteenth time I've removed the heatsink I don't remember seeing anything speaker-ish. but I'm a newb and don't know what to look for. Pictures when I have a chance, then.

Currently my Temps for my G50v(9700m gt) max out at 76 degrees, which i love..however my idle temps are 47-49 degrees(with Zalman Nc2000, on full). Are my idle temps on the high side??

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Sounds good to me.

Back panel ordered! Thanks to the person that PM'd me! (don't want to mention who unless he doesn't mind). All out of stock now though, hope you got one Forge!
-
he PMed me too but I just closed my bank accnt (moving to the east coast and my bank doesn't have any branches there) so my only hope was paypal, and it isn't accepted there

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You mean that stupid board game that they turned into a MMO? -
yes, that one Soviet =p I guess he thought you really did have a G51VX-TU? =p
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
How did you know I have the rare G51VX-TU?
-
Everyone knows about it. Once mine is modded, it will be deemed a Clevo M860-G51. -
That sucks..I won't really be able to do much to mine until I get back to Florida after the 12th. -
yea and its already sold out
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
In my book, when a machine is hardware modded to a point where a substantial amount of effort and ingenuity has been put in to make it unique compared to the rest, it is given the "X" suffix to the name. For example, once kaltmond completes his cooling overhaul on his M860TU, it would be dubbed the M860TUX or M860TU-X depending on his preference. Once your G51 mod is complete, it will also be worthy of candidacy for the X badge by a counsel of current X users. We are a small yet elite group of users that defy our warranties and undertake a great amount of risk to take our notebooks to the next level, a level that defines the secret group. -
How drastic of an overhaul is deemed an X? I'll be attempting the following:
1. Speaker replacements (originals will be kept for warranty)
2. Low profile fan via Y splitter + copper blocks
3. Dremeling of the new panel to open up the fake filter and replacing it with a real fan grill + filter
4. Possible bios flash to 1v and higher clocks depending on how temps improve.
That's as far as I'll take it for now since I don't want to void the warranty unless I find some additional tweaks I can do. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
There aren't too many of the Notebook Extreme [NX] users yet, but from my arbitration, yes. Once completed your G51 is well within grounds for X. There should be a lot more of us ready for candidacy as the desire for modding has sharply risen in the Asus and Clevo forums.
I finally received my goodies from the bankrupt, now under new management, Xoxide. Cold USB fridge is cold. -
Is it a peltier usb fridge? If I had money to blow and lots of time, I'd want to mod one of those TEC based usb fridges and put it inside a laptop. Condensation would be the biggest issue to worry about but there's ways around that too. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes, it is a peltier fridge. The radiator and fan on the bottom was a dead giveaway. Yes, condensation is a an issue when active refrigeration is used to rapidly lower temperature.
I just put a northbridge heatsink in the fridge to test it out. My room temperature is 20*C with an RH of 62% and the baseplate of the fridge was already beginning to dew after a few minutes. However, according to my temp gun, the heatsink got to a chilly 9.2*C after a minute after taking it out of the box. -
Once the backpanels get back in stock again I fully plan to go all out modding mine. =p and I want a USB fridge! :O
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You should have picked one up when Xoxide was liquidating it's inventory. They had it for sale for $6 and the flexikeyboard I also got was going for $9.
-
If only NEC released after market products: http://www.mobilemag.com/2003/07/08/nec-develops-water-cooling-notebook-module/ USB fridge sounds great, wish I knew about that liquidation sale. -

Hey now, you mean great table top miniatures games that Mythic ruined by making a less than stellar fantasy MMO out of.

All aboard the copper train!
Yeah, that one. -
I gonna be the first out with a SilverMod, nigga.
Cu is for fools.

Has anyone tried an aluminum solution?
http://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/Akasa%5fVGA%5fRAM%5fheatsink%2ehtml
I know that copper absorbs heat better than aluminum but my understanding is that aluminum dissipates faster i.e. why most "optimal" solutions include a copper base and aluminum fins. Not to mention aluminum is lighter.
I would think that aluminum might be better under prolonged loads where the aluminum is able to dissipate the heat quicker once the heat sink has become heat saturated; even more so with large airflow.
Any thoughts? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I have those Akasa aluminium heatsinks on my GPU. They are the shortest ones I can find without resorting to physically sanding down the blocks. There are Clevo users that have tried putting all aluminium on their notebooks against my recommendation before and they have had very little results compared to if they had used copper.
I TL;DR'ed this. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f7/copper-vs-aluminum-cooling-adding-copper-168975/ -

Are those truly 4mm, not the "5mm but advertised as 4mm because the Chinese don't use calipers" ones?
And on another note, I am very unhappy with acousticPC right now. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes, these are truly 4mm. The Chinese copper blocks are 5mm.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Good to know, then. I doubt the smaller height would be helpful for where I want to place them, though.
And I really have to talk to AcousticPC. The first time I had ordered the dual RAM heatspread kit. When I got it I only got one pack of two heatspreaders, and I assumed that it was just that, the "dual" part referred to covering two sides of the RAM.
When I ordered the next set (I accidentally got the dual side again, since I can't fit two heatspreaders on the bottom RAM stick) I received two packs, that is, four heatspreaders.
So they owe me ten bucks. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
What? 10char
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I placed an order at Acoustic PC, for a dual-RAM heatspreader kit. When I received it, I only had one package, or two pieces, total. I assumed that the "dual" part meant I received a top and bottom, and only those. Did get me wondering why they were so expensive.
So they seemed to work, and I ordered another dual-RAM kit. When I received the second order, I noticed I had two sets, for a total of four pieces. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
So you have six pieces in total?
-
Apparently you didn't get it in the 4 times I tried explaining it to you on steam? lol. Yes, he has 6 pieces =p
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Yes, six pieces total, when I should have gotten eight.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Sorry. This flu is really screwing with my reading comprehension right now, haha. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Time to crack some skulls. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
You have no idea. I already emailed them.
I'm just worred that I'll have no hard proof that I didn't get four pieces in my first shipment. I'll see how they do. -
Are they any use to the ram?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Any copper is useful copper.
-
Attacking extra heatsinks is a good idea, but I think doing holes on the laptop is not worth it,without active fans to pump air in or out this alone is probably decreasing the temps on 1°C,maybe even less.Doing a test with only the extra heatsinks would be nice to see if it's worth drilling the laptop.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The full-on drilling I did on the backpanel is meant to emulate running the computer without the bottom panel attached without the danger of impact or extra dust.
-
So who is the best source for copper and good tape? (please provide links)
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Grab copper and a drill, now!
