Hey guys just a few questions about the health of my HDD's across my various machines.

Well long story short I was using the Active Hard Disk monitor on my netbook to check up on its HDD health (due to the clicking issue ive been having) to my surprise, with less then a days worth of work time, its health reads as 77% already

Now im thinking, well maybe I should check that against my other machines so I run the same tool on my G73 and custom built desktop form a few years ago.

Both G73 HDD's with about 20 days of work time are down to 56%

And my Desktop which has had the same HDD its whole life time, is at 91% with over 4months of work time...

Now I understand this is a netbook vs laptop vs desktop hdd so they are different sizes (physically) and have different tolerances, but my primary hdd on my g73 has already failed once (RMAed and got a new one, and its already down to 56%)

Should I be worried about my netbook or G73?

I'm no expert on this or notebooks, but after 3 months my 2nd HDD, a WD Black 500 Gb. died.

My WD Blacks on my PC, 1 TB and a 500 Gb, are 97% ok after 2 years.

The OS HDD - a Momentus XT - is 97% ok, but the Windows Index fell recently from 6.9 to 5.9.

Maybe it's too hot inside this machine?

Laptop HDs have less ventilation then desktops as mentioned by PFL's heat factor. Also do you turn your portable devices on and off more then your desktop? HDs are supposed to have auto parking heads that stop when no HD activity. I don't completely buy it as my HDS always make a good noise when they loose power. I also use HD active disk and I think the health life is calculated based on R/W, temp, drive online time etc.. Try a different program and you will get a different result. Another program is ActiveSmart which I used to use until I discovered active disk can network monitor other drives.

I forgot to mention defrag, scandisk, chkdsk are also good options to run regularly to maintain health

Hmmm im not sure, my hdds run pretty cool in my G73 (and only slightly warmer on average in my netbook), but yes they do run hotter then my desktop drive...

Yes I turn them off and on more often, I havent been using my desktop as much recently. My G73's HDDs dont make such noise, but my netbooks do, I think im going to go ahead and just assume thats a powersaving issue (as youve mentioned and as ive read in several places now) as every program/test/tool ive run on it says the HDD is ok.

I do run those frequently :) thanks again

And thanks both of you, guess I can rest a little easier...ima be getting some SSD's when they come down in price anyways :D

You eased my concerns a little as well! My Samsung HD was showing 58% health status as well. I am not a Samsung or Seagate HD fan as an FYI. Samsung HD is nothing but trouble IMHO
