I ordered my Asus G73SW on Xoticpc, and my order is on pending. They sent me an email about Intel found a defect of Sandy Bridge, there will be a 5% reduction in overall Sata(hard drive and optical drive) performance over the course of 3 years. They told me they still can ship out my laptop if want to because they told me " defect is small and most likely not noticeable ". Should I still get that laptop, or should I wait until May when new chips are out ? I can't wait to have a new laptop for now !!!

    i highly recommend to wait.

why would you willingly purchase a defective product?

You could always get it, then at the end of your warranty start complaining that it doesn't work right. Then get a brand new one at the end of 2 years :)

5% reduction? I think they have that wrong.

    To quote Anandtech
It is 5-15% probability that the ports will fail. And we are not talking about 5% reduction in performance, we are talking lots of performance loss until the ports stop functioning.

I would personally wait, considering that if you encountered issues in the future, the Asus RMA department is a nightmare to deal with. Between the 45 minutes waiting on the phone to speak to someone and the 4 weeks RMA process, it's just not worth setting yourself up for problems in the future :)

How would they know it's not noticeable, especially when you go to start your machine one day and it says there's no optical drive...

Reports say SATA 0-1 are unaffected, but then again, I wouldn't trust all the revealed info just yet. I would wait, or go with another model.
