This is just a question I've been wondering about.
Has anyone with the G73 updated their video drivers from ATI and NOT had GSOD issues without flashing the vbios or whatever?
I have a Best Buy Model and I've read some people here say they've updated their drivers, and everything runs better, but they don't say if they did the vbios flash or not.

I have the JH model which I got 6~ months ago and never touched the vbios and never had any GSOD's. Still using the same vbios but updated to the 11.3 drivers yesterday and no issues.
-
I am still on stock vbios and never had one gsod. I am using 11.4 right now.
-
got mine may last year... stock vbios.. 11.3 right now.. never had GSOD...

I look at flashing as something you only do if you are facing one of the confirmed issues with the laptop or that the settings it has cause you day to day issues when running the laptop (with the G73 there have been quite a few).
There may be only a very small chance of bricking your laptop/Card by flashing the BIOS but there is still that chance.
I have flashed the Vbios out of precaution of the GSOD and because mine is the A1 and does face these issues although I never have.
If its runs fine leave it be. -
There are two revisions of the card (well, many, but two big production runs). The first run doesn't need the vbios update, the second run/revision needs the vbios if you want to update the drivers.

I never got a GSOD ever but I still updated it anyway.

i have the BB version, never had GSOD
even when i update my vbios or my ati drive

my first G73 didn't have the GSOD issue, this one did(both BB models) , i just flashed the vbios , loaded up amd drivers and it was all good, on 11.3 now.

OK, let's settle this once and for all:
1) Whether one needs to flash or not is NOT determined by model brand. Best Buy models or otherwise.
2) There are 2 revisions of the video card, determined by the last 3 digits of the part number: C0x for 1st revision, C1x for 2nd, where x = some number
C0x cards have no GSOD issues, but run hotter.
C1x cards got the newer config of parts, run cooler, but have a timing issue with newer drivers that require the vBIOS update.
Both revisions can use the newer vBIOS if desired. -
I already benchmarked the differences at the official benchmark post, but in resume:
When my machine was Brand New I had Idle Temps around 58Cº and Load Temps of 90Cº
After 6 months of use my idle temps went up to 69Cº idle and 95Cº under benchmarks software.
Right after upgrading my Bios and vBios I got an instant result of -3Cº lower temps idle and around -5Cº to -6Cº lower for Benchmark software loads.
I was still a bit concern so I cleaned my computer with compressed air. And now my idle temps are around 60Cº again, Still gotta check my Load temps.
It might be a good option to update just as a preventive measure for high temperatures under hardcore gaming ^^. -
Upgrading to 213 would be good too to have the more proactive fan speeds.

i have C02 card and i had GSOD before updating the vbios and i think after that (but i am not sure , i think it happened only once)
-
but i never hand anything but sound card drivers go worng but that was a easy fix the same day great laptop i love it.

Got a G73 from BestBuy around last August. Updated BIOS and vBIOS as soon as they came out. I'm now at 11.3 mobility drivers, no issues with games. Mostly playing SC2 and Bioware RPGs. My temps are higher than most (65Cidle, 92C max load, average 80C) but I attribute that to living in a country where room temperature is 29C to 31C.

Actually, your temps are spot on for many. You can read up here ... http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu.../553173-g73jh-repaste-collective-summary.html
