Is "speakers" enabled as the Default Sound Device under Contol Panel:Sound?

    Is it muted?

Any recent Trauma to the notebook? Any software/driver updates?

Stupid questions, but we have to start with the basics.

the speakers work fine its when i plug my head phones in they don't work. the only thing i can think of i programed my gaming mouse wheel recently to control the volume. no trauma and i don't know about drivers because i am not familiar with drivers.
thanks for the reply and help. if you can think of something please let me know

i found the default and reset it and the head phones work now but when i plug it in i can still hear the external speakers real low. is this normal i mean its not a bother the head phones work fine but when i take them off i hear the external speakers. my old computer when the head phones were plugged in you could not hear the external speakers

That is weird, it is not supposed to work that way. Maybe someone else has an answer. I'm fresh out.

Sounds like you either have the default Microsoft generic High Definition Audio driver (which will turn the subwoofer into a separate audio device causing it to not be muted or act as the main speaker instead which explains why you still hear something w/ headphones plugged in).

What Chastity said. To confirm you got the driver installed properly, go into Control Panel -> Device Manager and under Sound Devices if you see "Realtek High-Definition Audio" then its properly installed. Another way to check is to check playback devices by right clicking the volume icon in the taskbar and clicking "Playback Devices" if you only see one "Speakers" then it is right. If you see two you're using Microsoft Generic.
