Didn't see an introduction thread so I apologize if this is the wrong sectionJust wanted to say hello, new to the forum, new to gaming laptops but I'm a new proud owner of Asus G73JW. Did mostly console gaming but got bored of not being able to upgrade hardware. Hoping you guys can teach me a few things about these beasts.

Welcome to the G series Forum!

Indeed, welcome. Firstly goto store.steampowered.com and install steam. Every thanksgiving, Xmas, and summer there are massive sales on computer games which should drain your bank account, and build a massive game library rather quickly! Personally, I try to only buy the games I REALLY want at full price, and pickup the others on sale during those times
(I'm up to over 100 games in roughly 2 sale seasons).
Additionally, you may want to goto user CP, and add a little sig including you version's model number of your G74, which generally aids in trouble kith and issues that may crop up. If you don't know the model number, it should be on the Asus site when you register your warranty on the support side (if you haven't aleady). I recommend doing this ASAP incase you encounter any warranty items. Additionally, there are certain models of the Asus line that should be considered a bit lesser in the gfx card department, so you may want to see which one you have. If you post your model number here, I'm sure someone with better knowledge of the G74 lineup would be more than willing to let you know which version you have, or you could tell us where you bought it at, as the lesser models generally originate from Bestbuy. Don't worry too much, if this is the case, as there are a few options if this is the case, but they may be time-sensitive for some of them. Either way, it should be a pretty powerful gaming laptop, and I hope you are enjoying it to date -
NGRAY951 This thread will be helpful if you need drivers or 2nd opinions (the best advice will be from this forum of course).
G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference
I would D/L the windows 7 DVD and the driver disk if your machine did not come with either.
I would also recommend doing a full backup/image to an external hard drive for easy recovery if needed. The ASUS tool (no pun) has been problematic for some. -
Which gaming laptop did you get? Oh, and welcome to TeamROG

Here's the specs that it has -ASUS G73JW-17.3-Inch-1920x1080-
-Intel i7-740QM -1.73GHz Quad-Core
-16GB DDR3 1333MHz (4 SODIMM Sockets)
-Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics with 1.5GB GDDR5
-1TB Hybrid HDD/SSD (2x 500G 7200RPM/4GB SSD)
And thank you for all the welcomes and tips, I'll definitely install steam, before I was using a dv4-2153cl, that's a bit of a jump in hardware lol, so I have a lot to figure out.
Also Am I blind because I don't see the signature in the user cp section. -
Two good freebies you can DL from Steam: Alien Swarm and Team Fortress 2.
Another free game that Dallers loves: World of Tanks (I'm actually downloading it now to see what all the fuss is about). -
there may be a minimum post limit for signatures, but thats one of the good model 460m cards... some have 1gig vram which means a gimped card, but you dont have to worry about that
The steam sales are awesome, the daily deals and weekend deals are meh most of the time, but the big holiday sales are where its at... so save up some money, stash it in your steam wallet, and buy away when its time -
Well its good to here I made the right choice on the video card because I almost bought another that had 1GB of video memory and 8GB of ram, $200 extra well spent. I'm curious, I had someone explain the Hybrid drive to me, but the 4GB SSD, is that basically used as cache and also is it a 4GB SSD drive built into each hard drive or is 1 that is used by both?

Each momentus drive has 4gigs of flash. It automatically pre-loads 4gigs of the most commonly accessed data and keeps it in the Flash memory for faster loads. Ex. If you shutdown/reload alot, after the 3rd reload, alot of the blocks of data that contains your windows install is preloaded into the flash.

Makes sense thank you bluefalcon

So I found out after transferring some movies from my external to the laptop that I have only 1 500gb hard drive. I popped the back cover off and there it was a blank space where the other should be but isn't, what a bummer.
