sup guys. I need some serious help. I was watching some anime on my laptop when all of a sudden, my screen went blue and I saw an error message. Then it restarted on its own and said something like use boot cd or something (can't remember exactly). So I press the power button and turn it off and then on. I hit start windows normally and now it won't go pass the starting windows screen.

What should I do? I'm not sure what the cause is. Its not temps cause I always monitor that, creative? I did have bass boost on but this has never happened before. How can I get windows to start?

also, windows start up repair won't go past the screen with the loading bar on it.

Something probably got messed up if you got a BSOD. Sh** happens... Seams like youll have to format and reinstall the OS. You could try the repair console, but that useless thing never worked for me. Or try rolling back in safe mode if you have system restore turned on...

Repair isn't working for me either. I did try safe mode but it seems to lock up while its loading..... I'll try a few more times and do a system restore. the last thing I want to do is reinstall the os.

    damn it.....

Sounds like either the OS or the drive got corrupted... hope you made backups :(

Are you saying that you are getting stuck at the loading screen when booting from the Windows Repair partition? That's the small 200MB one. If so, then that is definitely a bad sign. Hopefully you can run a system restore from saved images on an external drive.

If you can get the system restore partition to boot up, then all is well. I have often used the Windows Recovery Console to fix the Master boot record. Just logon to the Windows directory and type "fixmbr."

But I would first try and restore from saved images if you can get the system restore partition to boot up.

    Agreed.

If you can't even get the OS up in safe mode than there's not many (any?) repair options..

I made a back up with norton but not sure what it backed up. If i reinstall windows, will all my files be in tact? like all my homework files and photoshop files etc?

    edit

I get stuck at both the windows start up and the windows repair (when I tap f8 and hit repair windows). unless its suppose to take forever to repair? the bar just kept moving and nothing happened.

what the heck caused this anyway? I can't have this happening at random.

Your files are probably still fine. Something is fubared in the boot record. Can you boot up with the Windows CD? If so you might be able to view and off load any files (that aren't already saved in Norton.) BTW, what are Norton backups? Are they image files of your system?

Mine didn't come with a windows cd. What about f3? isn't that sorta the same thing?

also, I'm not sure what norton's backups are. I think its an image since the norton drive is in the "my computer" location right under the c drive... sigh, lesson learned, always make back ups on external hardrives.

Can you get the F3 to work? If so, can you select F8? If so, try Repair your computer. The loading bar should go all the way across you screen, then without too much delay you should get the Windows loading splash screen, then after that system recovery options. I have an SSD, so everything goes really fast, but on a normal hdd, it could take somewhat longer. If your system hangs, how far do you get?

well, I got to the f3 menu but didn't do anything yet. I tried repair my computer and it ran for at least 15 minutes before I shut it down.

    edit

man... I don't even know what an MBR is.

edit - is there some way I can system restore without windows starting up?

    Master Boot Record.

You'd be able to recover the MBR among other things with paragon FE, so surely norton has some similar function, I just can't direct you how to use it :p

Can you boot into dos? Assuming you can since you tried selecting safe mode already, once in dos type in

    chkdsk c: /f

This will give you an idea of what's wrong, if chkdsk fails the whole drive might be screwed, but it just sounds like a windows error now.

OK, how far does repair my computer get before you shut down? Does it just keep "loading" with the bars on the bottom of the screen? Do you get to the next Windows splash screen? Do you get past that?

If it doesn't stop loading (first one) then that is a real problem. There is no "DOS" mode in Window 7, just the recovery console. But you don't seem able to get that far.

Now you have to look into booting the thing from either another CD or flash disk. You can use a live linux CD. Then you could rescue your homework and other files. But it looks like you will have to re-install Windows 7.

I wonder if you could download the Windows 7 ISO, put it on a CD, and boot up that way?

yea, it just keeps saying loading. Well wait, it doesn't exactly say loading, thats just what it does. the bars constantly move and nothing happens for 15-20 minutes so I absolutly have no way if getting the recovery to work.

I can easily dl windows 7 64 bit home and use my license. I'm not sure if its against the forum rules or not, but can anyone pm me a safe link to dl windows 7 with nothing tampered with it? a real version, genuine?

3rd sig has a Win7 Install DVD iso (2 part rar) It's a universal iso, so you just select what version of Win 7 you want. Use your laptop key to activate.

Ok, I patched the iso then burned it on a disk. Now what? shouldn't it normally start once I start up my laptop?

edit - nvm, I think i found it.

**opps so did not mean to post 3 times. sry***

hmm, I'm following method 1 and 2 but every time I reboot, it won't run the disk. It keeps going to the repair screen.

before this, what I did was patch the iso, then moved the iso from my ex drive to my c drive cause I have a short in my wire. burned it to my disk, then I followed that guide but..... I can't get it to run.

edit- I'm also not seeing p0 at all. just p1 and p4. I put p1 on the top, hit f10 to save. that didn't work. then I put p4 on top this time and still the same thing.

edit - I'm a noob. just found out that I burned the image wrong.

edit - I got it to work. I just let hit repair and let it sit for like two hours then it got started to fix everything up. thanks for everyones help.
