Ok, I'm definitely no techie, so any obvious solution escapes me, as I've never had this problem before.

A week ago I noticed there was an optional update in my Windows Update, called "Broadcom - Bus Controllers and Ports BT-270", which i installed thinking it can't hurt. Well, turns out it can - the bluetooth icon, which is supposed to always be visible in the lower right taskbar, disappears at random. When it's gone I can't even run bluetooth manually from the start menu. When I click on it, it does nothing. I have to restart windows, which brings the bluetooth icon back on and working perfectly. But then if I'm not using bluetooth and leave the computer idle for a while, it disappears again.

Also some other stuff I've noticed: When I wake the laptop from sleep the icon's gone, but then I leave it idle for like 10 min and it goes to sleep again and when I wake it, the icon's there! It's set to sleep in 1 hour of idling, so that's weird.

Anyone had this update installed before?

I didn't get that update offered, nor did I ever had this issue. Try to download the current bluetooth driver from the Asus website and install that one again. I hope that helps.

That's odd. Wonder which notebook you have, G73 doesn't have a broadcom bluetooth driver. Sounds like easy solution to me, install the CORRECT drivers and software package...

It's a G73JH-A1 from Amazon. Stock Win7. I don't think it has anything by Broadcom on it either. Except maybe those Nokia programs (PC Suite, Ovi) I installed a few weeks ago. I connect my Nokia phone via bluetooth, maybe they use some Broadcom driver. But I only started having problems after the Broadcom update.
When I right click to Bluetooth's Properties and then Previous Versions, it says there are no previous versions available.
I don't find Bluetooth anywhere in the Device Manager, isn't it supposed to be there?
The update doesn't show on the Updates Uninstaller accessed from the Control Panel. It is visible in the Update History, but i can't uninstall anything there. I can, however, click for details and it says the update is from July 2009. And that "More Information" URL doesn't exist anymore. Hmmm....

@ziddy, ok I can try to install the correct drivers and software package over the Broadcom ones, but I don't know what they are and where to get them... =]

My bluetooth adapter shows as a BT-270 and the stock Broadcom drivers from the ASUS G73JH page (and the driver utility disk) work fine here.

You may also need to have the wireless console utility installed before installing the BT driver but I can't verify that.

If you do system restore, that will revert to previous drivers. Ehe?

ziddy, the G73JH has a BT-270 module configured from the factory. Check the device manager under Bluetooth Radios.

    Wrong, yet again. :(

And, yes, I have the same and ge the same update available.

ziddy, if you reinstalled from scratch, then you didn't install the drivers and that is why it does not show up for you. Please stop trying to give advice when you don't know what you are talking about. You are wrong more than you are right on here.

Looks like we might have the webcam and BB LCD display issue where they just put whatever part they could get at the time of manufacture. Makes troubleshooting within the same model very annoying.

    Cheers,

lol. Not nearly as tough as troubleshooting a DELL where they use 10 different kinds of wifi, lan,bt,chipset, etc drivers. talk about annoying.

    Ya think? lol.

Usually I just go for the network drivers (whichever list is shorter, and you can kinda eyeball if its going to have a high end card or not). Once you do that windows update has usually 75% of the other drivers once you get them online.

Still a pita for some of those old ones. Man I dislike Dell.
