As the title reads, my g73 is starting to overheat and make a terrible noise after not even 30 mins of gameplay. i just got dragon age origins and run with full settings and the noise it makes is worrying me. So i was wondering if i should clean the fan with the airbrush or if there is a problem i should be worried about.

Noise could be from any number of sources...most likely culprit would be a fan giving up the ghost and causing the overheating. Are you getting strange video symptoms...is the system shutting off?
If it were me, I definitely wouldn't push the system until I knew definitely what the problem is... -
Its not performing any slower than the day i bought it but the noise it makes and the heat that emanates from the keyboard is scaring me. Its when im usually playing dragon age: origins, i have it up to max settings is this game known to be brutal for computers to run on max settings?

If you're video card is overheating, you should have artifacts or some indication of video corruption and/or lockups. If you're CPU is causing problems due to a failing fan (if that is the source of the noise you're hearing)...then the system should shutdown due to the heat.
Dragon Age is not bleeding edge anymore...running max is reasonably taxing...I've not heard of it causing system problems. And, heat from the keyboard is not something I've experienced... -
Can you isolate where in the system the sound's coming from? Like Holliday suggested, maybe one of the fans are going out?
-
Yeah its definetly the fans i think, the noise is generating a lot from the rear of the computer and both vents feel and sound like they have fire coming out of it.
Umm, i can t see that much difference performance-wise though, sometimes it starts lagging if i play for too long but nothing very noticeable, it usually fixes itsefl quickly. Also i was wondering if having a fan (house fan) around and rotating near the computer is bad, cuz i usually have it next me when im playing and its hot where i live. and sometimes i play for hours so wondering if my house fan couldve attracted a lot of dust in there.
Any chance i might be overeacting? cuz im pretty sure it never used it sound like that until about a week ago when i restored it to factory settings. But it definetly gets really hot from both ends of the vents and it starts to make a lot of noise but the computer is fine and I havent really experienced any problems thus far. Once it did black out but I think that was because it reached like 110 degrees farenheit and at that point i just shut the computer down. Since then no problems and no errors whatsoever. -
I don't have a G73 (still saving up my pennies
) but from what I've been reading, it's supposed to run fairly silent. It could be dust build up. Have you tried cleaning the vents?
-
Download GPU-z or HWMONITOR and see what your temps are.
-
how should i try to clean it? because i have compressed air and just dont know where to point it at lol, this labtops design is like stealthjetlol so
downloaded hwmonitor what temps should i post? every temp exceeds 100degrees farenheit except for assembly and airflow which are 98*F each -
That's high. Sounds like you need a repaste. I've heard that if you blow air into the vents you can cause the fans to spin backwards and damage the computer.Head down to your local Radio Shack and pick up some Arctic Silver 5 and follow this thread.
Best of luck. -
100 for both CPU and GPU are way too high. You NEED to RMA or repaste.

Cheers, -
Guess I missed that lol.
-
like the intel i 7 all 4 slots temperatures stay about 140~degrees farenheit. edit i guess its alright then if its in the 140farenheit range
plus will let you know if it rises from an application or something. cuz thats just the temp when i start up the comp but i know it gets much hotter after 30 mins or so -
One thing you might try is taking a can of air and blowing out the vents in the back. You will be surprised at how much stuff you will get out when you do.
I try to do this every few days as if you do not you will get build up on your fans and in the heat sink fins, and if you are in a humid area it will get this way faster.
Sense I have been doing this my computer stays cool and works great.
The sound you talked about sounds like fans that have dirt build up on them and they are getting out of balance, when you start hearing this on boot up and then it goes away is when you need to blow out the system. -
Cheers, -
just a quick update its the comps average temp while idle is like 100-120*F and when running dragon age it gets to 140*F~. There is also a clicking noise when the computer starts, I dont know if someone said that might indicate something but just noticed it to today when I started my computer
-
I do this every few days , and I do not have to worry about the fans getting dirty as much. Also if you live in a house or an area where it is humid then the blades will grit up fast and it is hard to get off when this stuff bakes on as I call it.
It takes very little air to do this when you do and in doing so your computer will run cooler and the fans will last a lot longer. Most of the fans that are used in the notebooks and desktop computers will not last long at all if they are unbalanced as the bearings will fail quickly.
You may already know this so disregard the instructions if you do. I put this down so the ones who do not know will read and learn. -
cleaned out the vents now, computer is definetly getting cooler, all temps seem normal and the computer retains its cool, however its still making excessive fan noises and the little click when the comp starts up. I think this is because I couldnt clean the left side of the vent because the dustbunnies do not come out of the access panel, should I just take into the shop now? cheers

This will make the fan fail in time.
And there is no way to know how long or when it will fail. I have had fans last quite awhile that way . And I have had fans fail in just a few weeks.
So I look at it this way, I try to get it fixed because it could fail when you need the computer most.
Also if take it in make sure they put the right type of fan back on. When they changed the fan for my video processor they used a fan that does not have the RPM lead and now I can not tell what the fan RPM is. I am going to have to take it back in and have the fan replaced with the correct one. -
got my first gsod today wondering what that bodes, ive read thats its the ati video card that makes this so but wondering if my problems could have also causd this, also noticed that the gpu is getting way too hot as its maxed temped at 84*C(CELSIUSLOL) and stays around 63-71*C while playing a game is that too hot?
-
I get about the same, maybe a little less but my heatsinks where re pasted . But even with that most games give me the temps that you are showing.
When your temps get up to and over 100 c then it is time to look at why.
Also some games will make the video card hotter than others as they use and push the card harder.
