I recently purchased a asus g50vt-x5 from cowboom.com which has a 9800m gt and I upped the proc to the one that comes in the x1 and I added Artic silver 5 to the cpu and chipset and I noticed while playing l4d that it was blowing out hot air... really hot air so i opened coretemp and the processor was cool as a cucumber... then I ran furmark and the gpu temp rose rapidly to 106 degrees celsius  so I immediately flashed the vbios to 1.00v and windows wouldnt take it(bsod). I then purchased a spare bottom plate and cut a hole where the fake subwoofer/fan vent thingie was... it still cooked! I am at my wits end here  Is it safe to apply thermal compound to the gpu? would that be my next step? Please help!

Yes, your GPU should have some thermal paste on it.

When you apply the paste, put the heatsink on and take it back off to check that the paste spread well and that there is no gap.

    Then repaste again..

Did you use a chemical to clean the old residue off and a primer to make sure it bonds good?

Ok I cleaned the surfaces and added thermal compound and it got to 101 i furmark... any other ideas?

    make that 104

Help? what is my next step? cooling pad? I also tried a diff card from an x1 that never got hot and it gets hot...

Is your fan working properly? Is the temperature sensor working properly?

There might be a gap between the gpu and the heatsink, in which case you'll need a piece of copper inbetween for proper interface. I'm not sure this is the case though, just an idea. Also, I'd try MX-3 or IC Diamond, Arctic Silver is a bit old and outdated (the other 2 will give 2-3C lower). They also have no cure time compared to Arctic Silver.

Is the heatpipe bent or dented?

BTW did you check the fan as toyota_scion_tc said?

Im seriously at my wits end here! I dont know what to do... OH i almost forgot I removed the metal plate on my fan because it made a nasty grinding noise did that do it?

*DOH* *facepalm* ok here's what happened... the black rubber adhesive that holds the heatsinks together was between them instead of on top restricting airflow... now my max is 75...thanks!
