Hi all, I'm having problems with my G60Jx that I bought about a month ago. Let me explain the problem and the steps I've taken thus far to try to resolve them...

Ok, so the laptop completely shuts down (with 0 warning or no BSOD) whenever I play any kind of games. It doesn't always happen, and sometimes it can take hours for it to happen or it can happen within a few minutes. I have updated my BIOS to 206, upgraded to the latest nVidia graphic drivers and uninstalled the Realtek audio driver. It is becoming extremely frustrating and I'm not sure what to do about this.

Here is the weird part about this problem. I live in a dorm and my roommate and I bought the same exact computer. He also has a G60Jx and his computer is doing the same exact thing mine is. We live in a relatively dust-free environment, the room is well ventilated and we both have laptop cooling pads. The computers are not even that old so I find it hard to believe that it could be dust or overheating causing the issue, but nonetheless, I have dusted the computers out.

One more weird thing... my roommate and I used to not live in the room we live in now. We lived in different rooms. I never had the problem I am having now in my old room, but he had the same problem we are having now in his old room. I worked on it for several hours trying different things suggested on these forums to no avail (bios update, graphics update, audio uninstall, etc). We unplugged the surge protector the laptop is plugged into, into a different wall outlet in the room and the problem totally went away.

So, this is my next step (but I'm looking for any advice, tips, please help!): I'm going to buy a battery backup and replace the surge protector with it. Maybe when the laptop uses more processing power (playing games) it pulls more power from the wall outlet? The building we live in is pretty old so could we be having these issues because of something related to the power? I think maybe a battery backup would help stabilize the power, but my question is why does the battery in the laptop not accomplish that mission for me already if this is the problem??

Again, any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

I don't think it's the wall outlet issue since if it lost power from the AC adapter the laptop will switch to battery power, therefore, the battery backup is not necessary.

Most of the time the laptop will shut itself down is the CPU overheating to prevent damage to the CPU and MB, try check your CPU temperature.

Ok, I downloaded a program called Real Temp and am going to see what kind of temperatures I get while playing the games that cause my computer to turn off. Is there a better temp program that anyone recommends?

If this problem is being caused by heat issues, how would I go about fixing this? I'm not even playing these games on the max settings.... I'm averaging about 60 fps in the games (Global Agenda is the one I'm referring to atm). I would be extremely disappointed in this product if I'm just SOL and have to deal with the overheating issues.

Ok, I played one game through and did not crash this time, but this is what the temp monitor read throughout the game (lasted about 30 minutes):

CPU: Max temp 63 degrees C with max load of 33%
GPU: Max temp 85 degrees C

Those numbers seem pretty high to me, especially the GPU one....

Sorry, I really hate bumping my own thread, but I really need some help with this issue... I find it odd that both my roommate and I with the same exact computer are having the same problem with them turning off.

Is my best bet to ship it off to ASUS? I've dusted everything out but the computer is barely a month old and its been doing it since day one!

I got the same computer today. I constantly get BSOD, so I don't think dust or power is an issue. It seems to me that the GPU overheats extremely fast, as any intensive graphic usage will immediately make my computer freeze. I am planning to return my computer, if you can you should do the same, as this seems like a major hardware problem.

Did anyone ever solve this issue? I have been surfing the web for a while now, my g60jx will crash randomly while playing a game connected to the monitor after about 10 min. My laptop gets smoking hot while gaming, but it doesn'y change at all with a monitor connected, all my nVidia drivers are up to date, don't know what else to do, but everytime I connect HDMI or D-SUB bam I go down.

Install latest bios, 208 , all g60 and g50 when connected to an external monitor with the lid closed will shutdown after some minutes of game play , and no one has ever solved the issue , just don't close it .

Never had to update my Bios before, but from what I've read it sounds like this could end badly. Should I really take my laptop to Best Buy? Those guys are complete idiots who just run their CD and I don't trust em too much when it comes to fixing things (they trashed my old laptop when "repairing it").

I know this is an ancient thread, but I just have to point out that my G60JX was overheating terribly. I pulled it apart and repasted the GPU and CPU.

The stock thermal paste job done on the GPU was atrocious. It was barely covering half the chip. I was dropping down to 12-15 FPS playing BF3, after repasting with Arctic Silver, I'm easily getting 50-60FPS+.

temps before repasting: 105-120C (totally ridiculous) during gameplay
temps after repasting: 70-90 (MUCH better) during gameplay

I've heard about guys doing things to their JX's like cutting the control voltage wire on the fan so it always runs full RPM's but TRUST ME, its the Thermal Paste.

Just a warning, the stock thermal paste is like concrete, you will have to reef or pry the heatsink pipes off of the cpu and gpu, its will not just easily pop off.

To the op temps of 65 would be an improvement for me.
