Can anyone provide me with an idiots guide to updating bios on soon to arrive g53jw? I read the guide and it advises using easy flash and updating the bios from a usb drive. I have never had to update a bios from a usb drive before - do I just copy the bios on the usb drive after formatting the usb drive? Does the drive have to be bootable? How do I make it bootable? Thanks.

P.S. Is there any particular type of usb drive I should use - I believe the latest bios adds support for usb 3 - does that mean a usb3 drive won't work?

    Hi, there's a guide here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/174395-bios-update-guide-asus-notebooks.html

You basically just unzip the BIOS file onto a freshly FAT-formatted USB stick and reboot the computer. When it starts up immediately hit F2 to get into the BIOS setup. Then navigate with the arrow keys to Easy Flash and point it to the file on your USB stick.

I'm actually not sure if USB3 sticks work. Either way the stick doesn't need to be bootable.

Thanks a lot - I will get hold of an non-usb3 stick, just to be on the safe side and format it using FAT. Just one last question: to format using FAT, do you just right click on the usb key drive?

Yes you should be able to right click on the drive and select Format, and then in the drop-down select FAT. To be extra safe, don't do a quick format, do a normal format.

Just for reference sake, people shouldn't try updating BIOS with USB 3.0. It's still unstable and no one knows what can happen when you update from the 3.0 port. You can however plug a USB 3.0 Thumb Drive into a USB 2.0 port and it should work fine. This is just a heads up for anyone else in case someone updates with the 3.0 port again and brick.

Like the above post said "Never Update Your BIOS using USB 3.0 Port"

Some guys cooked their system by doing it using 3.0 port.

I just bought a usb key drive - but it does not specify what version usb it is. Anyway, as long as I plug it in the usb 2 port, I should be o.k. - right?

If it doesn't say USB3 in gigantic uppercase, blinking neon lights, it's probably USB 2. Vendors are a bit over the top with advertising USB3 gear on the packaging.

Even though most USB 3.0 Thumb drives barely top the USB 2.0 specifications (lol)
