Sadly I'm having the exact same problem as the OP. I'm now using the default Windows driver, which doesn't cause the crackle but also doesn't work with the subwoofer and misdirects audio when using headphones. I'll wait until the summer to RMA it - I can live with the crappy audio for now, can't live without the computer. :(

By the way, how long does the RMA process usually take? And does Asus pay for the shipping?

Sorry to hear that you also have the crackling issue. As you have undoubtedly found by reading the crackling threads, there some debate as to whether the issue can be fixed.

When I was having constant lockups due to the Creative software, I called ASUS. They were going to pay for the shipping both ways. As to how long it would have taken, that I don't know. I would say plan on it taking a month, probably longer. Expect the worse, hope for the best. Good luck.

I got my Asus G73 today (from best buy) and it has the same "Ease of Access - lock up" issue.

Alternatively, you can force a lock up by pressing shift 5 times to bring up sticky keys and as soon as u mouse over that window to enter "Ease of Access"... You're all done.

I uninstalled the Creative Media 5 stuff and also the soundblaster audio w/e, but not the realtek drivers.

I read all the pages here, but i'm still confused about wether this issue with the lock up has been resolved. I would greatly appreciate any help with this as it's really annoying when playing games that require you to press shift multiple times.....

As you found out, pressing the SHIFT key multiple times activates Windows Sticky keys. When started, there is a beep and with Sound Blaster Audigy HD installed, that's what took your system down. To my knowledge, the solution remains uninstalling Sound Blaster Audigy HD to prevent the lockup.

As to disabling Sticky keys, do the following:

    1. Go to Control Panel -> Ease of Access Center.
    2. Click the "Make the keyboard easier to use" link.
    3. Go to "Make it easier to type" -> "Turn on Sticky Keys" -> "Setup Sticky Keys" link.
    4. Remove check mark from "Turn on Sticky Keys when SHIFT is pressed five times" and press "Ok".

While you're in the Ease of Access Center, you might want to look around for other setting to disable.

Thanks, Kalim. That took care of sticky keys, but the issue continues. I can still force a lock up by doing the following:

    1. Go to Control Panel - > Ease of Access.
    2. In here you see the options:

    Ease of Access Center

    Speech Recognition

    3. Click Ease of Access Center and it locks up my pc, but not when I click Speech Recognition.

    Any ideas about this?

    Edit:

As for the sound issue with the cracking, I haven't experienced this yet. I only uninstalled Creative and Sound Blaster because I thought it was the fix for my problem which it didn't seem to be. Of course, I have restarted // shut down my computer in hopes that it has been cured, but to no avail.

Ah, I see where you are going. I don't use "Category" sorting in Control Panel, I use "Large icons". Not that this would necessarily have anything to do with lockups, only how you arrive at the Ease of Access Center.

That's really strange for two reasons. One, in order to disable Sticky Keys you had to go into Ease of Access Center. Which, based on what you said, should have crashed your computer before you were able to disable it.

Second, every post that I have read with regards to Ease of Access Center crashing has been fixed by removing the Creative software from Programs and Features. Having it still crash without Creative installed is a new one on me.

Can you double check that you indeed have Sound Blaster Audigy HD uninstalled?

    Verified.

It no longer appears in Control Panel - > Remove Programs.

But to ensure it wasn't on there I also checked Device Manager.

    http://img15.imageshack.us/i/76599944.png/

I didn't actually click "Ease of Access Center" to disable sticky keys. That process went like this:

    1. Control Panel -> Ease of Access.

    http://img638.imageshack.us/i/18384272.png/

    2. From here it does allow me to click "Change how your keyboard works" and of course that will bring you to the sticky / toggle key settings.

But if I were to click "Ease of Access Center" then it freezes up like a raspberry smoothy and on ocassion, the laptop (unsure which component), will make an "ERRRRR" sound. From that point on, all you can do is a hard shut down and when I come back on I get the message to start windows normally or enter safe mode ect. No BSOD's at this point.

    Edit:

Img appeared broken to me (red X) so changed it to just the URL.

    Edit: (TEST)

I switched the display type within control panel from category to large // small icons.

From here, I can click "Ease of Access Center" without a lock up.

But while in category view it still locks up by method listed above, I think people should try doing what I have to see if their G73's lock up as well. Although I can choose to view small or large icons instead, I'm still intrigued by this unique lock up and would like to see some kind of resolution.

Another issue that I am now having is that the fn+F9 hotkey (disable touchpad) is not working. The other factory hotkeys are working such as fn+F10 mutes the volume, ect.

I went through all kinds of mouse settings and can't figure out how to turn that back on. I use a wireless mouse and I can disable the touchpad, but not with the hotkey. It used to work. Have anything to do with uninstalling Creative 5? :S

The issue you are describing should have nothing to do with having Creative Media 5 uninstalled.

When you press Fn+F9 twice is there an on screen graphic displayed showing the Touchpad toggling on and off?

Here when I press Fn+F9 I see the graphic, but the TouchPad continues to be disabled because I have a USB mouse attached and I have "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached" check marked in Mouse Properties. The presumption here is, that at detected wireless pointing device would work the same as a USB pointing device and disable the Touchpad.

If this is indeed the case, disable your wireless mouse and try Fn+F9 again, and see if it now works.

Actually, I solved that issue. I somehow uninstalled the synaptics mouse drivers or something like that. I simply restored my pc to a time before i make that booboo.

But now every time i restart my pc or power it on from a shut down, it displays this message after boot that says: "Volume Control" or something on the top of the box and then on the left there's an "!" inside a yellow triangle. And there's no other text within the window.

I simply "X" out of it and it doesn't seem to effect anything, but know of anything I could do to stop it from displaying this message?

What I meant by that was, when I do fn+F9 it did nothing at all. Didn't even display the graphic. (which is how I knew I was unable to disable the touchpad via hotkey) but like I said, it's all good now as far as that goes.

Sorry for the double... triple post x.x

    @ Dandush -

I actually have installed that Driver, however I'm not sure what GSOD is. Oh... I guess it's like BSOD only grey right? I've never had either yet. "knock on wood" Can you force your G73 to GSOD on you? I'll try it and see what happens for me. Right now I have this other issue with viewing "Easy Access Center" while control panel is set to "Category" mode.

Control Panel -> (make sure it's set to "Category") Ease of Access -> Ease of Access Center -> LOCK-UP. No ctrl+alt+del. No moving the mouse. No response whatsoever.

However, if I go to "EAC" via Control Panel -> (Viewing small // large icons) -> Easy Access Center. No problem at all.

    hi tjohnson20xx!

You guessed right regarding the definition of the GSOD.
This happens to me randomly. I'm not really a hard gamer, so it never happened to me while playing. However I got the GSOD several times while watching a BR movie or even while listening to some music.
I don't want to uninstall the Realtek HD driver (which fixes the GSOD issue) as I mainly use my laptop for video editing, movies and I like to develop while listening music....
I'll install tonight the 10.4a version (I'm doubtful it will help somehow) and will let you know.
Except by activating the EAC, you've never experienced any GSOD?

The only grey screens I've seen were on windows 3.1 lol

As for this beast, (it really is a beast, even the best buy knock off) I haven't had any GSOD or BSOD issues, but I also do not have a blue ray player. I have the standard DVD burner majig. :p But, I myself AM a hardcore gamer. I don't overclock or nothing crazy, but I've been playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Devil May Cry 4 and World of Warcraft all on the MAX settings with no issues at all.

I don't have fraps so I can only tell you that during the DMC4 performance test I was getting 412FPS before I maxed the settings and then for some reason, this computer (or the game, not sure) caps the FPS at 60. Has anyone noticed this? When playing WoW on ULTRA settings, it also caps at 60-61.

But of those 3 games that I have, none of them lag at all save for WoW when my latency is through the roof because it's downloading 5,000 patches every time I turn around, but I digress.

You said you watch BR movies so assuming you got your G73JH at Best Buy, you have the RBBX09 model. (I have the cheaper RBBX05. 6GB of RAM and no BR player. pretty sure that's the only difference. However, to my surprise this has 1333MHz RAM instead of 1066. I heard it's random from the distributor and they just throw in what they have.)

But I've run this thing for a week straight probably, only turning it off to take it somewhere and the whole time it's on I'm usually gaming. I haven't had any issues with GSODS yet so I don't understand how watching a movie would do that to you.

I have a few DVD's so I'll throw one in after this post and see what happens. I'm not sure what else to do for you right now. I never uninstalled the Realtek drivers either, only the creative 5 ones and I don't even know why I did THAT. Mine has an -issue- all together different than everyone else who posted.

I just don't try to access "Easy Access Control" through control panel while in category mode any more. I know it locks up, so I avoid doing that. My new issue is still that I have this annoying window that pops up after boot that says "Volume Panel" and has an "!" inside a yellow triangle. There's no text written in this window, only the label on top of it and the triangle on the left.

It occurred after I restored my pc to before I deleted the creative 5 drivers. I had to restore it because my touchpad hotkey (fn+F9) wasn't responding at all. No onscreen graphic or physical functionality was present because somehow, I managed to uninstall the synaptics (sp?) drivers.

Anyone know how I would get rid of that annoying box? And is this post too F'ing long? haha

    ::EDIT::

The screen doesn't actually turn grey. It just freezes. A BSOD is when the screen goes blue and says basically you're computer is malfunctioning so I'm under the impression that in the event of a GSOD the screen would go grey and give some sort of error message correct? When I access "EAC" via the route described above, my computer freezes up like a raspberry smoothy. The screen stays where it is and so does everything else. The mouse doesn't move, you can't press any keys to try and resolve this issue. It's just done.

I've also experienced this type of lock up one time before, but I didn't mention it because I can't necessarily blame the "rig", but here's what happened. When I first try to install World of Warcraft, I had my buddy's copy of the game. I put the CD in and it would lock up as soon as I told it to "run". I tried this four times in a row, same outcome every attempt.

I then went and downloaded the trial and it runs fine but it also doesn't utilize the disc drive. I have installed Bad Company 2 and Devil May Cry 4 (it takes a looooooooooooooong...... Long f'ing time to download either of them and that may be the pc's fault, i'm not sure.) BC2 doesn't require the disc to play which is cool. But DMC4 does however, but it hasn't locked up on me yet. But like I said, I'm going to throw a movie in now and call it a night. We'll see if anything changes for you tomorrow.

Oh yes. And the Best Buy model's max res is 1600 x 900 instead of 1920 x 1080. I knew this before I bought mine as it isn't much of a downer for me. Actually, if this thing supported FHD, games and everything would be more demanding and if I had to turn my game settings down even just a tick I'd probably lose my freakin' mind. :)

As for the movie, I watched "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (classic) and It never froze on me. I then put the computer in sleep mode and went to bed as it was what... 2AM probably by the time the movie got over? x.X My eyes feel like 2 burnt holes in a sheet.

    hi tjohnson20xx,

Thanks for your great report and for your patience!
I'll install the 10.4 right after the next time it will crash. :)
I noticed that the 10.5 beta version is already available (things are going fast) and some G73 holders installed the 8.74 driver (not Catalyst) and this seem to have fixed their GSOD issues (see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=461828&page=404).

Should there be an on screen graphic display when toggling the touchpad on and off? As far as I know, it just disables it without showing any graphics. The taskbar will just show a red X on the touchpad icon when disabling it.

Sorry, I don't know what specifically could be causing that issue. Obviously it has to do with audio in some capacity, likely Creative Volume Panel.

Looking around, what happens when you do the following:

Start -> Run and type "VolPanlu" (without quotes)

Yes. If you don't see the on-screen graphic, then it's likely you don't have the ATK Package (fully) installed.

Again. I have fixed the issues with the touchpad. I somehow uninstalled the ATK package (or part thereof) like you mentioned, but I system restored back to before I did that.

And now it has the other issue. I typed Volpanlu in the search. It found a file named volpanlu and you're right, it looks like a creative 5 thing. I clicked it and nothing happened. Nothing opened or did anything. So I did it again and still nothing.

Upon further investigation. Volpanlu does show as running in the task bar (ctr alt del) and when I go to file location, it finds it in Creative > SB Audigy > Volume Panel.

Any ideas how I can fix Creative 5 so I no longer have this message when I boot up the pc?

Yep, I was replying to bignasty.

Just so we are on the same page, you want Creative gone, right?

If that is the case, it seems like a partial un-install that has left orphans and you're having problems due to it not completely getting removed.

So, you have two choices. One, re-install the Creative software with the same installer and then un-install it again. See if that clears up the problem.

Or, I believe you can go into MSConfig, find the line in Startup that contains VolPanlu and remove the check mark to stop it from loading at boot. But, this method will leave the orphans.

Keep in mind that I don't know for sure how VolPanlu is starting. It could also be a leftover service which is set to Automatic.

I think I would go with option one and do a re-install using the same installer that was used before and then un-install it again. This may also clear up the problem you are having with how you select the display mode in Control Panel. It may be due to just enough of the Creative software still present that's causing the lockups.

A second opinion would also be helpful. Anyone?

Sorry, didn't realize it was meant for bignasty.

When I uninstalled Creative 5 it was because I thought it was the way to fix my issue, but now I'm beginning to believe it was only to fix the crackling sound. But when I did uninstall it I chose to remove Creative 5 and all of it's components. I don't know what happened after that, but let me try to reinstall Creative 5 I suppose and see what that does.

How do I reinstall it? I gone through Add/Remove progs and when I click to uninstall/change Creative 5, it does nothing.

    :EDIT:

Not really an "issue", but odd just the same. I cannot start the laptop from the AC Adapter. It must boot off the battery or it will "flash" and then shut itself back off w/o booting. Then when I reboot it, I'll get a message asking me to restore whatever and continue and then it's fine after that. Just weird that it does that and it has since the day I brought it home.

Not really as concerned about that however as I am the Volume Panel error. Still can't seem to figure out what's going on with that.

HI, I also just got my g73 and sadly i too am having this crackling sound issue. Is this a driver issue or do i have to return it to asus immediately? I mean does everyone experience this static sound thing with their speakers? I am really concerned. I hope you guys can help me. I tried everything here.

Have you fixed the problem yourself this way? I don't see how installing a specific graphics driver fixes the crackling noise (a sound card issue). I get the crackling noise whenever I have the Realtek driver installed.

No. I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that with the stock drivers there is no crackling/static noise with my G73. Whatever the problem is, it shouldn't be doing that. Now, if an update of some kind fixes the crackling, then it likely has something to do with your install or some kind of difference with your hardware, as all G73's use the same motherboard.

My G73 also doesn't have the crackling sound issue. It didn't used to have the issue with the Volume Panel error message, that's something I did somehow. But it does have an issue with booting off the power supply, but I can live with that.

I just booted my computer up and got a screen shot actually of that message I get.

I really hope this problem gets fixed with an update of some sort. G73 owners with the same problem, has anyone gotten a decent reply form asus? Do they even acknowledge that this is an existing problem?

    Hi guys,

hereby I'd like to officially register for the G73 crackling sound game :)

Got my G73JH-TZ0091V yesterday and already had the static noise problem from the beginning, before messing around with any drivers.

I can reliably reproduce the problem by running a CPU intensive system test like Everest or Prime for a couple of minutes and triggering a click sound afterwards.

Already tried all kinds of Realtek drivers, but the only working solution I found was using the automatically installed Microsoft drivers.

Just called Asus Support Germany, they said they didn't have this problem before and guessed it is a hardware problem.
I'll give up and return the G73 to Amazon :-(

i've just installed 10.4 driver (after having uninstalled the 10.3 one) and loaded a BR movie. It used to crash (GSOD) after 15 min movie. I've tested with 30 minutes movie and did not get any GSOD. I will of course make more serious tests. So far I just cross my fingers! ;)

I had the same problem come up in mine about 10 minutes after I received the laptop. Was working fine until I went into the creative volume panel. I had left it on for a bit and when I came back it was frozen, did a hard reboot and as soon as the windows desktop appeared a continuous loud static noise came out of the speakers and the desktop froze. Tried to reboot a few more times with the same results. I booted up in safe mode and removed anything creative related. After this the laptop started up and runs great now. I also downloaded and installed the latest realtek drivers.

Had contacted asus online support and they told me to turn off all sound enhancements in the control panel, seems to be working like a charm. I hope this fixes this sound problem. I haven't experienced any static sounds for quite sometime now.

[This is more a question about software and not so much this computer]

I have a question about games (specifically, "Venetica" if anyone has this or has heard of it). I can install it on the Asus G73 no problem. But when I try to run the game it gives an error message: System can't locate file "PhysXLoader.dll"

I of course at this point go and download the said .dll file and place it in the appropriate folder. The game then at least boots the beginning screen and plays music, but then crashes and i need to close it with task manager.

I installed the SAME game on my desktop (which has a 9800 GTX+ gpu) and it runs without a problem. So, I'm not sure if the game just won't run on AMD gpu's or what's going on with it?

Seriously, if you're having problems you can't fix, the next solution should be "CLEAN INSTALL OF WINDOWS".

I had this same issue with Borderlands- it was looking for the Physx program, even though we're running an ATI card. My solution was simply to go to NVidia's website and download the app. Yeah, it's a little stupid, but it fixed it for me, and I'll uninstall it again after I'm done with Borderlands.

Do you have just the Realtek driver installed? I thought the sound enhancements were disabled by default. Anyway, has the crackling sound come back for you since then?

Wow I havent been on this forum in months!! I am the Original Poster. When I had my crackling static issue I tried EVERYTHING. I could not fix the problem. I took it back to best buy and was given a new one. I immediately uninstalled All Creative Bloatware and SoundBlaster EAX Audio crap. I rebooted and them went to my control panel and entered EASE OF ACCESS Center...If the voice comes up instead of the crackling you got yourself a winner...Thanks to all the tweaks on this site, My G73 runs fast and super efficient!

there are those who take the easy path and delete software, and then there are those who forge through and get it working. :D

Riiiiiiight....let me know how much time you invested "forging" through and how great the payout was

Creative/Soundblaster and EAX is obsolete software :)

Maybe those that deleted the software also believe it's useless and found better ways of doing it. :D
