How To: Force G73 Fans To 100%

Want 100% fan speed but don't want to overheat your card to get it? Haven't seen many people post about it but there's a really easy way to force the G73 to run 100% fan speed all the time. It's easy to reset too: just shut down your computer and turn it back on.

Here's a guide (pictures can be added later if necessary/requested):

1. Download the program called 'RW Everything' from the creator's homepage HERE: RW - Read & Write

2. Install the program, and open it up. Up near the top, you'll see a row of icons. Click on the one that looks like a laptop and has the letters 'EC' on it (this is the Embedded Controller function)

3. You'll see rows of numbers in columns on the X axis and Y axis. The bit you need to modify is located at 00x90. So go to the right one (top column will be 00), and then go all the way down to 90 (left column, it's right above A0).

4. Where these two meet, you'll see '00', right below '02'. Double click on it, and a little box will appear. It'll have small rows of numbers going 7, 6, 5, etc.

5. At the very bottom, it'll say '00'. Click on this and change it to '01'. Click OK.

You'll hear your fan go to 100% and stay there. This keeps your laptop running MUCH, much cooler.

If you want your normal (quiet) fan speeds back, simply hit 'Shut Down' in Windows to power the laptop off fully, and then turn it back on. It'll reset the bit value in the embedded controller to 00, and your normal fan speeds will function as usual.

Note: While this will keep your laptop running much cooler, it could also potentially wear out the fan much quicker, requiring it to be replaced sooner. Keep this in mind, I really only force the fan to 100% for gaming to make sure it lasts longer.

Note #2: I've tested this on an Asus G73JH along with a G60JX, and it works on both. This should (in theory) also work on G73SW's, G53's, and G60VX's along with possibly G72's. I make no promises, but you're free to try.

Yeah this has been done for the G51 but it's good to know the same works on the G73. If a reboot doesn't reset it pull the battery and AC obviously.

 

Are your temps that bad that you need the 100% fans constant?

I've done some deep research with RWE on my Acer. There are some fancontrols for Acer which changes the right EC registers too.

I see some interesting registers yet.

03-90 (147) - CPU fan rpm
05-90 (149) - GPU fan rpm
07-90 (151) - CPU fan on (01)/ off (00) - can be set
08-90 (152) - GPU fan on (01)/ off (00) - can be set

 

No, but I live in Southern California and I'd rather be safe than sorry with how hot it gets here. I do know that there's quite a few people on the forums that hae overheating/cooling problems and I figured someone would benefit.

Plus when games are going I can't hear the fan anyways.

 

Still, you should have decent temps no matter where you live with the dual-fan cooling...

True. Though I hit 91C in Witcher2 yesterday first time that has happened outside of Furmark. And I too live in SoCal. I might need a repaste soon *sigh*

Strange about the temps guys im hitting a high 80oC for me it runs the same as furmark when playing the witcher 2 but does not go above my max temps. Normal gaming is around 71oC mind so its definetely using up the resources.

As Mumak (author of HWInfo32 - banned ) said at an older thread is right. The G73 can't be controlled by manipulating EC registers through software (except the 0x90 1-way-turbofan). It seems there aren't the right and enough setable registers to change the fan behaviour like on AW M15x.
Maybe later, I will look at the ACPI table.

I thought I could write a little tool to let the GPU fan constantly run at a lower rpm than the normal start rpm (maybe 1000).
Those "Fan Off / 2600rpm"-switch is a bit ugly. Coming from total silence to 2600rpm of GPU fan is noisy.
On the other side, the CPU fan at 2000rpm is almost unhearable. Have you the same feeling, that the GPU fan is more a rough boy?
I would be so happy, if the GPU fan is as silent as the CPU one. Or the start rpm would be around 2000, not 2600.

No. All clean.
My GPU fan turns off at 43°C. The turn on temp is around 47°C.
On most other G73's the GPU fan won't even turn off

@tilla, i have the same impression as you. I find the CPU fan to be a little more quiet. You're right about those temps too for when the fan starts and stops. The fan only stops when i'm on battery at 100/150 though, stays at 2600 idle on AC.

Now there's two things that i want to know if they are doable on the JH, get control of the fans and if the 6970m is indeed viable in it. Too bad i don't have a 6970m handy or i would have tried a long time ago.

 

I tried everything I could find from software to editors like the one in this thread to lower the fan speed, I don´t think it is possible. If anybody does find a way please share.

Somewhere in another thread it was stated that due to the Asus proprietary format for the gpu size, the 6970m is not possible.

 

slv7 managed to fit a 6970m in a JW, it will fit with a modified heatsink and the connector is standard MXM on the G73s so no problems there. The Bios not liking the 6970m or increased power draw are the two problems i can see getting in the way right now. I think someone tried a 460m in a JH and it didn't work but a MSI 5870 worked somewhat so there is still hope, though very little.

 

I have edited the first post direction to fix a few errors I saw when using the Best Buy JH you will see then in Bold test.
It is not a big deal, but I like it to be spot on..

So I saw my Ideal temp go from 49 to 41. That is not bad at all...

What about the CPU fan?

Modern games tax the GPU, I fly Flightsim X only, CPU heavy and old code, and the CPU temp goes crazy!

Any ideas why this does not work me? I change the correct section from 00 -> 01 and nothing happens.

 

That's weird, works fine for me. I used it the first time i swapped to the 6970m.

 

I know nothing happens, or actually something does it turns my turbo mode off and I have had to turn it back on with Throttlestop! haha

 

I did it and it works. but after shutting down and turning on again it is again set to 100% but the value is 00
how can I fix it? plz help

 

Turn off the your computer

unplug the ac

remove the battery

And keep its everything unplugged for 10 mins

after 10 mins turn it back on

everything should work perfectly now .
