I always thought that in order to have DUAL CHANNEL memory you need to install RAM Chips in identical pairs

as in, have slot 1 = 8 GB 1600 Mhz. RAM
    slot 2 = 8 GB 1600 Mhz. RAM
    slot 3 = 8 GB 1600 Mhz. RAM
    slot 4 = 8 GB 1600 Mhz. RAM

I recently got an ASUS G750JX with 24 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz. RAM and there is one out of the 4 SODIMM slots empty

So I was thinking I definitely must be running on single channel since one slot is empty thus defying the above theory of having RAM chips installed in pairs

to my surprise, upon opening Speccy, it reports that the RAM is running in Dual Channel mode?!

How come? can someone explain please?

Note: with my previous G75VW which had 16GB 1600 Mhz. RAM running in Dual Channel mode I used to get 7.8 in the WEI index score for memory but now with my current laptop I get 7.9

I wonder why would ASUS choose such a silly number as 24 GB instead og either 16 GB or 32 GB to stay in Dual channel mode

You're running in asynchronous dual channel mode, meaning the first 16 GB will run in dual channel and if you hit more than that, the other 8 GB will run in single channel.

24 GB is more than most of the population needs anyways.

So I guess this is the new Intel Flex Mode heh?

I went to the Computer Plaza here in Dubai to purchase another 8 GB Stick of 1600 Hz. RAM but all they have are the older 1.5V RAM I need 1.28 - 1.35V RAM to work properly with Haswell otherwise the higher voltage older RAM will cause more heat and instability for the new Haswell CPUs

Guess I have to wait for a while until 1.35 V RAM is more common here in Dubai
