I think it's finally time to retire my "venerable" P-7811FX and get a new laptop. However, I'd like to know what kind of performance to expect when playing StarCraft II. I get the impression that at 1920x1080 the game should run on ultra no problem, but maybe I'm wrong.

I believe it would run on ultra, as indicated by a G73jh owner on the Sc2 forums last week.

if you forget to limit the FPS it will run so amazingly your GPU will literally melt.

Yeah Ultra runs fine in most situations, but High is recommended. Cant see the difference in the game on a 17" screen 1920x1080 and it leaves you more headroom should too much action be going on at once.

Frankly, I'm surprised there's not a class action lawsuit against Blizzard for the destruction of thousands of computers due to that 'limit' not being present until quote: "a future patch". The average gamer would never know unless he or she had a SC2 forum obsession ...I found out after complaining in WoW's guild chat (about crashes and overheats) and a fellow SC2 player told me how to fix it.

I only get the FPS creep when a video is loading/or just before it starts...the FPS would go up to 180 FPS or some for like a second!

Otherwise in videos I get an FPS of ~30-60, and ingame it keeps on 40 FPS, sometimes going down to 35 FPS or some. The 40 FPS seems to be a set limit as it never goes beyond that.

    This is all on ultra

    Never had any heat issues.

I had the issue on my MSI GX740 (i7/ati 5870). I would get overheat shut downs non stop and at first, I thought it was driver issues, so I spent the entire night on it, only to realize it wasn't. The following night I smelt burning and soon after, the laptop would no longer turn on. It's a shame, really, b/c its happened to an enormous amount of people.

The G73's seem safe anyways, since they have an amazing venting system, compared to 'other' gaming laptops, where only a corner is used to vent (even on some 17"+ models). I'm sure if all laptops adopted the Asus 'Stealth Design', laptops would never run into these ridiculous overheat-shut down issues.

I have not implimented the fix on my G73 or my desktop, an uncapped fps would only hurt a sytem without proper cooling as any system should be stable and safe under 100% load.

As a benchmarker I run tests like furmark or OCCT that are 8x worse than SC2 with this "bug' witch is not a bug at all, most games out there do not have a fps cap so not sure why SC2 is getting all this crazy bad rap for it.

SC2 performs quite well in 1v1 on ultra for most of the time minus couple hundreds zerglings running on creep or fleet of carriers shoot out interceptors. Consider lowering to High if you want to have smoother experience playing 2v2 or 3v3+ even.

I run the game on Ultra all the time and i don't even need to use a cooler under it. I use the FPS cap settings in variables.txt on both the G73 and my desktop and its worked well.

The funny thing is that the FPS skyrockets on screens with minimal graphic processing needed. So aslong as your in action and not staring at something boring your fine. Its a good incentive to keep your APM up.
