Just wondering how long have you guys been gaming on the same laptop before it breaking down completely. Minor RMAs and stuff are fine, but something like a full out motherboard failure is not.
I was just curious as there is a discussion going on about if gaming can harm the lifespan of your laptop. I game a lot.

Toshiba M40: Bought in 2005, never RMA'ed and still kicking though it is showing it's age now. Gamed to death on it until 2009.

N50: RMA'ed twice for LCD issues. Gamed to death on it until mid 2010, still occasionally game on it, no RMA needed for 1 year. Whatever had a defect is now fixed.

G73JH: Acquired May 2010, aside from degraded paste, never had any issues and it's still working like a charm.

Anyone saying that gaming will reduce the lifespan of a laptop is wrong. A laptop that isn't cared for (the problem is the user not the laptop) or a laptop with bad thermal design (meaning the manufacturer screwed up somewhat and you should have done your research :p) may die prematurely due to gaming. A laptop designed to handle it's components TDP and well cared for will last you a long time. You will probably be replacing it before it dies.

Toshiba Satellite Pro (2002): Never RMA'd, only problem was A/C adapter module was unsouldered from mobo and had to have it resolder. Lasted 2 years

HP Pavillion DV7: Lasted 2 years, RMA'd 3 or 4 times, hinges, overheating, corrup bios chip and fan problems. In all cases the laptop was gone for MAX 3 days...HP have incredible customer service...also thank god for their cheap warranty extensions...about 100$ for 3 additionnal years

G73JH: Owner since January 2010, never had a single problem. Only problem was overheating issues after about 3 months, i figured that doing a fresh install, and installing all necessary drivers without all bloatware fixed that problem. So after a year and a half, here is an update:
Best purchase i did for this laptop was a Vertex 2 SSD, laptop is incredibly fast, never repasted and still idles at aroun 47 - 49. Last time i formatted laptop was in february when i got my SSD. Again, never had any GSOD, BSOD or any known G73 problem except for laggy keyboard which was fixed with Gary's newest Bios. VERY Happy with my Asus experience, i got 3 of my friend to buy it, they too are very happy. Some people have a lot of problem with G73 ans Asus, i've had none...so i can't complain

Every laptop I've ever bought still works. My G73 is 11 months old right now and has been near perfect, right now it doesn't have a single issue.

    Nice replies!

My old toshiba in my sig is still chugging away. Its now a family laptop. So far its going to be 3 years come october. Problems with it have been minor for the most part. A replacement hard drive and optical drive are the only things i had to replace.

I change laptops every year, so I personally haven't had one die on me, but an ASUS M51sn I handed over to a family member 3 years ago, just recently died because of GPU failure. I'd give credit to ASUS for it lasting as long as it did, having a defective Nvidia G84 GPU (Geforce 9500M GS). However, I still have an old Toshiba from 10 years ago that still runs. Having a laptop that still runs after a decade is quite amazing. :)

Had my JH the BB version since July 2010 and it run from Jan 2010 before being refurbed.

I have left it on 24 hours a day since I got it and ran it like bat out of hell stressing and benchmark it routinely and not to mention the load when in use is normally nearing 90-100%.

Never had a problem and I have dissassembled it 11 times and repaste notoriously to get as low temps as I can and everything still works perfectly and is in mint condition.

The JH price per power should not be overlooked. It is a rock.

Ive had mine for about a year now. Bought the g73jh-RBBX05 for $860 (steal :p ). The laptop actually came with a free copy of Dragon Age: origins. Aside from the sometimes faulty touchpad, I have had zero issues with the laptop. I also have yet to disassemble my laptop as I was fortunate enough to have damn good stock paste jobs. CPU idles at 46-48c, and gpu idles at 54c maxing at about 85c after about 2 hours (though I have seen it reach 89c after 4 straight hours of the Witcher 2 :p).

I had a compaq CQ50 (yup, some cheap crap). It pretty much died after about 1.5 year and during that time I repaired it myself once and had to RMA it once.

I have my G73JH since 11 months now and never had to RMA and do not have any issues except I had to repaste.

Working in IT for a pretty big company, we go through a LOT of laptops for our sales team and managers. We generally get IBM/Lenovos but we've also used Sony, Toshiba, and Dell for whatever reason. In all honestly, in the 15 years or so I've worked here, this ASUS I bought for myself is the only one to ever give me any trouble. I don't think I'll ever buy another one. Oh well, there was an old Mac G3 laptop that was the biggest piece of crap on earth, but I consider it more of a toy than a computer so I don't know if it counts. :)

I had MSI GX701x and it was one big disaster. After three days since I bought it. I had to send him to claim because GPU fried out (idle temp was 96 °C). I got it back after a month with replaced MB and GPU. This was repeated about 4 times. Plus other mirror bugs like keyboard printed to LCD, bad hinges and others. One thing was really unbearable. It was temperature at touchpad and keyboard. This temperature was more than 50°C while gaming, and after an hour I had a burned hands. I had that notebook a year and half, and more than half of it was to claim. Fortunately when my lawyer was involved I got my money back. But I don't think that failures was directly caused by playing games.

My G73Jh was also to claim because of failed HDD. I got it back within two weeks with the new HDD.

Wow, you got unlucky, but it sounds like the GX701 had design issues.

I'm notorious for not holding onto notebooks for long, but I do have the following kicking around:

IBM PS/note: This was brand new and top of the line... in 1992. It still works just fine, although there's not much you can get done with a 25MhZ 386, 4MB of RAM, and Win 3.1.

ThinkPad 380ED: This one's a little newer, but it's still a 1997-era brick. Massive BSODs on WinME, but I heard that ME was a giant piece of fail so I think I might refresh it and do some retro gaming with Win95 or something. :p

ThinkPad T21(see a pattern here?): This one's been around since 2001, and my first 'modern' laptop. I've had this one since 2004, and even with the abuses I've thrown at it it has never failed on me. Kept me sane on cross-country road trips(even played Half-Life on it in the car), used it through trade school, and was kicked around in my laptop bag as my primary computer until '07. Other than replacing the stock HDD when it died and the LCD when my cat jumped on it, it's been extremely reliable. I'll break it out from time to time.

ThinkPad X200: Yes, I'm a ThinkPad fan. I've had this one for about a year, and is the machine I'm typing this post on. It's been a great general use system, but the previous owner put it through the wringer. The lid has some serious scarring from what I think was a drop, and I replaced the palmrest and keyboard. When I got it there were 150 cycles on the battery since January 2009, so it had a lot of use in a year and a half. I sent it in for a warranty repair because the inverter was buzzing; they replaced the motherboard for some reason but not the inverter.

G73JH: I've only had my G73 for a couple of months, but I like it. It feels sturdy enough and runs much, much cooler and quieter than the Dell XPS M1730 I used to have. I sincerely doubt I'll get any hardware failures on this one with proper upkeep. I'm not an intense, 24/7 gamer, but there are a few titles I get into. This one was a Best Buy model, which I bumped he specs considerably on... SSD, 1080p matte display, extra RAM, etc. With a BIOS/vBIOS flash it works wonders.
