Expanding on the question: How long is it estimated till the 460M can't play high quality on games?

It's outdated as soon as it came out.

It's not outdated for the price. There are 3 better ones from Nvidia: 470M, 480M, and 485M... but they are much more expensive. I think there is plenty of space right now for games to expand into, graphics-card wise... maybe 3 years until the highest quality begins to slow down the fps? Depends a lot on the game, too. FPSs of the same quality are much less graphics-card-intensive than simulations or RTSs, and there is an enormous variation in how well the game itself is programmed -- perhaps a max-FPS difference of 200-400% for well-optimized and well-tested titles from the major studios (EA, Activision..) versus "rushed" ones.

Agreed, the desktop GTX460 spanks the 460m, and the desktop version is only considered a budget performance card. The 5770, which our 5870m is based on, is considered a mid-grade GPU by desktop standards.
Fortunately most games have console ports, as long as the PS3 and xbox 360 are the main consoles, we should be able to play anything at mid-high settings at good frame rates.
How long will the 460M last for?
