So I've finally been able to fully install Snow Leopard on my G73JH. I had to look over multiple different forums to collect everything, and to finally get it right. I did this with a retail copy of Snow Leopard and the files I attached below. The only thing missing from it, is the 10.6.8 update from Apple. I would hope that even though I have 16GB of Ram and the 920XM it would work for those who don't.

This isn't my work, but just a compilation of everything that I've read and found to complete the install on mine. The majority of the DIY was from BDockSaint (user from tonymacx86). Supposedly the only things that don't work are Sleep, HDMI Audio Out, and the Back lit Keyboard. I have the Intel 6200 card, so it doesn't work at all, but I'll prob have to replace it.

    1. Burn iBoot Legacy 2.72 from the attached files.

    2. Backup everything from windows before you boot, just in case. I had an empty second hard drive, so I just installed in that one. Make sure you know what hdd you want to install to. Nothing worse than erasing the wrong drive.

    3. When you are ready throw the iBoot disk and reboot your computer. Once the computer boots up into the iBoot menu eject the iBoot disk and throw in you SnowLeopard disc. Hit F5 and it will allow you to choose the OSX Install disk. Choose your language once booted and then click on utilities on the top. You are going to have to use disk utility to erase your second hard drive and format as Mac OSX Journaled. After it is formatted, install OSX

    4. Reboot after 30-40 minutes. WHEN you see the ASUS boot up logo hit esc until you get the option to boot from other locations. Pull out your Snow Leopard and throw in your iBoot disk. Choose your DVD drive and wait for it to boot. Once it does click on your OSX Partition and boot into Snow Leopard.

    3. My disk was 10.6.3 so I had to download 10.6.8 update from Apple prior to this After 10.6.8 is installed, use DSDT Auto Patcher (in files) and open it up. Choose Asus and G73JH from the drop down and apply (extract from DSDT should be checked, if not click it). Once it is done it should populate to your desktop. (use the image as reference ONLY)

    4. Use Multibeast and install the following:
    Install UserDSDT
    System Utilities (all of them)
    VoodooHDA 0.2.1
    3rd Party SATA
    ElliotForceLegacyRTC
    FameSMC and all plugins
    NullCPUPowerManagement,
    PS/2 Keyboard

    5. Install Chimera.

    6. Grab Chameleon Wizard, and after opening it, go to the SMBios tab.

    7. Choose premade SMBioses, chose MacBookPro 8.2 Create a random serial number and Save. (don't copy the attached picture, just use it at reference)

    8. Still in Wizard, click org.chameleon.Boot. Check the following: GUI
    Timeout: 2
    Legacy Loop
    Kernel: mach_kernel
    Use Kernel Cache
    npci-0x2000
    darkwake=0
    Ethernet Built In
    System Type: Laptop
DSDT.aml (destination is the dsdt.aml file you made in step 3)
    SMBios.plist (destination is in "Extra"Folder)
    Restart Fix
    Generate P-States
    Generate C-States
    Graphics Enabler
    Ati Config: Orangutan
When done save it. (use image as reference)

    10. Use Kext Wizard to install all three kext files (located in the files).

    11. Use Kext Wizard to repair and create mkext in Extras folder.

    12. Use Kext Utility, and allow it to repair permissions.

    13. Restart. Should boot back into Snow Leopard to a nearly 100% functional Snow Leopard install.

    Hope it works for everyone.

Hackintosh discussion is now allowed under NBR Forum Rules, so long as it does not concern software piracy.

Yeah. Hackintoshies were NEVER illigal. Question though. If I wanted to dual boot from one HDD is that possible??

    Thanks!!!

How does it run vs native Mac? Last time I did a hackintosh was my EEE 1000H and while it ran pretty darn well it had a long boot time.

I was wondering what to do with my G73 now that I got a new laptop, guess I know now :D

Did you make OSX your only OS or do you have dual boot?

Probably a sticky w/ links would be best (or part of an existing sticky). A merge may get messy and cause data to get misplaced.

Yeah, that is the main argument i got going over the merger. Right now with those two threads we have it would be feasible as this one was started after the last post in the other. I probably won't sticky it, but i can easily add it to the current sticky.

Very likely, i listed it as for the G73JH since it's the only laptop it's been tried on so far in the Asus gaming forums.

So If I was to have 2 HDD's inside the unit.

First - How much less battery would I get with 2X hdd's instead of 1

Second - If I remove the HDD's and install the os's seperately, once I install both in at the same time, how to I create a boot option menu?

Chameleon is the boot loader that is installed. You will have to change your boot priority in your bios to the hdd with osx, it will automatically boot to chameleon.

    cuban11182,
Thank you very much for this guide. It is one of the very few detailed guides for the G73 and, in my case, the only one that worked.
Are you going to try to do the same for Lion? I had a bunch of problems trying to install it and a similar guide would be highly useful for all G73 users.

I really have no desire to have Mac on my laptop. I just remember asking a questions when I purchased mine and it was shot down quickly. I remember how hard it was to figure out a long time ago, and thought people would benefit from a how to. I'm also in the process of getting ready to move to Texas, so I'm really busy at the moment.

I would say follow that link that I provided. The guy who initially created the post got lion to work well. I'm glad to hear it worked well for you though!

why SL? I installed Lion on my G51j I noticed even less sound volume out the crappy sound system, so you really cant do much multimedia with it everything else seems to work fine, oh and it seemed to run hotter, tho I couldnt find any temp tools for Mac that showed gpu temps. Oh and I installed chameleon on the other hardrive and put lion it it, what I would do is hit esc during bootup select the hard drive that has OSX on it and boot up . I also had to change the wireless adapter it was only 13 dollars.

btw it is very usable and I had been using it alot it is getting me to want a MBPro since they have better hardware anyway I could always use parrallels or bootcamp and have windows7

    Awesome guide!

I have been reading a few guides and you sir have written the best and most uptodate... I am having serious issues though.. I get 10.6.3 installed but once I do the update (through mac update service) and then do multi beast and everything then reboot... I start having problems... just gets stuck on mac boot up.. or boots into "last good hibernation image" then freezes.

im on my 4th retry. this time im going to use the update via apple downloaded onto my thumb drive...

your dl link is not working and the mirrior has issues. the dsdt autopatcher does not seem to work.. I ended up getting some other dsdt auto patcher .. however im not quite sure i am understanding the ins and outs...

dsdt is like the driver map for os x?

and needs to be edited. so the patcher grabs your bios hard ware information and injects into the stock dsdt? where is the stock dsdt? the patcher i was using was asking for the dsdt source and the patch source. i found the patch in the folders under asus g73jh then i put it on my desktop and ran multi beast... i could be way off base just guessing..

im also running into problems with multi beast where u mention using voodhda i can not find that anywhere in multi beast.. what is it under?

so any help would be much apreciated

SO scratch the last post. I started to get the hang of installing kexts and everything and got os x up and running.

    only problem i have is

    no audio
    sleep screws up video
want to set up dual boot on same hd with windows 8

so if some one could please help me out with these issues.. i would apreciate it. I know putting os x and windows on same hd is a bad idea.. but I hope its possible.

Maybe it will give me reason to order that ssd I have been putting off.

    lol

about audio.. i dont get it. i have not seen any else with problems using the voodo hda kext.

I even removed the applehda kext from system/extensions..

ive tried everything i can think of so far... when i open up my audio preferences there are no devices.

    Hey there.

I followed all the steps involved, and was able to get upgraded to 10.6.8, however, in gaining the better video resolution, I lost sound, and when I try to use kextwizard, now instead of listing the hdd as "MacOS" it lists the following: Item 1, Item 2.

Any idea how to recuperate sound functionality, and make it so kextwizard recognizes my Hacintosh formatted HD in Kextwizard?

    Any help is appreciated, thx.

The mirror doesn't have issues. I just tested it. Just make an account. Mailinator wont work. :p

Hey there Cuban11182. Can you tell me if there's a way to get the sound and network drivers from the original install disc, and use them in the upgrade? or to salvage the video driver and bring it back for use on the original install from snow leopard cd? It's hard to choose between video without sound n network or sound/network without video..

    Thanks!

Just installed it with this guide ; EXCELLENT WORK !

But one thing went wrong, when i reboot at the last point, it goes in loop. The only way i can get to the desktop is with the iBoot disc.
I'm retrying the install right now and i'll recheck my installation sequence to see if i missed something.

Thanks again for the great guide !

Take a look at rEFInd. Install it to the gpt boot partition, register it, etc.

Not entirely sure if I see the point with using OSX after the 64 bit land and ppc was retired, though. But still, it's perfectly possible to use it - with some snags like acpi control, hardkeyed references that will never be fixed, etc.

I recently installed Mavericks on my G73JH without any problems..in fact, it runs MV much better than ML..the install on my 256GB SSD boots in just 10 seconds..
with the right DSDT tweaks even the keyboard light works .. ;)

    cheers
