I first posted this in the regular Asus forum and forgot that there's an ASUS Gaming Notbook Forum.
So I got a mic that plugs into the 3.5mm jack on the side of the laptop. Problem is, it's extremely quiet unless I'm like 2 inches away from it, even with a 30db boost and the mic volume all the way up. When I'm right next to it, it sounds extremely clear, but when I'm like a foot and a half away, it sounds extremely quiet and muffled, and I have to talk quite loudly for it to even record. When I'm right next to it, I can talk in a normal tone of voice and get a clear recording. I am using Realtek audio.

It's kinda hard to troubleshoot such an issue not having it in hand. You could try running through the Speech Recognition Wizard and see if it configs it for you.

It's probably a dynamic mic, that would explain the proximity effect.
If you want to leave a mic on your desk and have it pick you up, you probably want an omnidirectional condenser mic like the Audio Technica ATR-4600 or similar.
