I have a ASUS G50VT-X1 that is about 2.5 years old. I'm concerned that my HD may die in the future that I would lose my system. I know I can press F10 to restore the system to factory state, but what if the HD is dead (the partition where the system is located would be dead too)? I don't have a OS DVD to install the system again.

In a case like this, what option do I have? I don't want to spend a few hundred dollars to get a new OS.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

There Should be sticker with the install code for your OS on your computer. IF not let us know , it can easily be gotten from windows with 3rd party tools. If you have win 7 see this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

Then you need a driver disk to get the system up and running (easy). OR go to the ASUS support site and download the drivers (harder ) This will result in a 'clean install'
Botton line you do not have to purchase the OS again, you already own it.

A lot of machines will also have the option of creating recovery DVDs. The only disadvantage to that is that you won't be able to do a clean install with it like if you download just the OS. That install code should be on the sticker on the bottom of your machine. Since it has already been used to install it once on the machine already, you may have to get Microsoft to unlock the code but that can be done with a simple phone call.

The AI Recovery CD's will not work if the Recovery Partition is missing, ergo, if your HDD dies and no image of the Recovery Partition exists, you ist pooched. It's one reason I recommend to everyone to set up a proper backup system.

Thanks for the information. The laptop has Vista. Is there a download for Vista too? So if I can get a copy of Vista, the number on the bottom of the laptop would work?

Is it possible to retrieve the partition with OS and factory drivers etc to another HD so I may be able to image it onto another HD?

    Thanks,
