    Hi!
This thread is continuation of this http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/477718-asus-g73jh-5870m-powerplay-what-does-doesnt-do.html Quagmire's thread(I want to thank him for his efforts)

As you know desktop cards can uderclock core when you are not using any graphic intensive application. Unfrotunately videocard in our Asus G73JH running always at max.
I made this tread to describe how to downclock HD5870 in Asus G73JH autoamtically, using ATI Powerplay function.
Lets start. I've read that many Asus G73Jh users interested in temperature decrising of HD5870. Many question were about idle temperaures of videocard.
As Quagmire described in his thread you ATI made Powerplay tab in Catalyst Control Panel where you can decrease frequency of VGA core from 700 to 300 and reverse, by choosing maximize performance or maximize battery life.

    Now by order:
1)Go to PowerPlay select maximize battery life when plugged in.Core clock now 300MHz

2)Go to Options tab in top right corner. Choose Profiles-Profiles Manager

In profiles manager name profile as you want I named it 2D and tick only PowerPlay. Now choose activation tab in this window. Tick desktop shortcut option.

    3) Go to powerPlay again and choose Maximize Performance, your core clock now 700MHz
Go to Profiles manager again and create new profile I named it 3D. Choose desktop shortcut activation again.

4)Now when you have 2 shortcuts 2D and 3D on your desktop. Right click on shortcut and choose properties.Click at shotcut key field and press any key(I have assigned PageUp for 3D and PageDown in 2D). That will create hot keys to run these shortcuts. Go to Startup folder and copy you 2D shortcut there.

5)Now when laptop will sartup it will automatically clock the core clock 300MHz.

My ambient 23C. You can see my idle temps after 30 min of surfing internet office working.

Finally you will get lower temps at idling, you will save energy. When you will need full energy of your videocard just press Ctrl+Alt+Page Up. Your card will clock 700MHz.When you are on desktop just press Ctrl+Alt+Page Down it will underclock videocard to 300Mhz.

Simple, and very clear guide...thank you very much. But the P4Gamer and Window's scheme will override the powerplay if im not not mistaken?

A more elegant method would just be to set one of the Power4Gear options (I chose Quiet Office) to always use "Maximize battery life" regardless of if it's plugged in or not. You can also turn on Intel's DPST and get both at the same time. This will then start it up at either 300 or 700 depending on which power option you have selected.

Now, every time I use this in the office, I select Quiet Office and it downclocks it without any shortcuts or the like. When I'm playing I select Balanced or High Performance.

Why waste energy and have your laptop running hotter than it needs to?

Nice write-up Tim +rep. Pretty slick booting with 300 clock and just using a hotkey profile to jump to 700. Great job! Thanks.

    Good alternative aramis.

If I'm sitting idle at a light, why would I throw my car into neutral and floor it?

When I go out on business trips this is the only laptop I bring with me. It has to fill all duties, including sitting there idle while I remote in to a pc back home. No need to have graphics running full-bore during that.

I don't know much about internal temps but I've read that you can put more wear on internal parts by rapidly going between temps (like turning the computer off/on more than you need to) than just keeping it running at a single higher temp. Is there any truth to this that should be taken into consideration here?

Haven't heard about that. But, if you have desktop your video card doing that all the time. it downclocks itself in 2D mode and as soon as you launch intensive 3D it raises it's frequencies to max(what gives you rapid temps increase). So far mine been working fine for 2 years now. Don't think that mobility 5870 is exeption in our case.
