UGH!!!
I purchased the G73jh-A1 because it had such awesome specs and had good reviews(!!!). I patiently awaited and received it yesterday...however, I have had NOTHING but problems with this computer!
The first, which it seems that nearly everyone is having a problem with--is that it can't play any games! It's a GAMING LAPTOP. From the REPUBLIC OF GAMERS. With this supposedly awesome GAMING GRAPHICS CARD! It started when I put the FFXIV beta on it. It just said "FFXIV Beta has stopped working." So after all this research, we find that it's a problem with Catalyst Control Center. But, what's this? Catalyst Control Center won't even open. It, itself has the same error "Catalyst Control Center has stopped working." OK. So further research shows us that it's having some issue with .NET. So I uninstall CCC, get a new version of .NET, reinstall. Wow, it works. Problem solved? NO! SO after getting it to actually open these programs, we learn that it cannot play them. Red vertical pinstripes merely seconds after opening the game, freezing it.
So somewhere I read that I need to go get some older version of CCC, 9.12. But that doesn't work. Now FFXIV beta won't start again. So I uninstall that and somehow end up with the 10.8 version again. And now I'm reading all this crap about BIOS updates, which I have NO idea how to do and some people even say that this won't fix it either.
I am BEYOND frustrated. I'm ready to ship this piece back. But what's that? Mwave.com doesn't take notebooks back. Or anything else apparently if you read their exceptions. WHY is this product out on the market like this?! It's completely useless for it's intended purpose! How did I miss this blaring problem in the reviews? I didn't see anything about this problem when I purchased it! Maybe this wouldn't be a big deal if I was more computer savvy(I'd say I'm about average), but I don't want to go poking around doing stuff that could potentially destroy my laptop...and I shouldn't HAVE too! I really, really wanted to like this laptop.
AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
/end rant

AHHHHHHHH! if you read.... http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/515309-how-fix-your-gsod-blues.html
Update your vBIOS and install 10.8 -
Maybe if you read and follow the instructions, you won't be so angry.
Take a chill pill and do some reading. You see, the G73 comes with problems so only the very best users can have the honor of using them. If you cannot pass this test, you cannot use the machine. -
-
"Only a true Jedi can master the G73." -
Chill dude really.. i also had a few problems and did updates.. it works like a charm.
-
People these days talk before they think... Its annoying
-
-
I can see how getting a new laptop out of the box and it not doing anything it was designed to do to be a bit annoying, but he did make it this far at least take a little look around and see if their are answers to your questions. If you are buying a Gamer Laptop, you have to be ready for "Gamer" problems since normal laptops with basic integrated graphics and such are usually just fine through their lifetime with normal business app and simple multimedia functions.
-
But seriously, who da hell think you would had to do so much updates and risky stuff too just to get this labtop working. People would probably expect this labtop to be a buy and good to go gaming labtop but so much updates is needed to get it going.
-
...Seriously, this is completely normal on any gaming rig in order to get the best out of it. Flashing BIOS isn't new- I even did the same for my HDTV when I first got it. -
C'mon guys, clearly he just wanted to make a big entrance lol
And if it wasnt for FF, most things would have worked flawlessly on the stock stuff, im sure theres still plenty of people out there that once they get something just let it do its own thing (regular windows updates for example), but dont go out of their way to do anything else.
Im not providing an excuses, but simply an explanation. -
Too bad too many problems with the bios updating screwing up people keyboard and drivers.
-
Oh, and there's a fix for that too. -
People who find it unacceptable to update software need to stay away from computers and stick to consoles. You can't expect things on PC's to be problem free and refuse to update. Yes the G73 has its quirks, but if you just got the laptop this past week, you pretty much missed all of them.
-
It only takes one hour to update everything. Not a really big task. Although I believe they should update the updating process for people who are new to technology. Perhaps an automatic windows type update for all drivers would help ...and it would also give me more free time instead of getting calls at 2AM from a family member needing help with driver updates LOL
-
And as for OP, chill out, try the new vbios and install the 10.8 drivers, I believe that would fix your problems. -
NERD RAGE! NERD RAGE! NERD RAGE! Kekekekekekeke, kekekekekekeke!

Come on people........give the guy a rest. He is totaly correct on this. He shouldn't have to do all this work to get a very expensive laptop working correctly.
If you people can't understand his frustration then I suggest you get of your high horses, stop acting like nerds and be helpful or stop posting at all. And stop acting like it's normal you have to do work to get the most out of this laptop.
And on the flashy thing. Asus provides the Winflash. Not everyone comes here. It's Asus it's fault in the first place. It's not anyones fault they use the Winflash. Does the laptop contain a note to visit www.notebookreview.com first before doing anything? -
I completely agree on this.
When you buy a laptop, especially an expensive gaming laptop, you should get a product that works when you get it, without you having to spend weeks working on it, with real risks of bricking it in the process to get it into a semi-woking state.
I understand the frustration. The OP is clearly upset, but he has a point and the right to be. -
Hell I did a clean install yesturday and played Starcraft II fine without even installing the latest Direct X, just straight off the DVD.
And if you read what he wrote, it's mind boggling. Where did he read that he should install Catalyst 9.12? And his problems with ATi CCC are pretty weird. I do not think his issues were G73 as much as he really messed up his rig and isn't telling the whole story.
Even before the new vBios came out, I had no issues with FF Benchmark, none at all. -
obviously some kid that doesnt know how to do a clean install of windows and messed up...

That aside, software and driver updates are as certain as death and taxes.
If you can't handle basic simple tasks like software and driver updates, you may want to sell your machine and look into a macbook. They handle all these things for you so you can remain oblivious. Macs even have STEAM support, so you can actually play some games. Sure it won't play FFXIV, but you won't have to deal with those nasty update things that are as much a part of PCs as getting your oil changed or getting your tires rotated are to cars.
And remember kids, "if we don't embrace technology, we're destined to be replaced by it" [SKTFM] -
Nerd raging because Beta isn't working perfect. That's a good laugh.
-
Please dont talk like youre all knowing neno, just until recently you didnt even know how to flash the vBios.
And its strange how FFXIV works on other machines without problems if its really garbage. Those comments are just stupid. -
There are plenty of threads with all of us here helping each other. The OP complained and gave his opinion, and we gave ours. Where is it written that's wrong?
It IS normal, and not just for laptops. -
if you do not know where I work or I do, why you say stupid things? maybe you can not shut up
I've been been working with computers and updating bios probably since before you knew what a computer is
and just do a bios upgrade on a laptop is usually quite safer than on a desktop but even update the VBIOS in a single GPU carrd is easier if you follow correct instructions (which seems you do not know how)
Still, you can still complaining about everything, which is what you do bestbut please, ignore me then i will ignore you and everyone will be happy ^^

Well, you obviously didn't Google "G73JH". The 2nd and 4th listings are forum posts from this crazy site called "NotebookReview.com", and on that site many issues and fixes for said issues are discussed. Oh wait, that's HERE. Where you've come for your troubles instead of your prerequisite education.
You probably should have done your homework a little better before your purchase. I really flippin' hate when consumers don't properly educate themselves. You'll get no sympathy from me. -
well... reviews are usually done with the stock drivers , and this drivers haven´t GSOD, most games work with stock drivers.
But as thescinema says : google and this forums are your friendbut
-
I remember you asking about flashing the beta vBios not long ago so thats how i responded, but i cant find what your occupation is anywhere so sorry if i missed it and offended you by it if it was just a general inquiery.
But the fact is that flashing the Bios and vBios is never completely safe, so what you wrote ("Yeah, if you update vBIOS without plug-in, and battery at 5%, floating in a swimming pool while someone jumps over, it is risky stuff.") really compelled me write up a response. Flashing the vBios is not something the end customer should do in any case and the service centers (at least here) wont do it for you, so doing it yourself remains your only option and it shouldnt be so.
I do find it hard to believe you wouldnt come across us mentioning all these problems if you just googled it before your purchase... -
I would have gone on my rant and called the "techies" elitists that cannot see past the code in the Matrix, but there are a few issues with the OP that I have:
Biggest Issue: "I cannot play ANY games" yet only one game that is in BETA status is listed. I think this is what really destroys most of the sympathy one would have. Have you tried other games, or is FF the center of the universe so if it cannot play that then it cannot game?
Smallest Issue: Okay, the laptop is not perfect and you took the time to join the forum after spending precious time trying to get it to work. Why not ask someone how to get it to work? Would have been more successful than saying the laptop is crap.
The End. -
Even so, sorry for my angry response
I think that is very difficult that update VBIOS goes wrong (following some safe steps) it isn´t 100% safe but it isn´t safe 100% to cross the street too
we try to help telling him the things that he can do to solve the problem. but little else we can do...
He should send his laptop to RMA if he doesn´t want to update vbios...
we are not ASUS...we do not have to endure her anger...
-
Have to admit when im wrong... Sorry about the false accusation, my memory is bad and i mixed up someone elses posts for being yours.
I know nothing in this world is 100% safe, but when it comes to flashing the Bios/vBios that small chance can become problematic (especially when Murphy is at work) is all i was trying to illustrate, but youre right the chance is very small if you do it as you should. Ive flashed the vBios on many machines so alltogether it had to be at least 50 flashes and only 1 went wrong, but could be solved by a blind flash. Would be much more problematic if a Bios flash failed though... nothing to do if that happens. -
the cuestion is that there are 2 solutions: RMA and vBIOS upgrade, but if the user is stubborn and don´t want to fix it and he only complains writting post like the first one http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...o-frustrated-my-new-g73jh-a1.html#post6693692, there are nothing what we can do -
What's the funniest thing from this whole thread is that the OP hasn't even replied whether he did the update and is fixed, or did the whole teenage rage thing and got rid of his laptop.
-
Some places wont accept a RMA if a user bricked it by failing a flash or even if they see a vBios that isnt official yet on it (as is the case with our service centers) so thats oversimplifying... Annyway its unpleasant to do either flashing or RMA, especially if you havent done anything like it before and RMA takes time and gives you no guarantee it will be fixed (at least the techs here do not fix it, they just slap on the 10.1 driver and say it works) woulndnt you agree?
-
Here's the problem I have with the OP's post: for the first post, he rips this notebook apart. If they took the time to find this forum, then you take the time to read up on your issue. Enough said. It's been out long enough that there is bound to be plenty of info on here just as several of you have mentioned.
Secondly, the OP should take a gander at this link at MaximumPC.com: Master the Essentials: 29 Crucial PC Skills | Maximum PC
The section on Setting Up a PC may have worked to their advantage. I'm just saying. Luckily, many of us know these essentials already.
Not going to rip them any further, but come on OP, what did you expect in response to your first post, even if there's validity in there somewhere? -
when G73 came out it worked well with with most games and stock drivers.
in fact no one complains about having to update the BIOS in desktop motherboards (and it is more dangerous if you have a power outage and you haven´t a UPS ).
a lot of people are afraid to touch anything on a laptop -
Just count how much time do you spent on setting up, trying to repair, customizing and swearing about Windows
, that small BIOS and vBIOS update is nothing in comparison
-
-
OP, if everything worked out of the box, this world would be perfect.
I had to repaste my M15x the first week I got it because of high temps. I had to run a bios update to fix my touchpad issues on my M15x.
I just had to run a lag fix on my Galaxy S.
I had find the driver for my mouse on the internet because it came with the 32-bit version and not the 64 bit version.
I had to install the Zune software because my zune doesn't work without it. -

Nothing man made will ever be problem-free but it all depends on the nature of problems that do exist with the product.
I remember the worst prediction I ever made was that the iPhone would never be a mainstream phone among consumers. I said this before launch and the thinking was smartphones were just not the kind of phones that the average user would want to use because, at the time, all smartphones were slow to turn on and were not stable like "dumb" phones. I am not saying iPhones do not have issues, but if you compared it to the Symbian/WinMo phones of the time then it was a vast improvement. I accepted and expected all smartphones to behave in a negative manner.
I do not believe that someone should buy a notebook and have to access the internals (like applying thermal paste, changing a stock wifi card, etc) just to get it to work under the conditions that the machine is sold to operate under.
But that is how i look at it. -
Having a computer that you couldnt tweak and fiddle with would have been dead boring
-
Hence why I did mess with a bit of OC'ing almost right out of the box. Every device I have I make able to do things the original devs never intended/thought possible. Cell Phones, PSP, Desktops, Laptops, etc. -
Sometimes it is nice to turn your $50 router into a $500 router with dd-wrt, but it can cause some stress for CSRs to have to deal with people that screw up the device. -
The program maintains a list of keys for the BR's and Avatar playback may have corrupted the list. Welcome to DRM Hell.
-
Having to do extra setup on a 1,000k _+ machine is ridiculous.
I am SO frustrated with my new G73jh-A1!
