As my title indicates IRacing causes my G73JH to shutdown. I do not think it is temperature related as it will happen almost right away. It can happen with few seconds after the game loads or I might get a few laps... and poof, the laptop shuts off. Anyone have any ideas?
I have the latest video drivers and I did the reflash of the firmware to (012.020.000.032) for the video card earlier in the year. This is the only game I have on the machine and it would be nice if I could get it to work.
Cheers

MoreCoffee, do you see anything in event view when your computer shuts down?
Also since your temps are good, maybe it is a RAM issue ???
I would try removing 1 stick of RAM at a time (at least remove the ones that are easy to get to) and testing the game.
(I assume you have 4 X 2 GIG sticks) -
No... whatever it is happens quick enough it does not write anything to the log. I will try again later though. Thanks.

Since my last post I have tried the following...
Reloaded the operating system... clean install. Not planned, it would not start after shutting itself down while in the game.
I have tried every setting every which way in the game and in the Catalyst settings.
I tried removing each piece of memory, except the one which I can't get at.
Not sure if it means anything but there does seem to be a bit more of a tendency for the failure to occur when I spin the car out and hit the wall.
This laptop has been the biggest waste of time and money. It won't run the one game I want to play and the touchpad is horrible so I can't just bite the bullet and use it for word processing and surfing the net. I should have bought a 400 dollar laptop and built a desktop gaming computer instead. -
I just did some more updates and testing. I can consistently get it to fail by running 10 laps or so and then spin the car out and hit the wall. I guess the crash (of the car) triggers something and causes the system crash. The last time it failed the machine did not shut off, it froze with vertical lines drawn on the screen. Anyone have any idea as to what to try next to fix this?

Man that it hard to believe.. Whew maybe you could try running fumark to test the card http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
I know you said it does not over heat.
Or 3DMark11 for Windows 7 ? DirectX 11 benchmark tests -
Wait what vBIOS are you using? Sounds so much like a GSOD.
-
I am using the latest VBios (012.020.000.032).
I actually ran about 40 laps and had a few accidents and there were no failures... I might have it fixed. More testing is needed. The last settings I changed were 'Cap Frame Queue', I disabled it, and turned off 'Anisotropic filtering' at the game level.

I have been trying the game with all the graphics set to the lowest setting and I am still having problems. I am starting to think this may be a hardware issue. I even had a lockup in Windows this morning... all I had open was Google Chrome. Out of 10 failures there was only that was a freeze in the game. The screen froze but the game was still going. All of the other failures shut the machine right off. Isn't that kind of weird to always have the machine shut right down...

I tried 3 different driver versions and then got into a situation where I could not install a driver at all. I tried Driver sweeper and ccleaner, safe mode, all the usual stuff, none of it worked. The display adapter showed as standard vga and would not take any of the driver installs.
I finally used system restore and took my machine back a day and half, that worked... sort of. I was able to set the resolution to native but was still unable to open CCC. I then installed the latest drivers and that fixed it. I was actually trying to use an earlier version driver though... oh well. As far as I am concerned it is just another nail in the coffin for ATI for me. I mean what is with not being able to install a driver... The weird thing is, it did install, there was just no connection to the hardware.
This is not the first time I have run into this. Another 3 hours wasted...just to get back to where I was before. A gaming laptop that I can't play the game I want to play.
My next test is going to be to install another game and see what happens. I really miss my old NVidia desktop machine that never locked up... Would always run games well and I would start with turning absolutely everything to the highest and then work back from there to get an acceptable frame rate.
The fight goes on -
the best would be someone else who have this game to report
i didn't have any problems with games as i can remember
only with Test drive last game which needed patch and now Lord of the rings war in the north which don't have fix yet for ati cards but that is game related -
I installed Crysis SP Demo and so far it has crashed both times I opened it. The first time the machine shut down as soon as the game load bar completed. The second time is was about 30 seconds into the game. There is definitely a problem...

Can you get the full vBIOS version? 012.020.000.032 isn't the whole thing. For example, mine is 012.020.000.032. 038352
-
What program do you use to see it? Never mind I found one GPU-Z Mine is the same as yours... 012.020.000.032.038352
-
Ok I have tried to run the Crysis demo about 10 times now and never have been able to get off the plane.
I am not sure what to try next... I would still like to go back to an older driver but the last time I tried that I could not get it to install and ended up with no driver. -
I run iRacing with the latest drivers and vbios with no crashes.
-
Did it take a lot of fiddling or did it just work? I think there is something wrong with the hardware on mine. I am running a memory test now. I think there is something wrong with the video card because the shut downs are mostly in games... once in a while windows will freeze.
-
I might try and pull the second hard driver to see if that helps. Can someone let me know which one holds the operating system.
-
it just worked. Have you checked temps? Have you repasted the GPU and CPU?
