I can get a 3 month old G72 BB version from a friend for $750. Is the G73 worth the additional $$. Is the G73 really that much faster?

**** I use Windows for games only! Mainly RTS and RPG.

I really prefer ATI over nvidia but I don't know if the 5870 and 1080p are worth $900. But there's also the i7 and extra 2GB ram...

I already have a BD-combo sata drive I can install. Of course by the time I save up another $900 perhaps the G73s will actually be in stock!

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Cheers,

Depends on what you're planning to use it for - the G72 is a quite capable machine - and how much you're attached to the $900 you'd be spending on the 73.

By the fall there will be another update to the G7x line, anyway.

    Games only. Rts rpg

    company of heroes
    aoe iii
    titans quest
    c&c 3
    and many more.

Nothing but Win 7 and games.

And I'm pretty attached to the Additional $900 I've yet to accumulate.

    Cheers,

g72 should be fine with those games. i have a g71 which is essentially the same machine minus a 16x9 aspect ratio, and it has killed the games ive thrown at it, including Mass effect 2 (out performs my xbox on native res on max settings), crysis (all on hi, 1400x900 very playable, over 30fps mostly), AION, etc. those games you listed should be annihilated by the g72. If given the choice id get the g73, but im already attatched to this machine financially hahaha. but for almost a grand less, i'd say the g72.

I would buy the G72, save the extra cash for something else, maybe some new games for your mostly shiny new G72??

Let me be the contrarian. I had the Asus G51J and sold it for the G73. The difference is definitely noticeable. I could not go back to the gtx260 after having the 5870m.

The laptop is solid, looks great, runs cool, and eats even the latest games for lunch. It devours the new Battlefield at max with 40+fps. You can't ask for better than that unless you spend 2500 on an AlienWare or Sager/Clevo.

Ok, so the ATI 5870 is significantly faster. Hmmm, my son is in the Air Force and I was going to give him a deal on my G50VT with 9800gs upgraded 2.53 cpu and blu-ray and buy the G73 to replace it. I thought the G72 was an upgrade from the G50VT so why not. However, after reading your comment I looked at some benchmark sites and the 9800 and 260m appear to be very closely matched. So I'm really just getting a bigger screen for my mobile gamin, an extra 2GB, and illuminated keyboard if I buy this G72.

Perhaps I should just keep my G50VT and have my son buy the G72 (since he can no way afford the G73) and hold out for the G73 later this spring.

However, everyone else says RTS games will not see any real difference especially since the only DX10 game I play frequently is Company of Heroes and the nvidia support in the game is broken if you select DX10 it will crash after about 20-30 minutes of playing.

I really like the concept of the G73 but if my games will not see a real improvement, I have a problem spending the extra $900.

Are there any other real improvements on the G73 that would make the G72 a poor choice?
