Which model would you suggest?
I feel like the 150watty thing is not enough... what alternatives over 180w or so are there?

I am using the 180watt Targus unit. One of my dogs damaged my stock one, and it started freezing up my G73, so I upgraded to this. It doesnt get as hot as the stock one, and when I overclock it seems to handle it with ease.
-
Browsing around the forums (looking into overcloking), I thought the g73's voltage was hardwired? Even with a psu with more wattage, wouldn't the laptop only use up a certain amount of juice regardless basically making the extra watts useless i.e. wont make an impact in overclocking potential? Probably missing some important info here. If thats the case, please educate.
-
Eh, faster CPUs draw more power, more powerful GPUs draw more power. Considering both of those things have been upgraded in a G73 (although the 6xxx ATI cards in a G73 didn't last long from what I last read), I would go with its not hardwired.
-
The GPU's voltage is hardwired yes, but everytime someone raises the BCLK (and overclocking the CPU/RAM) the CPU/RAM raise their voltage and request more power.
Several with XM CPUs say the stock one still does it just fine, but for example when our boy Dallerspushes his XM to 90watts alone, it has to be going beyond the rated limit for the stock psu, with all of the other componets combined. Having said that I am pretty sure he too eventually bought the targus
lol
EDIT: ONLY our 5870m is hardwired, lol those of other manufactures are not. Nothing else on the G73 is hardwired as far as I know. -
brothers, I have a question? does anyone of you try order at powernotebooks.com? any information or opinion? I'm currently located right now here in saudi arabia and I'm planning to buy a G74sw-a1 on them.. any information would help a lot thanks.
-
powernotebooks.com have a very good reputation here, so go ahead and order
-
Yes they do. I ordered from them and i'm happy.

only the 720 drains 45 w on full load and the 5870 drains 50w, the screen can drain up to 9w alone, and now we have left wi-fi/ethernet card, motherboard, ram, ssd+hdd (both of them can suck up to 7/8w), mouse and headset for me...
The stock PS has an efficency of 80% (wich seems even too hight to be to be true, but whatever) so it can produce up to 120w
But if maths support me, with stock stuffs I am already up to 112 without knowing the others...
Call me crazy but gaming is demanding for energy, so, should I really upgrade the PS or not? -
No you are fine. You don't need a 180 watt power source, even if you are using a XM CPU.
MSI which have faster and better 5870M with Voltage unlocked only use 120 watt PSU.
You are worrying way too much about this. Completely overblown.
If your PSU explodes or dies, then I would buy the Targus 180watt, or if you just want to buy it, do it. But you definitely don't need it. -
If all the claims about power draw etc are true I guess the only reason the 150watt handles ok is because you do not need everything running flat out drawing the maximum watts all the time and the XM only really eats up all that juice if your benching or stressing I haven't noticed any throttling yet.
I think the only way I will be able to justify replacing it is to get a dog like you alloy
@OP with the 720QM I dont think you have any need to upgrade I never saw my stock JH throttle not even when I had the 720QM at 2ghz which consumed around 65watts. 150watt should be more than enough. -
-
Oh for some reason I thought you purchased the 180 unit with your XM
Anyways, JonnyFrost, what others are saying is true, it isnt completly necessary, especially with the stock CPU and what not.
Dallers; Yea hes a Doberman/German Shepard mix, was less then a year oldI love him though lol. Again, as Jonny reiterated, math backs up the fact that the stock shouldnt be able to handle much more then the stock componets. But as you pointed out, the fact the XM and other componets arent at full load/blast 24/7, is probably the primary reason why it hasnt died on you yet
With no overclocking at all, my stock psu would indeed still get pretty toasty, even with little gaming. My Targus unit on the other hand, remains cool while just idling/browsing, slighly warm when gaming (even for many hours straight), and not much warmer then that when I overclock my CPU/GPU or both.
Again its not completly necessary, but I like having it. It will help with the inevetable upgrade to a 6xxx/7xxx GPU
EDIT: Yea, what Ms Professional said -
Just punched everything on and checked the brick yeah could probably cook an egg on it mind ahh wellAnd no i didnt go for the 180watt I was waiting for Tijo to get back to me with some more information on his but by then my XM arrived and I found that I could run it upto 3.2ghz over 4 cores at full load and the heat was a problem long before throttling from lack of power was so there really is no need unless you plan to have it running above 90 watts which is silly really.
-
lol
Hmm the Targus unit should help you save money in the long run, get you out of that flat sooneryou play any RTS btw?
-
Dark Omen remains my greatest game against Baldurs Gate.I just cant get into all the Total War stuff but am or at least was a die hard Command and Conquer fan until they decided to destroy it with C&C 4. hmmm to keep this on topic and continue the discussion......I will consider buying a 180watt adaptor.....yes I will do that......
-
then thanks, will stick with mine 'till start to chop, burn, pop or whatever it does.
PS
I thought that the "upgrading to a 6xxx/7xxx program" failed before, are there good news? -
-
JohnnyFrost: Well with a sample size of two lol they worked for a while, then just suddenly died, both 6970's were from the same reseller if I remember correctly, so there was some speculation as to if they were a batch of bad 6970's (as I supposed their production was stopped for a reason). But the fact they were working at all was great news. But only a 6990 or above I think is worth the upgrade, but no one has tried. And as hulawafu is essentially saying, its not really worth it right now as our 5870's and first gen i7's should be enough for while longer
-
yes indeed, was just curious, my buddy here just need to play me along MW3 (without a doubt it will) and BF3 (ouch, it should, but even battlefield 2 at medium/high has some crepy moment where FPS goes down to 30/25... x.x' let's hope well!)

@ flyingfalcon and chastity thanks for the reply
If I were to change power supply for a g73jh...
