Hey everyone, sorry about the long title. Right now, I am trying to decide betwen the G73 and the Qosmio. LOVE the 18.4 inch screen, but love the G73 for everything else!

Anyway, I want to hear from anyone and everyone about typing the chicklet-style keyboards on any of the G73s! Specifically long term typing. I hate the chicklet keys, but want to also hear from anyone who felt like I do and got used to it, got over it, or never did.

I am a novelist and need a new gaming laptop that is also comfotable to spend hours on end writing. I know there used to be some issues with missed characters because of either a hardware issue or the touchpad, but I have heard they were resolved. So talk to me, folks! Is this keyboard comfortable for hours and hours and hours of typing?

I have N71JQ but I am using the G73 keyboard as I wanted to implement the backlight mode. :D
I personally felt quite comfortable while writing on it. I used it intesively in the last two months to write my PhD dissertation.
I found it more comfortable to use than the non-chicklet keyboard that I had on my older M50Vm notebook.

I had sometimes the issue of the cursor jumping up or down, but it was due to the touchpad. Sometimes when typing fast my hand was sweeping over the touchpad and causing the curse to jump to another line.
So usually I disable the touchpad when typing fast. In any case I don't use the touchpad that much as I prefer an external wireless mouse.

Keyboard lag........persistent issue with many users. There are a few fixes, with which users have had varying degrees of success. There is a whole thread dedicated to it.....have a look and find it out yourself.

Yeah, I saw that thread. I spoke to Justin at Xoticpc, and he told me that these issues seem to have been resolved in some of the newer units and with drivers from Asus. he also said that if I stick to the Asus drivers and not ATI (not sure what this would have to do with the keyboard though) that I should have no problem if I buy this one, which is why I didn't make that a pivotal question in this thread.

I use my laptop about 8 hours a day, 7 days a week ( work, gaming, school, etc) and never encountered the keyboard lag. I have the 209 bios.

I kinda have a problem with people who say the chiclet keyboard is no big difference to the old concave keys. I'm a violinist, so I take very good care of my hands. Google ergonomic keyboard; not one of them uses chiclet keys. You may get "used to it", but in the long run I definitely believe it's detrimental to your hands. Prolonged daily use will only make it worse.

I'm not going to comment on the G73...even without the keyboard problems, there's enough issues with it for me to stay away.

If you turn off the internal pointing device in the BIOS (aka the touchpad), there is no keyboard lag at all. And plus, I type at 100+ wpm consistently and I experience little to no lag. It's not as noticeable as my friend's Logitech wireless keyboard which can't even keep up with my typing. Like I'll be done typing and that thing will still be trying to enter my typing onto the scree lol

Area5X1, I love the touchpad on laptops and would be hard-pressed to buy a laptop that required me to turn it off in order for the damned keyboard to work! lol I mean, if that's the case, then I want a serious discount off my purchase for Asus forcing me to use an external mouse. Not saying you are wrong or that your solution isn't any good for you, but if I am buying an expensive piece of equipment like a laptop, I expect the friggen' thing to be whole, complete, and fully functional, not to have to turn off a staple-component in order to get the thing to work! Look, I understand that if you already own the unit and cannot return it, you do what you have to do. But I would be hard pressed to pay full price for a "broken" piece of equipment that needs to do an end-run around itself in order to function properly. ;)

You know, a4500435, I wonder about the ergonomic issues of this new style keyboard as well. I am so used to a regular desktop and laptop keyboard, that this is one of my major concerns, to be quite honest.

Thanks for all the posts and opinions, guys. Keep 'em coming!

I think it works just as well if you disable the pointing device in Windows through Synaptics. I don't know about you, but I disable it every time when I'm typing because my palm will touch the touchpad accidentally and my mouse pointers will do weird things lol.

I don't actually have the laptop. I am trying to decide which one I want.

What you described used to happen to me years ago until I first decreased the sensitivity of the mousepad in the laptop's settings and second LEARNED how to not keep brushing against the pad and erasing entire sections of my work lol!

In talking to Justin over at xoticpc, he told me that there was a way to disable the mousepad without disabling it, meaning that there is a setting that the computer disables it while you are typing (I think at a certain speed?) and the second you slow down or stop typing, it automatically re-engages the mousepad, then again turns it off as soon as you resume typing. This sonds like an awesome feature, to be honest, but to just completely disable it? Uh uh, no way. I would rather not buy the laptop, to be honest if that's the only choice.
