The title isn't quite right. My idle temperature fluctuates between 50C and 100C but most commonly sits at 90-100C. When I'm at 50C or so, the moment I do anything (open firefox, use skype, open a .txt, etc.) it quickly jumps up to 100C. Sometimes it will auto-shut itself down from the temperature.

This is a new occurrence. I've always had fairly low CPU temps, even while playing games, and this has just killed the laptop. I used an aircan and a half on the vents to clean it out but that only made it heat up slower. I've updated to the 213 bios and no dice.

One thing I noticed, and this could be from me checking, is that the left vent yields no air. In fact, the plastic around the vent gets incredibly hot to the touch. I've opened up the plastic above where the fan is (the back part you can pry off) and the brass looking tubing burns the skin on the left side, but there's little to no heat on the right. Mind you, the right side is churning out hot air.

I notice no increase in fan noise when it gets hot. HWiNFO32 shows my GPU fan spinning at about 3000-3333RPM, but the GPU fan speed % never goes above 30%. In fact, the GPU fan is the only fan that shows up.

Anyone have any ideas? Just a thermal paste issue? Did a fan die?

    ETA: Pic for reference.

Most certainly your CPU fan is not working and its best not to run it until its fixed as it will just max temp as soon as you try to stress it. The fact that HWINFO is not picking the fan up as connected hardware is clear as can be.

Could be that the fan has died or that a connection has come loose or even that the CPU fan cable has got caught in the blades this has been known to happen.

Initially a straight forward dissassembly is best first to see if the fan wire has come loose from the socket as that is a good possibility. As mentioned above its the fan on the left side as if your looking at the screen because the CPU/GPU are upside down on the bottom of the Mobo.

If its within warranty - RMA it.

If not: Asusparts New fan. Dissassembly - HERE

If you are in the US you can go here as well. Pretty pricey for parts but I guess there no other place yet. I'm sure as the warranties expire we will see more and more places for parts open up.

I had the exact same problem as you. I was pretty sure my fan had died as it had been playing up for the month or so I had owned it, but tried a lot of stuff anyway. Nothing worked so I returned it to the store I bought it from and they fixed it.

So yeah... dead fan, bro. Sucks.
