    Installing SSD on Asus G73-JW

    I'm interested in buying a 512 gb Crucial m4 SSD for my asus g73jw.

    I've seen posts where people have had trouble doing a fresh install of Windows 7 (ex. dvd drive does not show up and having to install via usb thumb drive). Is this normal or should I expect that, unless there is some rare problem, that I will be able to just take my old drive out, put the SSD in, and install Windows 7 like I would on any other drive? I will be using only my SSD and no secondary mechanical drive. From what I've read I shouldn't have to change any BIOS settings for this configuration, is that correct?

    Also I've seen various configuration steps to optimize Windows 7 for an SSD and most of them seem manageable but there are a couple of issues I'm not familiar with: upgrading the firmware of the SSD and installing Intel's latest RST driver. Do I install both of these while booting via usb? If so are there are any step by step guides instructing how to do so? Also can this be done subsequent to installing windows?

    had an intel x25, then upgraded to a OCZ vertex...both install were as smooth and easy as butter. No issues whatsoever and i must say that this is the first time in my life i don't format a PC twice a year to improve performance...it's been as fast as day 1 if not faster and problem free

    1) just make sure your SSD is on SATA Port 0. You can confirm this by F2 into the BIOS, and checking the SATA Configuration on 2nd tab. Otherwise your SSD should show up as any other HDD and install easily.

    2) Crucial should have firmware update software, plus instructions available as a PDF.

    3) Since you are not using RAID, Intel RST drivers are not necessary. You can use the AHCI driver from the Intel INF installer.
