    Hey guys,
Yesterday I picked up a new Asus G37 laptop. At the same time I picked up a new Intel X25 80 GIG SSD. It is my goal to reinstall the OS onto the SSD and use the factory Hard drive for storage. I have been trying a thousand different things and I cannot get it to work. I am using the factory Asus backup utility (3 dvd's) to try and load windows 7 onto the G37 but I cannot get it to work no matter what I try. Has anyone ever done what Im trying to do? Im pulling my hair out trying to figure this out and could really use some help!

    Thanks!

Why not just backup an image of the installation and transfer it that way? I use Acronis for that, but I'm sure someone will mention Clonezilla.

I did just that with Acronis but when I booted from the SSD it took me into windows and had a light blue screen that said "This is not a legitimate version of windows". It wouldnt let me do anything, no icons, start bar, nothing...

    Hello,

I am not sure if this is your issue, but if the Win 7 License Store has been corrupted the following steps might help.

    1) Open an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start sppsvc
    10) Type: slui.exe
    11) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automaticly.

    Hope this helps...

Thank you for the suggestion however I cannot open a browser window. In fact all I can do is ctrl+alt+dlt and see processes running. Im going to try and download a copy of windows 7 and use the key on the bottom of the laptop. Hopefully that works....

I should mention that Clonezilla can not restore an image from a larger partition/disk to a smaller one.

    :p

I thought that might be the case - You're moving in the right direction with your current option -
The only other suggestion I had was to utilize the "DVD" discs created during the "Recovery" software process - If you created them. If you go this direction you might need to swap the SSD and HDD locations. - putting the SSD in the location where the HDD was factory installed. Sometimes the process used in restoring an "image" can confuse the location IDs. I've only seen this when doing a restore with a USB device connected and only when the image was created with ImageX (X-Image). Which is what most manufacturers use these days for factory image creation/restoration.

Wish I could have helped more.
